Personally, Im totally cool with the idea
of interstitial ads. Potentially it could give a *lot* more room for creative expression than the 800x60 banner ad. I mean, ads on TV are sometimes the best bit, right?
Also, if you're actually designing web pages, if you take *out* the space where you used to put the banner, thats gotta open up some options right ? Having to design around a web banners totally sucks and is fucking annoying in my experience.
Of course I guess it really depends on how it is done. Has anyone out there actually seen or implemented any of these new ads that are actually cool / well done / badly done ? Any really lame ones ?
Well I work for such a company too - only I'm
one of the guys overseas to whom such things are
outsourced.
I think you are bigot to say what you are saying -
in fact I could say the same thing in reverse.
We frequently have to fix screw ups for
which American companies are responsible.
MbrIts not where a company is that determines
the quality of its workers - and our
education system is the equal or
better of the underfunded education
mess you seem to have in the states
All in all, I think this is great news ! We have had a few problems with the Blackdown VM (now repackaged as Sun jdk1.2 for Linux) under high load (more than 1024 connections etc...) Our experience is that the IBM JDK is more stable (generally speaking) and will shortly be switching to it. OTOH its worth noting that there is some inexplicable memory leak (IBM's words) when running the IBM JDK on Compaq servers. Though I guess RedHat or Compaq will find a way to solve that one soon enough;-)
United States the birthplace of free press?

The United States may have been the birthplace of a free and independent press, but...
Nneeeppp ! Wrong. The tradition of the democratic free press owes a lot more to England, France etc than the US. And in my experience, fleet street continues to be a lot richer in this 'free' and 'independent' tradition than the jingoistic, self-focused CNN-style Propaganda I saw in the US!
Hey I think you might just be onto it. > Unless you want to be on national TV, > you might want to >sell the footage of John Doe looking foolish to 'when animals attack 3' ? > or maybe.. you might do it just to incite random panic and a bit of 'starbukking' (seattle style) in the general population. Wouldn't it be cool if they could use it to spot subversives and terrorists.. of the political, pre-violent kind, and then kill them ?
All power to the blackdown team - I have been happily using their jdk for years - but the thought that Sun have rubber stamped it as another 'official' port of the JDK I regard as *great* news.
Lets not forget the many people who go to java.sun.com to find 'the' VM for their preffered OS. Ultimately, I think, this move will contribute to the strength of Linux as a platform.
So, all power to Sun as well, provided that...
- Sun properly acknowledge the great work done by BlackDown people
- Sun don't try to limit further work on Java/Linux distributions including their own.
If China adopted Linux en-masse it could only contribute to and improve our chances and our user-base.. and if not, Linux, then who do you think will get the 2 OS billion Seats ?
