  1. Opportunity to showcase GIMP on Adobe Creative Suite Going Subscription-Only · · Score: 4, Insightful

I think this is a great opportunity for the Open Source Community to showcase what really can be done with apps like The GIMP. There is admittedly work to be done for vector apps, but they are coming along.... Other than using Photoshop specific filters, there really isn't anything Photoshop can do that I can't do in GIMP... Why pay Adobe for their overpriced bloatware?

  2. You have got to be kidding right? on BlackBerry CEO: Tablet Market Is Dying · · Score: 1

While I disagree with those that say the PC is dead / will be dead soon, it really comes down to computing power, connectivity, ease of use, and screen real estate. Depending on your application, for most users, a smart phone is too small to do much other than check email, play Fruit Ninja, and tick people off on Facebook. Actual decent web browsing, movie watching, paper writing etc... becomes a reality with a tablet, especially when you throw a decently usable case and keyboard in the mix... (On screen keyboards do have a huge suck factor...). For serious computing tasks, graphics / video / audio editing / processing, well... tablets have a LONG way to go... Of course having said THAT, I would put my cheapie Pengpod 1000 up against my old top of the line AMD Athlon 1400 512MB ATA100 hard drives PC from the late 90s / early 2000s.... any day of the week, without any hesitation... But compared to my newer octo core 32GB SSD box.... Forget it...

  3. Never had a problem with MSI on Ask Slashdot: Linux-Friendly Motherboard Manufacturers? · · Score: 1

I have been using MSI motherboards since the late 90s with never a single problem. I am presently putting together a cluster based on MSI 970A-G46 9 AM3+ motherboards, quad core Phenom processors etc... CentOS 6.3 is perfectly happy with it... Not sure what distro you are using, but it sounds more like the Linux version you are using isn't supporting current hardware, instead of non standard hardware... I've been known to be wrong before though.

  4. Re:sco still alive? on SCO Asks Judge To Give Them the Unix Copyright · · Score: 0

Don't forget to pay your $699 SCO licensing fee, you cock-smoking teabaggers.

Now wait just a second here... What on earth does SCO, the Tea Party, and sausage suckers have to do with each other? Last time I checked the party of sausage suckers and tool polishers was the Democrats, the party of business was the republicans. The Tea Party folks, as far as I can tell are more aligned with the libertarians, maybe a little bit more socially conservative, but still pretty libertarian in their viewpoints... Smaller government, lower taxes, etc... No matter how you slice it, when it comes to American politics and government, it's all bologna anyway...

  5. Nice to see Parental Involvement rated. on Family Group Releases Annual Games Report Card · · Score: 2, Insightful

But I honestly believe Parental involvement is a KEY factor in controlling the development of a child. If I were issuing the grade it would be F -. If you believe that Violent video games have a damaging impact on your child, and then you bring a game console into your home, allow your child an allowance, and do not monitor that child's usage of said console, or time spent with his / her friends, what right do you have in being surprised when your child is impacted by something you do not approve of. It's not the government's, nor is it the media industries job to raise YOUR child. Be an adult and do your job!

  6. Re:Fair Use on Viacom Says User Infringed His Own Copyright · · Score: 1

And it's yet more fuel for the fire to have the IP laws changed. This is absolute insanity, and it's getting worse as the days go by. I can honestly say is so many different ways, the so called "Free" nations are anything but, and only give lip service to individual liberty.

  7. A decent idea destroyed by retardation. on Nissan Turns to Technology to Stop Drunk Driving · · Score: 1

Apparently Nissan did NOT do its homework... Due to ignorance I must admit, but this system will likely cause Nissan some VERY bad publicity from a group of drivers who have a particular eye disorder known as Nystagmus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nystagmus If this system tracks eye movement, it will fail perfectly sober duly licensed drivers. Oh well, not much of a surprise coming from Nissan. There are good reasons the popularity of their products has been in the toilet since the late 80s...

  8. Re:Sucks to be you, Elton on Elton John Says Internet is Destroying Music · · Score: 1

I just LOVE the excerpts from the interview! "There's too much technology available.", and "I am such a Luddite when it comes to making music. All I can do is write at the piano.". Well let's look at this... According to this wikipedia article technology is defined as... "Technology is a broad concept that deals with a species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects a species' ability to control and adapt to its environment." Music, in particular, is a "craft" that utilizes "tools" (musical instruments). So without technology of any sort, music beyond vocals would simply not exist. Even banging two rocks together rhythmically is using tools for the craft, hence, technology. So is Sir Elton going to give up his paino? I think not. Okay let's assume he is lamenting what would better be defined as digital technology. I doubt he would be willing to go back to the days of analog recording and unreliable vacuum tube amplifiers. He also completely misses the club, and garage scene. Many of us IT geeks that make our bucks at a computer keyboard, like to pick up a guitar, bass, drumsticks, microphone, or whatever floats your boat, and jam with friends after work, and on weekends. I can't even begin to tell you how many of the local bar bands in my area are filled with developers, system administrators, and engineers. Creative expression is not the exclusive domain of the recording industry insiders, and the explosion of cheap, easily available, and easy to use recording and distribution technologies through commodity hardware, software, and internet access has opened up a world of audience to musicians and artists that otherwise would never have had a chance to be seen or heard. Sure many of them are lousy. Some of them are fantastic! So if Elton thinks the internet is killing music so be it. What consequence does a washed up 1970s hack have on modern music anyway?

  9. This suprises you how? on The Real Problem With Alexa · · Score: 1

Hmmm. Marketing and metrics having a distinct diconnect from reality... For those UF readers out there (and I KNOW many Slashdotters are UFies as well), if you've ever worked with marketing people, Stef will look WAY too familiar. Something being better on technical superiority isn't going to catch the attention of the drones dazzled by shiny, flashy ads, and marketing slogans that tell us that we will be worthless in the gene pool if we don't have the flashiest car, freshest breath, and designer XYZ suits... And those of us in the knowledge professions, are not immune to a certain amount of stupidity. How many times have we performed upgrades on our own software or hardware, not because the old stuff didn't work well, or do the job we wanted, but because the new stuff is, well, new... Now if you'll excuse me, the latest release of my favorite Linux distro is out, and I need to do an upgrade whilst sipping my Frappuccino...
