So, how many people used the unix/linux version to scan for unix/linux viruses? Erm... very few.
I would imagine that anyone using an anti-virus system under unix/linux is using the unix/linux box to scan Samba shares and/or Windows networks.
That's what I do. I use Sophos anti-virus on a linux box to serve the Sophos updates to Windows boxes.
Additionally, how many people are reaslistically going to _buy_ anti-virus software for linux from Microsoft????!!! Would you?
There is one serious point here though...... if Microsoft starts bundling anti-virus software with thier operating systems, how long until Sophos/McAfee/Symantec/MessageLabs/AVG go the same way as Netscape?
Speculation is now flying around that Apple is planning to introduce a Tablet computer... and that this tablet computer is the basis of the Apple-Intel rumours.
Well, it could be true. However, I would guess that the CPU in question would be an XScale (ARM) processor. Remember, Apple used an ARM processor in the Newton.
So could Apple produce a new "Newton" based on the XScale and running a NewtonOS/MacOS hybrid OS?
It's not a quality issue (well, not initially anyway) it's a power issue.... here's a scenario:
Microsoft buys Apple. Microsoft ports Windows to PowerPC. (Actually, it's already done this: XBox360) Microsoft starts marketting XBox/Apple hardware as digital hub. Microsoft's digital hub starts to compete against PC. Microsoft ports Office apps to PowerPC. Microsoft competes AGAINST Dell! Microsoft brings out Windows 2007 for PowerPC first. Microsoft brings out Windows 2009 for PowerPC ONLY! All PC manufacturers go bust. Intel goes bust / Microsoft buys intel. "Mintel" licenses PowerPC technology - starts making it's own PowerPC. IBM goes bust / Microsoft buys IBM. Microsoft is the one and only supplyer of PC's and PC software in the world. EDS goes bust. Microsoft becomes world's only supplyer of "Solutions". Presedent Bullmer takes over at UN.
OK, so that might be a bit extreme.... but you get the idea!!
Seriously, what would happen ff the "PC" as we know it is "replaced" by the "XBox"? How could Linux survive if all PC's were closed like the XBox? How could linux survive if to port Linux to the "XBox" is a criminal offense under the DMCA?!
Apple already uses chips from Intel and AMD, and many other suppliers. This does not mean that Apple is going to make a version of MacOS X for generic x86 boxes. There was another story like this a few months ago... and the intel chip in question was the raid controller in the XServe raid boxes.
The main CPU in Apple Macs will remain PowerPC for the concievable future.
The real speculation should be whether Microsoft should/could buy Apple because the G5 CPU is similar to the XBox's CPU.
If you think Wintel is scary.... consider a future where Microsoft makes the OS _and_ the computers.
Concerning Altivec.... the PowerPC 970MP "Antares" would/will have Altivec.
I think you're confusing it with, the original Power 4 processor from which the original PowerPC 970 was developed... which did indeed lack the Altivec unit.
As far as we can tell, the new PowerMac G5's are being powered by the PowerPC 970FX... just clocked a bit higher.
My personal thoughts on future Apple chip upgrades would have Apple move to the PowerPC 970GX (bigger L2 cache / faster clock speeds) before the 970MP comes out.
There have been lots of rumours circulating about the upcoming NAB conference and Apple hardware updates... but I think most of these have probably been no more than wishful thinking by the Mac fan boys. It may be that Apple _will_ announce new hardware (Antares?!!) at NAB, but I don't think much (any?!) of the speculation has any basis in fact.
Anyway, can a rumour site be sued for publishing unsubstaniated claims from another rumour site?
Does it matter if the guesses are correct?
Anyway, if Apple announces new dual core dual cpu machines all well-and good. I'm rather happy with my Mac mini (and the fact that it's virtually silent!!:-)
Indeed you're right. Multimap has
had aerial photos for a while... For example,
this is where I live! The Aerial photos
are actually provided by Getmapping.com. The aerial photos aren't available for all locations, but certianly most of the UK is covered.
What are the relative benefits of L4 vs the Mach Microkernel? Better performance? As I understand it, MacOS X's microkernel is also based on the Mach microkernel... would it make any sense for Apple to look at L4?
Yes, HP have done good stuff.... but how much of that innovation exists today? You refer to Agilent, but that's not HP any more. Sun IPX's... I have a few (they make very good monitor stands), but a better comparison would be the Original Mac LC (pizza box). Oh, BTW, the HP 6100 must be just about the best value business PC's available.... I'm not particularly anti-HP... it's just thier slogan. I was just saying that Apple's problems (and they still have them) are not because of failures in inovation.
