I'll second most of this.
My girlfriend and I took a 3 month trip through China and parts of SE Asia (Laos and Thailand on this occasion..) between us we had a couple of Nikon digital SLRs, a Thinkpad T42p and a MacBook Pro.
This was almost certainly overkill, but we both enjoy our photography.
Having carried the ThinkPad around, I think I'll try an EEE pc with an external HDD next time, and save the hardcore photo editing for when the trip is over.
Or, save a tiny fraction of your electricity bill with:
# yum -y update > yum_log; shutdown -r now
(Yeah I know, redundant. Anyone who can't keep their machine busy 24/7 doesn't deserve one, right?;))

It makes no sense to you that these authors are trying to make a living? Seems perfectly sensible to me.
Still better than buying a book on Photoshop, learning the skills, and still having to drop a huge chunk of money on the software.
People tend to be missing the point here, blinded by the fact that the guy is using Linux.
He's recycling computers.
If half the stuff I've read from tech-waste doomsayer articles is true, this is definitely working towards dealing with an environmental problem.
There's no obvious ideology bullshit here, it's recycling.
I wish I had mod points.
This post was far more readable and complete than TFA, and certainly more fair and level headed than most of the comments. Fits well with my limited experience in LW, Max and Blender.
Extra credit for not even needing to use the term "open source" past the first paragraph.
It looks more like the result of an overflow error at some stage of the calculation, since 65535 is the maximum value an unsigned 16 bit integer can hold.

I wonder if there's anything to stop the enemy grabbing one of these high tech monocles off a downed soldier and playing hunt the green dots?
He's part of that internet hate machine/hackers on steroids crew. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxWgRY1I_SI
