Interesting thought - I was thinking about this the other day. Has anyone discussed this before? It's gotta be worth a hell of a lot in PR for a product or a service to get a decent slashdot post. Not saying anything agains the/. crew - they're editors's - PR people use editors and journos every day. How often do you reckon PR people are making successful posts?
Again, this comes back to the 'story moderation' idea - this could weed out biased posts.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned it - but this sounds like the same sort of game the software giants play with their vapourware, etc. It's to stop the smaller players getting together and forming a standard or making something that is actually good for the consumers. Same rules apply.
Hear hear! This is a point that I never realised, but was completely obvious after it was pointed out to me a few weeks ago. Since I never new it, and its been ranked to a 5 here, hopefully a few more people have ticked...
Ads on the net should attract an equivalent cost on a site compared with its equivalent rating TV or radio show!
hmm, can't say I'm a big mac user but there are quite a few in my office. Office I wouldn't know about - but the slow rendering of pages on IE for mac is enough that alone it would be enough reason not to touch mac.
Of course, enything that doesnt run IE @ all is out of contention for me, as I kinda like a logical DOM and events system for DHTML.
I was just having a chat with a friend the other day (whose company seems to get spammed randomly the same as hotmail does) about hot this may be a form of cyber-war.
It would be great to have a discussion sometime about what level cyber war has reached at this point in time, and where people might think it is going...
I dont know if anyone has started this thread - but here's a thought: Would the differening grammatical structures of various languages make it easier or harder to search the web? Some would argue that because languages other that english are more strict gramatically that... well, blah blah blah, I don't think I know what I'm saying. We don't search in natural language yet anyway, so maybe I'm just speaking shit. But you know what I'm getting at... hopefully someone can run with this... ?
A couple of dj friends and I came up on a variation of this, but not so harsh - encode the actual tracks exactly the same length or longer, but reduce the quality of the sound or the range of frequencies beforehand. This way your track is out there, but people still have to buy the cd for the full quality. Once the record companies realise this, they will probably embrace Napster... -
Agree. DMOZ is a direct competitor to Yahoo. It is not strictly open (theres a/. cliche for ya), but it still has a lot of potential. I wouldnt like to see it frozen out of this, one of it's really big partnerships.
I cant believe this is the only person who has brought this up (at least in the title)... -
There are a couple of apps that seem to work okay on my laptop, esp. when it is idle: Another Task Manager + Rain, and there are a few more out there. Anyone know of any *nix versions? (These 2 are for windows) -
Damn foolishness, typing in the dark on a laptop keyboard and not previewing my post. Pretend like there is a couple of breaks in there, B@K = B2K, and 'reach my' = 'reach me'.
A RDF newsfeed of B@K, which is updated daily, is at: http://www.beyond2000.com/b2k.rdf, and has been submitted for a slashbox... Also trying to get an Avantgo inclusion at the moment, so we have a text version working... just have to wait and see what avantgo says first before we unleash it. Weekly mailing list is up and running too:) (by the way, another way to reach my is webmasteratbeyond2000dotcom) Enjoy! -
Just had a thought, and it relates to a topic in the topic. I contend that/. is becoming 'mainstream', not in the philsohical sense but socilogically. I read somewhere that most of the people who read this site are windows users. Can anyone post the actual weekly stats, cause its gotta be big.
Anyway, some of the bigger media sites are probably starting to notice, but probably getting as worried about/. as M$ is about Linux...
just out of interest (or comparison) ...
asp: 614,000

check out #bookz on us.undernet.org - chm versions of oreilly's are well readable with a copy of Aroy's CHM Reader for PocketPC.

I think a major point to make is from here on in, they will want to push one OS for future markets.
...
'tis a shame that this is never gonna be read by many as the story has dropped off the front page. Oh well
I should check my own site more often - and so should everyone here :)

Yep, I'd expect, unless they got really smart, that the advertising would be paid for before printing. Maybe I'm wrong, I didnt read the artice ;)

Hmm, this is the first film I can think of that has opened in Australia at exactly the same time as the US. It's been getting closer for awhile.
This is definitely good

There should be as many top-level domains as there are usenet ones (alt., comp. etc).
Sound valid to you ppl?
