Thanks, i tend to agree with you myself (the poster).
This is still a demonstrator.. the idea is show that this is possible and that putting markup on your pages is useful becouse eventually there will be sigma 2, 3 (or whoever else), the S/N ratio will increase and it will be possible to reuse it with one simple HTTP call to make any SAAS software (or any software really) do cool things automatically.
You're right, name disambiguation is not covered by this release. The truth is that thanks to the semantic descriptions it will be more and more possible to do disambiguation is a smarter, more precise way e.g. using any other property you might put in any of your online presence files, e.g. homepages, work , interests etc.
it just takes work:-) a disambiguating sigma is expected by december.
Cheers.
p.s. we're not imposing any standard really.. Google and Yahoo ARE supporting RDF, RDFa and Microformats, and peopele ARE putting them on their pages. we only show how you can recombine them.
The semantic web has many issues but these are not denied
quite evidently however there is people who put a lot of work into this in finding the right balance between technology and socially sustainable models..
but go ahead just diss everybody:-) why not, i mean.
this made me laugh for some time : "Other effects, like the physiological outcome of accelerating from zero to possibly 900 miles an hour in less than a minute and exceeding the sound threshold "
ahahah:)
there will be NO accelleration on his body at all during the free fall then he will SLOWLY decelerate once entering in the atmosphere.. If they said something like this i dubt they have enough clues of physics to make him actually survive the actual threats of the jump.:)
good luck.
Living in italy is probably much more expensive and people are really unwilling to pay much for computer programmers or technical job.. as a fres CS graduate (and we do MORE school than the average america CS since we do 5 year minimum of college which quickly grows to 6-7 minimum) the average paycheck after taxes almost never exceeds $1000 / month.. make a couple of calculation on how much that is per hour and get real about what the situation is abroud Maybe after 2-3 yers you can get a net income of $1500-$2000 but that would be considered rather good (we are talking about graduated engineers here). Of course i am taking salary job here.. if you do consultancy and are the entrprenour type with your customers and stuff you can probably earn much more...
(me i ask $28 per hour programming and is considered rather expensive)
When you get the first letter.. just clean off your network or encrypt the stuff that you dont want to really delete then call the guys and say its ok... offer them a coffee while they find NOTHING ILLEGAL.. wave them goodbie and back to normal..
Of course it takes some work and effort.. but for a small startup company its probably better than the other solutions.:)
Having tested the CAVE system developed at KTH (sweden) i though there were 2 major problems there which have to be in this system too.
1) oxigen.. the thing is made with plastic.. you dont sense it immediately but air will run out quickly.. some form of ventilation is possible in the CAVE design but this design will make that more difficult.
2) translucency. remember.. there is no helmet so you're looking at real PROJECTED screens. this means that the light from 1 screen will bounce in the others as well.. result : images have very low contrast since everything is immerged in a rather bright light. (and there is no solution to this as far as i see it unless you use a laser and a florescent panel i think.
I completely agree with you this is a serious problem. Software track what you do what files you handle without telling anything to you.. I recently had an arguments with the ACDSee coders over their "feature" of storing a complete database of everything you saw with their software (complete paths and filenames, togeter with small thumbnails sometimes) and they refused to acknoledge that there might be some users that DONT WANT the whole world to knwo what they have been looking at on their computer.
The solution? the only solution that's 100% safe and simple is to keep an entire machine as a VMWARE file all inside a BESTCRYPT file!
in a SINGLE move get rid of any chanche for any forensic software to snoope into your OS details:-)))) AH.. of course you dont have to keep your DATA into the virual machien.. you can leeave your BESTCRYPT file in the HOST machine and access it via VIRTUAL NETWORK from the VMWARE machine!:)) (on which you must have installed bestcrypt as well). Email me if you want to discuss details more. I am writing some web pages about all this.
As a long time Delphi programmer and new linux user i am waiting for them to publish portability guidelines, as i have many projects that I would like to make Linux/Delphi Ready..
any1 has any suggestion about this? using pure VCL as much as possible is certainly a good start.
It took me several minutes to figure out that we were talking about a desktop theme (on their website)
beside.. who has that might time to waste creating that website? bah.. so many serious things to do on Gnome (serious user interface problems) lets think about those insetead..
Even knowing that old data becomes less and less valuable (its a fact) there is still the need for retaining it, else we would loose all our history just labeling it as "old stuff".
Same kind of problems apply to h the idea of "Virtual Cimitery" which i think its definitely interesting. Maybe it sounds funny, or futuristic to think about it now, but i personally would rather be remembered for what i have done (including source code:-) and binaries, pictures,.wav of me singing, whatever) than a picture on a piece of marble somehow.
But then how to trust a "ethernal provider" ? sure the provider , being an "active" agent (e.g. getting money for it) can refresh its data periodically so there is no "long term media" problema, but then who can guarantee he will stay in business and not burn it all someday?
Only solution to this becomes then the same solution as to long term storage, some sort of consortium of distributed storage, that everybody agrees and pays some fees on capable of distribute redundancy. One solutions for long term storage AND something that would make me have a little hope in my little virtual tomb:).
About human rights! there are certain things that are absolutly impossible to regular diplomacy, like punishing countries that are absolutly untouchable under the political/economical point of view (china, but also US afterall). I personally would put a statement in next kernel releases something like : Not legal to be used by governamental agencies of countries that do not comply to the declaration of human rights according to.. bla bla. Of course they wouldnt care. Of course we'd make a point. As a shareware programmer i am seriously thinking of doing something like that. (Against death penalty in the US) but i think it would seriously damage my sales:)
