  1. OpenNMS is better on Nagios 3 Enterprise Network Monitoring · · Score: 2, Informative

I don't know why OpenNMS doesn't get more credit, maybe because it's a Java app, but it's a damned good one.

Get a very basic OpenNMS configuration going, point it at a range of IP addresses, and it will auto-discover most of what's out there. If you've got your SNMP agents up and running properly, it'll automatically start checking the more important OID's for you and graphing them with an RRD back end. Most of the setup can be done through the web interface instead of through vi. You don't have to restart the daemon every time you add a node.

If Nagios drives you a bit batty, check out OpenNMS.

  2. what is a "terrorist"? on YouTube Bans Terrorist Training Videos · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is deeply troubling. If a citizen of a sovereign nation takes up arms with his neighbors to drive out an occupying force, is he a terrorist? There are Americans who participate in this sort of training regularly under perfectly legal conditions, and I wonder if they will be banned from Youtube under this new policy, as well.

    Socialism is not the answer.

Telling so-called "poor" American families to start cooking meals instead of eating at McDonald's every day will save them enough money to live more responsibly. They also don't need a late model Escalade with spinners.

America has the wealthiest poor people in the world. Just because they choose to spend the wealth they have poorly does not mean it falls upon the rest of us to buy them the things they were too irresponsible to buy for themselves.

  5. I'm in the same boat. on Disillusioned With IT? · · Score: 1

I've been in for 14 years now. I think the challenge level peaked over 10 years ago. Switching from Windows to UNIX/Linux about 11 years ago was the last real high point of my career. It's all been sort of downhill from there. I enjoy working with computers and technology. I just don't enjoy all of the limitations put on my ability to solve problems by the many corporate bureaucrats trying to justify their continued employment by contriving and enforcing absurd policies that I must adhere to. IT literally took a hobby and lifestyle that I loved and turned it into a vocation that I tolerate. I'm the sole supporter of a wife and three kids. It was very sobering to investigate other career paths that I might be able to apply myself to and realize not a single one of them was going to pay as well as an even junior level IT job, at least not until I've been at it for a number of years and earned some level of seniority in the new profession. Really to do anything else that would provide for my family in the means that they are accustomed to would require going back to school for a number of years to get that piece of paper that says I can do something else competently. So I'm sort of taking a different approach now. I have been working on my creative writing. I have invested in a decent digital SLR camera and I'm learning the fundamentals of professional photography. I'm going to work towards getting published here and there, build my professional portfolio, and see if I might be able to leverage some of my professional and/or personal experience in various fields in the realm of journalism. I anticipate for awhile it'll just be side money. But perhaps at some point I'll feel justified in doing IT on the side and focusing the majority of my time on journalism.

  7. easy solution on BBC iPlayer Bandwidth Explosion Bodes Ill For ISPs · · Score: 1

Release all content to the P2P networks, without DRM, and without watermarks, in an unencumbered format. UK citizens have already bought and paid for this content. Its re-release to the Internet could be the UK's gift of goodwill to the world, and could set a standard for American and other global entertainment outlets to explore.

  8. What about the major issues? on Lessig Campaign and the Change Congress Movement · · Score: 1

It's great that he has a mission, but he does not determine the agenda of Congress single-handedly. He will be presented with myriad bills and be asked to vote one way or the other. Before anyone gets too excited, we need to learn more of the politics of Mr. Lessig. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Ron Paul contingent will not like where Mr. Lessig stands on the other issues, not one bit, but I'm ready for Mr. Lessig to surprise me by enumerating his position on the major political issues that face our nation.

  11. Hulu != Lulu on Hulu Launches With Few YouTube Killing Qualities · · Score: 1

I'm no expert on US trademark law, but it seems to me that NBC could be in some hot water for entering a market that already has among its players the established brand "Lulu" by trading one letter out and calling their competetive service "Hulu".

I know the TV networks got away with this decades ago (NBC vs. ABC) but this is getting a little silly.

    1) Actually bury your cable. Don't just lay it on the ground. And when you bury it, bury it sufficiently deep. Shotgun pellets don't penetrate the ground more than a few inches. 2) Redundant paths? Helloooo. This is supposed to be a selling point of the Internet. If this little botched cable is shutting you down, then you have bigger problems to fix with your network architecture.