Apples failure with the Newton, Cube etc. haven't been because the innovation was wrong... The Newton concept lead to Palm and then to PocketPC. The Cube beat Shuttle to the SFF. Apple's failures in these cases were due mainly to a lack of conviction... (and possibly money)... and maybe coming to market too early. Have they learned thier lesson? They got the iPod spot on... they didn't invent MP3 players... but they pitched thier product at eactly the right time to capture the imagination. I'm sure the Mac mini will do well... for a start it's soo much cheaper than the other Macs... and sooo small. I'm buying one for my mother-in-law... I always laugh at HP's moto... HP invent. Do they? Naa... I hope the Mac mini will encourage people to think small.
I have the feeling that this is very bad news... unless you're a SpyWare manufacturer. Basically, if Microsoft bundles an Anti-spyware package with Windows, then after a few years there will be no third-party market for Anti-spyware apps and all the others will disappear leaving only Microsoft's product. The same is likely to happen to Anti-virus software. Don't believe me? How many commercial alternatives to Internet Explorer are there? Not many! Fortunately, we do have people who are dedicated enough to create FOSS competitors to many commercial products, so all is not lost.
Sounds like you need to be using Firefox, a free
open source web browser... suitablly
equipped with the Adblock extension. Then you wouldn't keep seeing the Microsoft adverts:-)
Not having to read the Microsoft adverts will therefore increase your productivity. Proof that Open Source software improves TCO!
I've not read the report, but from the post it would seem that the effects from wind power would be to cool the poles... and warm the central regions....
While I would generally aggree that _any_ man-made change in the environment should be considered as potentially dangerous, is this an example where we could off-set some of the otehr damage we have done?
In particular, if global warming is going to have such a disasterous affect on the poles (warming) and wind power could potenially cool the poles, then maybe wind power should be encouraged even more strongly.
Additionally, realistically, how much power could we generate using wind power? The paper reports on the affect of 10% of power from wind power, but I doubt we could reach that level within the next 25 years.
Call me a cynic, but I think this is probably yet another too-narrow focused report.... possibly playing into the pro-nuclear lobby's hands.
> Combining the rm command and lack of sleep is like combining a loaded gun and your forehead. You can only do it so often before you destroy something valuable.
Erm? Like the carpet?!
My vote goes for a 4-drive SATA RAID 0/1 solution. Adaptec do a SATA card + drive enclosure which looks quite nice.
You would think after Hutton that the BBC would be scrutinising everything that came out.
I wouldn't be surprised if in two years when the BBC charter runs out there was some serious shake-up.... probably involving removing the license fee and making the BBC a commercial entity. I'm not saying that would be a good thing... I think it's got to be on the cards though.
I aggree. SCO should grow up. Pretending to have a DDoS instead of admitting that someone in sysadmin fscked up is not grown-up behaviour... and then trying to blame the non-existant DDoS on terrorists (read Linux users)!!... well that's behaviour I wouldn't tolerate from my children. (Of course I'd expect my six and eight year olds to be able to enable SYN flood protection in thier kernel builds anyway!)
> That letter can't have been written by a lawyer: > it just makes no sense whatsoever. Even someone > who ordered his law degree by mail would know > better.
Wrong!
"it just makes no sense whatsoever"
ergo it WAS written by a lawer!
Anyway, the fact is that SCO is still waging this stupid campaign of FUD... and we'll just have to wait until SCO goes under.... it shouldn't take soo long:-)
I haven't bought a CD in some time... the last being ColdPlay's Parachutes. Why? Because I haven't heard anything I really liked. In fact I can't bear listening to Music radio.... there's precious little out there I can stand to hear, let alone go out and buy. If the record industry is worried about losing sales maybe they should look at thier target market and re-evaluate which sorts of music they fund. Alternatively, maybe they should look at the sort of music which is most pirated and simply not fund it. I think that approach could have the desired effect.
That was my _second_ resonse!
My first one was....

Yes! I have the proof that 90% of spread sheets

have errors. I have a spread sheet that proves it!
Also, 87.6% of all statistics are made up!

I thought Apple had the Patent on XOR?
Wasn't that why the FSF boycotted Apple for so long?!

Maybe the only case where I don't mind the Lawers
being the only ones to win

You are quite correct. It should be its (no apostrophy). I definately think he should correct hi's spelling!
I don't know about you, but I'm not up to swallowing a Plll! One of those VIA nano-BGA C3's maybe. Anyhow, Plll's are obsolete now.
I use a Parker 45 foutain pen. Comfortable, neat, robust and non-pretentious. Also, becuase it's a fountain pen, others don't tend to "borrow" it.
Or wrote his first James Bond story!
