Driving is absolutely a right! If I build a little car, and drive it around in my back yard, am I not within my rights?
It is ROADS that are not a right.:-)
Thank you.
You have a point, but you do sound really bitter. You must work for a really suck company. I do all of what you do, but I'm revered for it and well paid. Sorry about your luck mate!
When I first saw this article on Tom's Hardware I just about laughed my ass off. 10 hard drives in a RAID0 they propose? Okay, that is sick as fuck and everyone knows it. Must be a really slow summer.
Anyhow, here is my current party piece. Prices in Canadian loonies:
Solaris Express snv_114 [free]
Intel C2D @ 2.66GHz, 6GB DDR-II, Asus P5Q-E, plus trimmings and 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1TB internal (ZFS boot+mirror) [Only 'new' part was the mobo, $200. Total value is probably like $800]
2x LSI SAS3442E-R PCI Express HBA, these were relatively cheap. [$230 each]
2x AMCC/3Ware CBL-SFF8088IB-20M 2m (SFF-8088) to (SFF-8470) Cable [$80 each]
EnhanceBOX E8 MS External Mini SAS Enclosure with dual PS [$800]
8x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1500GB 32mb 7200rpm, in 2x RAIDZ [$140 each]
So after tax like $3500 Canadian. It is worth it though.
A *little* bit of redundancy to protect your data at the very least is a good idea. RAID1+n is supposed to be best but, my data is largely multimedia. I might be miffed to lose files but I certainly won't be out of a job.
I can upgrade RAID size by swapping out hard drives for bigger ones (must be done in block of four. What comes after 2TB drives I wonder?).
The external enclosure has 2 RAIDZ's consisting of four drives each. If a drive dies, I hot swap it out. The odds of a drive dying before I replace it with a bigger one is low.
If a controller dies, I can switch back and forth between RAID sets until I find a replacement controller. New controller type doesn't matter, as long as its mini-SAS and supported by Open Solaris!
Battery backed controller doesn't matter since ZFS is always consistent on disk.
Redundant power in the external enclosure.
If the PC dies I can just replace it (needs 2x standard PCI-e x16 slots though, which not all mobos have.)
All in all I think its a pretty sweet setup. I get 50+MBps copying files on or off of the system. Only drawback is I had to upgrade the firmware on some of my drives because of Seagate's 'bug'.
I hadn't really come to a conclusion on this event yet, but I feel your summary is spot on.
Many, many years ago, I remember how jealously script kiddies would guard their toys. That is exactly what this feels like.

Amen brother.... speed limits are a racket for the man. Also, lots of cars (my 2008 GTI for example) already have a setting where it can beep at you at a chosen speed (or two speeds, actually). I have mine set for 150kph and 160kph. First is for the lovely province of Ontar-ari-ari-fuck-everyone-over-oh and the second for Winter tires. =)
I'm not sure what your point is, but if it is what I think it is you're an idiot.
The big telecoms are in cahoots with the US intelligence community. Those "authorities" have access to your traffic. Some small town in NC won't bother to sniff your infoz.
maybe its just me, but i always say "orange orange green blue blue green brown brown", because its shorter, and i just know that the striped ones come before the solid ones, except for the middle pair. Okay maybe thats not that big a mnemonic improvement. It is the B standard though.:-)
and for the record, that boss is a retard. ive handmade a bazillion cables and fed them through the 25,000 fluke tester with "TDR" and theyre always fine (-100db is it? whatever) so long as the teeth stick into the cabley bits. and of course, custom lengths!
This is beautiful..and it makes me laugh. if I knew what points were, or how to award them, you my friend would be the recipient!
Of all the things on this list, (brochures??) the only one that matters is Manuel. WHO is Manuel, and why is he on this list???? Why would the detective want ALL the Manuels? Surely they can't all be complicit in one nerd's crimes??
I agree with you 100%, but it also makes me laugh a bit. If you only started hating Bell now, since this traffic shaping policy came about, you HAVEN'T DONE MUCH BUSINESS WITH BELL.:-) It was *YEARS* ago I realized how heinous and evil Bell was, and I also took the resolute vow that Bell would never get so much as one red cent from me personally ever again. I've known all kinds of people who worked for Bell, too: clerical, linemen, network engineers, they all laugh because they all know how evil the company is too. I think the only reason they work for Bell is because it amuses them to take money *out* of that stinking corporation rather than put money *in* to it, if that makes any sense.

They may like the taste of fishes a bit more than seeing them swim.
But, but, we likes the fishes. The fishes are so juicy, sweeeet!

I don't know what you're talking about. I base my whole life around what Top Gear teaches me. :-)
