One of the problems (or advantages on the M$ side) with Office is its lack of backward and forward compatibility. I was discussing with someone today about using, say, XML to build a meta-file which could encompass all versions of Word, and future version.
It would of course involve a bit of re-engineering, but surely not anywhere near the efforts of deCSS, LinuxPPC, connectix to name a few off the top of my head.
Anyway, this article has made me think - if the advantage of Office is its hold on the business market through format monopoly (for want of a better word) then OSS should just re-engineer all formats, keep up with the new ones, and provide a better offive suite!
The latter would be the hardest but im afraid its beyond the scope of this comment. At least thats my story any I'm stikin to it...
Thats a good question - it would be interesting to compare this with the last few years increases to determine if it is normal market increase or less/more. -
Okay, then everyone need to look in to way to encrypt their data within other forms of data, especially video and applications. If this is done well and you are selective but thorough with the data you encrypt then you will be safe. -
Here we go... in the next 10 years this field of attack will become commonplace and the effects to unwary companies will become bigger than your average anti-trust case today.
The cyber wars cometh, and in my opinion we are living in very exciting times... -
I originally saw this in an SGI magazine about 5 years ago... the Cave was a cubic room with projections on all sides and one of the environments was a world where you created life (plants, butterflies, music) through your movements.

Is there a link to verify this? If so, this should be moderated up to 5 and everyone should know. One thing I have noticed today reading slashdot is the demand for 'consolidating the power' of the slashdot community against actions like these by governments and large, unchecked corporations. It would be great to have a dicussion about this. -
Here's the crux: most internet trafic is unencrypted, so some packet sniffing and whatever anyone is saying can be read, especially within your LAN.
No-one should be able to do this. Everything sent through any network should be encrypted. The initial structure of the net did not include encryption in its standard protcols, but it does not prevent it, and there is no way anyone can prevent it (I hope) so why is it not more common?
Lack of education on how simple it is I guess...
Yep, I also hope that Russian crypto is good. But I hope they start using it. I hope every citizen in any country does.
I wasnt talking about people with pissy amounts of money, in fact I wasnt talking about that at all, but we shall deal with that first.
Anyone with 10 billion or more should keep going with the solid business investments. But with the spare 1 billion they have kicking around, it would be a viable long-term investment. Technology advancements in this area, as described in the link to the first and more visionary reply, will eventually grow to a mammoth, extremely profitable industry.
What, do you think that the human race is going to stop with the majority of us flying. We all want to go into space, feel weightlessness and see the earth as a whole, then explore further.
I apologise that I did not have time to explain while this article was front page, but I re-iterate that this needs a dedicated discussion. -
Its been said before and I'll say it again. Why arent there any private companies in the space race? Getting out there is cheaper than makin a movie, and the business models you could think up would be on another scale compared to most around now.
Take Buzz Aldrin's concept in Encounter with Tiber: promote a space flight among the elite jetset, and get investment money from them in return for reservations on the first flight. Once the first ship is built (just an upper atmosphere plane in Tiber) and supporting itself, move on to a bigger project. Repeat. Dont stop at Mars keep going.
I know it sux that this is extreme capitalism, but in this world + dimension its the fastest way we can achieve colonization of other planets, which IMO is the ultimate goal of space exploration.
We have the technology to make this secure - it doesnt take a crypto genious to fuigure it out... snail mail is used + truested for voting systems today (registration + absentee voting)...
take what u want from that... but i for one think it is crucial that we get this happening for the sake of making democracy truely democratic, and socialism truely communal. It is the only way to do away with the effort invloved in getting people to centralised voting booths all on one day, and allowing us to have more frequent referendums. Lets change this f@#*ed up system and make the c%!$ts honest. Hopefully someone else has already said this while the article was being hit most...
Addendum: letting Linux rise was definitely part of their plan to look meek (IMO). Question is: what about AOL? Have they planned their bumblings in the content field? Of other interest, Win2000 is going to be the most major upgrade since the win3.11 -> win95 update. Remember the promotion and hype even for win98? Where is it for win2000? And its here in 3 weeks or so...

... as opposed to scare tactics. Microsoft had plans to crush Linux, sorry to disentrance all the Linux/GPL loyalists out there. But it didnt happen, for example they have let two of their major partners, IBM and Intel develop interests in the Linux area. Everything they are doing at the moment is designed to make them look less of a threat - they can say to the DOJ now 'look we have Competition!' Yet beneath Ballmer's bluster, there is apparently still hope that Microsoft can find a way to settle that would strip away the "monopoly" mantle the company has been made to wear as a result of the antitrust trial Their hope is, the DOJ will reneg as much as possible, but once its over, either way, Bill will be back on track implement his deferred plan... Lets just keep this in mind, the mainstream right now is falling for his hurt puppy dog act...
The wicked thing is, that while you replace these borders and create new ones based on interest, peoples interests are always a range of things, so the borders will overlap and blur...
Your feet being 'on the ground' should be a trigger from the VR environment. To turn around, do it as if you were in Reality.
Friction should be taken in to account, so you can slide and twist your feet without taking them off the ground. Why not? Technology like this should be simple compared to, for example, direct brain-computer interfaces (I prefer the trodes idea to invasive surgery btw)
Exactly. You've got it. I was about to write this one, but I thought I would have a bit of a better scan to see if anyone else had... Start of with level walking, then stairs + terrain and feedback such as mud, gravel. Then when that is working, move the technology up to running. Eventually we may be able to combine these controls with similar hand ones, moved it off the 2d ground space, and simalte things, for example, that humans cant even do, like flying etc (thats a very simple example) Keen to see it happening!
think about it - if he did have a plan - he wouldnt be airing it first - otherwise it may be corporatized. Grade school logic says that if he doesnt give any specifics, he doesnt necessarily have no plan

Here are a couple of links to the Cave @ SGI: http://www.cio.com/archive/050197_et_content.html
