  1. Nissan Sentra on Ars Reviews Honda Insight · · Score: 1
I have a 95 (108,000 miles) Nissan Sentra (1.6 liter inline 4) and it gets 45+ miles per gallon regularly (in town its usually between 40 and 35). Once while driving home (about 4 hours, 300+ miles) I got over 48+ (I filled it after 498 miles). And this is with the cheap gas from Arco... Tell me why I should get one of these Hondas again?

Then there's my 84 Plymouth Gran Fury (last of the great American cars) which weights (unloaded) about 5000 pounds. Anyhoo it gets on the highway about 20-25 miles per gallon - its the squarest car in the world, so I'm not getting this whole drag coefficent thingy. It also over 300,000 miles on it, and a 5.2 liter 318 2bbl mopar V8 - and its still getting better milage then most SUV's/newer sports cars. And it will do a quarter mile in less then 10 seconds.

Look I'm a mechanic, and I've never seen a gasoline engine thats 95% efficent. Maybe in a diesel engine... Why do you think modern "ICE's" still have air compression pumps - I'll tell you - its to speed up the burning of fuel in the catalytic converter that wasn't burnt in the engine. Look on any cars tailpipe too, you'll see hords of black deposits, unburnt fuel...

I'd go you 25% efficent, but thats it...

"Relative to electric motor, internal combustion engine (ICE) is highly inefficient. While good motor with a good controller can give you close to 95% efficiency, an ICE is at 17% in a good day. Worse it's peak efficiency is at certain torque and at certain speed. That is why we have gearbox system and clutch. When the car stops, you have supply it with some fuel to keep spinning (idling) which is 100% loss (0% efficient). With electric motor you can adjust your torque and speed electrically and reclaim energy in braking.

I think this is somewhat over-rated. Most people base this on the "fact" that the translation is not butchering the script. For instance in the fansub on Ponpoko (Racoon Wars of HeiSei) - where they say private parts, most people that know anything about Japanese knew they said balls.

Or take Animeigo's translation of the KOR series. Kyusuke consistantly calls Madoka by her last name - Ayukawa (thats a japanese thing - a good example of this was in Wisper of the Heart). But Animeigo subtitled it Madoka. And its funny too, because we they finally commit to falling in love he starts calling her Madoka and its translated as Madoka.

Ideally in a free trade society (a over-rated and over-used concept if you ask me) this wouldn't matter since the Japanese and English release would practically be the same (like most Pioneer releases)

My guess is that the Japanese DVD's cost more and the US ones cost less. Both are distrobuted by Bunea Vista (Disney) in both country's (really!). Sounds like product dumping to me... All its going to encourage is the pirating of the fansubbed version in the short run.

Now that I think of it - that Porcshe arguement is flawed too. I may want a porsche, but in the mean-time I found a more affordable car to drive around. Simple economic theory states that this is a substitute. Name a subsititute to a CD/Record/Tape/8-Track? So fine take away all our mp3 files - simple economic theory also states that a new black market will arise to meet the demands of the people who are sick and tired of paying 20$-40$ for a CD.

And another thing - did anyone notice during the 80's that when CD's came out they were more expensive then tapes? Its funny - count the number of moving parts in a tape - they have to cost more to manufacture then a CD. I mean I can make a CD at home for as low as .75$ - you'd think an industrial plant could make them for cheaper (I read in Popular Mechanics a while back that they cost less then .05$ per disk actually).

Simple economic theory teaches me that this is a scam.

Its like there are people that buy MS-Office (I've never seen one...) even though it costs 400$ - does that mean its selling at market equilibrium? No - in fact I don't know anyone in my circle that has a legit copy of it. And another question - why is there such a huge black market for pirated copies of MS-Office and MP3's? Because their too expensive for some people.
