.NET on its own is rather bloated, shifts drastically over time, seems determined to generate carpal tunnel syndrome, is severely limited in platform scope, and has its upgrade treadmill dial set to '11'.
Says someone who's obviously never developed in it. There have only been about 5 major releases (1.1, 2.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5) with one lesser release (3.0) across three runtimes (1.0, 2.0, 4.0). The API is stable - 2.0 code will compile with very few changes on 4.5. C#, for all its detractors, is a rather elegant language that has helped drag Java into the new millennium. Plus, the IntelliSense support in Visual Studio is unmatched (in my experience).
So you know, I've spent my entire career so far working with.NET, from v2.0 onwards.
Visual Studio Express editions are free. True, they don't offer all the fancy features of the full suite, but they're sufficient for most small-to-medium sized projects.
That works well for computer parts (often bought together) and movies/TV shows, but I'm not sure how well it would work for app stores. Still, may be worth a try (WinPhone actually does something like this already - don't know about Google Play or iOS Store).
I guess you missed the word 'equally' - check my post again. And why are you so hell bent on making me out as the bad guy when it's clear we actually think the same thing?
Wow, who shoved sand in your vagina today? Are you pissed off because I suggested that drivers actually have to care about how they drive? Or are you just a moron?
It's not so much the method (aren't all OSes pre-emptive multitaskers these days?), but the implementations thereof. Without seeing figures though, I'm not going to try and work out which is best.
You misunderstand me - parents are totally responsible for their children. It's just that someone in charge of a ton-and-a-half of mixed metals and plastics is equally responsible for the damage it can cause.
So drivers don't have to look out for other road users? Glad I don't drive anywhere near you then. Also, electric cars may have motor sounds, but only for blind pedestrians.
The place for Windows RT is to occupy the void formerly filled by Windows CE
You misunderstand the role of Windows CE, which is still under active development (latest is Embedded Compact 7, with 8 following next year). WinCE is a real-time OS made for sat-navs and embedded devices, and also forms the core of WinPhone7. WinRT is up against the iPad and Android tablets, an entirely different market.

Having to search for apps instead of having a menu is crazy.
And that's why you can pin apps to the Start Screen.
Metro is absolutely terrible for multi-tasking
To be fair, it's not really been designed for it. That's why the standard desktop still exists.
'All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landing there. Use them together. Use them in peace.'
Someone will be by later to revoke your geek card :P
Hate to break it to you, but WinCE on non-x86 is doing OK, powering all sorts of devices like sat-navs.

Good to know - mod parent Informative :)

Wonder how many more links before we're back at the Difference Engine :)
Windows is older than OS X/NeXTSTEP by four years. So I should have said 'best part of three decades'.
Never got this. What on earth makes you think that Win8's multitasking is actually any better?
Because MS has been working on it for the last two decades?
So you're blaming the parents for the actions of inattentive drivers?
I don't want a candystore on my desktop, so no win8 for me.
One app and all your problems are solved
You rely completely upon Microsoft for the windowing api and in no way can you customise the interface to do just one thing really well
Silverlight exists for WinCE, so you can write any interface you wish.

Failure to comply with Data Protection laws.
So you want me to provide a point-by-point breakdown of every fault in every OpenGL implementation? I haven't got the time nor the inclination.
Here's an idea: take 'improve' in the general sense I already told you to take it in.
By 'improve', I mean 'make better'. Y'know, the standard definition of 'improve'.
They both work in their own unique way :)
How well lit is the room?
