  1. Re:God of Cookery on "Iron Chef": The Movie? · · Score: 1

Iron Chef was around about three years before God of Cookery, so IC could not be based on God of Cookery.

  2. Re:Is there any way to see Iron Chef if you don't. on "Iron Chef": The Movie? · · Score: 1

Nope, you can only find Iron Chef on Food Network. If you want to go the satellite dish route, Food Network is available on DirecTV and probably Dish Network as well. However, be warned that there are only 11 more episodes of Iron Chef left for FoodTV to air. They may have bought the rights to the pre-Morimoto shows and will start airing them when the reach the end of the series, but no one knows except FoodTV, and they ain't talking.

Although there have been rumors flying around the past few months that Time Warner has purchased the rights to Iron Chef (one rumor saying TW bought the rights to the past catalog of shows, another saying TW bought the rights to the show's format in order to produce an American Iron Chef), I don't think an official announcement has been made about an actual purchase.

Actually, it's not Ron Siegel who appears in the opening montage. According to ironchef.com, it is Phillip Baton, who was in Battle Bacon in 1996.

My take on the Iron Chefs' impressive winning percentages, which range from mid-60s to mid-80s depending on the chef, is two-fold. First, the Iron Chefs know the Kitchen Stadium. For the challenger, it is the first time they have cooked in that environment. Secondly, the Iron Chefs will have a better feel for what the judges like, especially some of the judges who are on the show frequently, such as Kurimoto and Kanoh.

  6. Management is stupid when it comes to layoffs on She Was Fired, But Never Told · · Score: 1

One layoff I went through, our department (R&D) was gathered in a room, names were read, and all of those whose name was read went to a second room. In that second room, we found out that the people in the first room were being laid off that day. When our entire department was laid off about a year later, I was on vacation when my manager called me at home to tell me that he was sorry to say our department had been whacked and I could come in and basically do nothing so I could get a couple more vacation days on my severance check. I told him "Nah, think I'll hang out in the pool instead. See ya Monday!" I think he took it harder than most of the people reporting to him. Of course, having a 3-month severance package didn't hurt either.

  7. Re:Perfect pitfall game? on First Ever Pitfall Perfection? · · Score: 1

I thought it was interesting as well that the article mentioned a quest for a perfect Pitfall 2 score, considering a friend of mine (using my Pitfall 2 cartridge) got a perfect score a few months after Pitfall 2 came out. I played that game for months afterwards trying to equal his perfect score, but never did.

At a previous employer, we were offered a cash bonus (one month's salary IIRC) if we release a new version of the software on-schedule. I don't remember if this was offered by senior management or something that was proposed by some of the upper-level devlopment managers. I think you would have been in a much better bargaining position if you could have made the deal before you and your team accepted the project. You might try finding out how much cash your team members would be comfortable with, then either presenting that figure to management, or trying to come up with a cash/options combination that your team can agree with. Personally, I don't think much of stock options. I've had options at two companies that didn't amount to anything.

  9. Give Procomm a try on Terminal Emulators for Windows? · · Score: 1

If you are looking for a commercial product, take a look at Procomm. If you're just doing terminal emulation, pick up version 4.6 (Connections) instead of 4.7 (same as 4.6 plus some Internet/fax tools) or 4.8. You'll save a few bucks and headaches that way. Procomm has its own script language in case you have a need to automate a lot of repetitive tasks. Originally made by Datastorm, bought out by Quarterdeck, now sold by Symantec. Disclaimer: I once worked for Datastorm/Quarterdeck, but no longer do. But I still use the software.

I wish that my local public radio station still aired the radio drama that was on when I was younger (about 15 years ago). The BBC adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, HHGTTG, Doc Savage, and so on. Good stuff.

I often went to ironchef.com to review the list of theme ingredients, to double check the name of the challenger from the previous week, and so on. The FAQ that was underway was also a very good one for viewers new to the show. I don't believe ironchef.com had much in the way of pictures (just a few) and I don't think there were any .wav files either.

Rankin Bass didn't do the Lord of the Rings, they only had rights to Return of the King (which they did do as a cartoon). I forget now who did the Lord of the Rings movie, which only covered up to the battle at Helm's Deep if memory serves.
