  1. Re:Gov't has a LONG history of spying on us on Court to FBI - Full Public Review Of Carnivore · · Score: 1

Sure, if they suspect that my next door neighbor is a child molestor, go through the proper channels and get a search warrent they can listen in on all the phone calls made from and to that person. However, that may or may not be the case in this instance. The real worry here is not that they are using Carnivore to read the packets going into and out of your neighbors house but to tap the lines further up and just listen into the conversations of everyone on the same ISP as your neighbor. We don't allow that when the FBI wants to tap phonelines? Why should we allow it on an ISP?

Now, why should it matter right? Does it really matter if the FBI finds out that you spend 80 hours a week in alt.sex.*? No, it doesn't. But on the other hand what if they know that you belong to a trade union? What if they know that you have friends in China or a nation that isn't friendly to the states? What if they know that you regularly demonstrate against the goverment on issues of civil rights? With the state of data mining technology you may become a name on a list of known Subversives for simple activities which have no criminal origins.

Now this probably doesn't scare you, you know you and your kids are safe from criminals but who the hell is protecting you from the law enforcement agencys? There is a real reason why we, in the United States, limit police power and that is because in the matter of a criminal investigation the police have far more power than the accused individual.

  2. Other Q3a mods... on Rocket Arena For Quake 3 Arena Released · · Score: 1

Well I figure that this is the perfect oportunity to plug my favorite Quake 3 mod, Weapons Factory. I don't know how many people out there have played the original, but Weapons Factory is a modified version of capture the flag. It contains nine different classes each with different ability and is very team orientated. It is currently in beta testing at a .3 release, it is expected that the mod will reach a final release state in August. So if you get the chance, go to captured.com/weaponsfactory/quake3 and give it a try. Anyone else want to plug their favorite mod?

  3. Re:Go straight to the pope! on Web Site Invites Sinners to Confess Online · · Score: 2

I'd have to agree there, Nothing better than a quick confession to kurt@thepope.org to make me feel like I'm walking in the light again. Forget all these other silly confession sites, if you want to do it right get in contact with the pope. If I had moderator points, the parent topic of this post would be right on top. (Thats probably why I don't have points)

  4. Re:Apple's Statement on Mac OS9 Flood Attack · · Score: 1

Aparently this attack is real, at least it is mentioned at cert.org under the distributed DOS attack section. However, all this conspiracy y2k talk on Prof. Copeland's site seems overdone. CERT terms this a 'traffic amplifier' in the sense that a small amount of bandwith can create approximately 37.5 times the bandwith spent. From CERT on Dec 28th: "For the "Mac Attack" Apple is developing a patch, as described in Appendix A. This advisory will be updated when the patch is available. "

  5. Refined Hot Air on Report from Orlando: The Lost City of Epcot · · Score: 1

I took the time to read both articles and I've got to say that this newer article is a refinement of the older article not just recycling a story. It takes an informational article and uses it to illustrate the inherent tragedy of technology. I just hope he didn't get paid travel expenses to see this model which he already wrote about.

  6. Why was this Q&A ever considered? on Interview: John Vranesevich Doesn't Really Answer · · Score: 1

I am just curious why this question and answer session was ever conducted. Previous to this article, I hadn't head of JP, but after reading his comments as well most of the Slashdotter's comments it seems obvious that this guy is in the middle of a blood feud with the hacker community, his credentials are, at best, sketchy and to top it off after sorting through everything I can't find anything that this guy has done? Let's hear from somebody who is an asset to the computing world. (hint: Dennis Ritchie, Bakkus or one of the other language pioneers)
