  1. Disadvantages of OLED technology on Update on the Optimus Keyboard · · Score: 5, Informative

Curious to know what OLED technology is, i went over to Wikipedia and saw there where some disadvanteges with this technology:

    Quoted from Wikipedia:

The biggest technical problem left to overcome now is lifetime. Red and green OLED elements already have life-times of well over 20,000 hours but blue OLED life-times lag significantly behind at 1,000 hours.

According to Kodak, which is developing small molecule OLED, lifetime problems are not so significant for that type of OLED, mainly as a result of doping the base material of the OLEDs, which, they claim, has led to much better device performance both electrically and optically. Universal Display for example have produced a blue OLED that has a lifetime of 10,000 hours.

There are still a number of problems to overcome though, and one of these is intrusion of water into displays which damages and destroys the organics, as well as outcoupling, which can result in the loss of much of the light in waveguided modes within the substrates.

In May 2005 Cambridge Display Technology announced a blue OLED with a lifetime of over 100,000 hours. Commercial development of the technology is also hampered by intellectual property issues since even the basics of OLED technology is heavily patented by Kodak and other firms, requiring outside research teams to acquire a license.

Catalyst is an elegant web application framework, extremely flexible yet extremely simple. It's similar to Ruby on Rails, Spring (Java) and Maypole, upon which it was originally based.

    I don't think so!

    It's a complete different world...

Normally you can see on security lists like bugtraq what kind of vulnerabilities are discovered, or patches which are available.

    Now you have different options.
    1. fix it yourself (you have the source)
    2. wait for maintainer of the program or library to release a patched version
    3. wait for your linux distro to release a patched version

What I mean to say is, in Linux or other Open Source projects, it's pretty obvious what to fix or where the problem itself exists.
Worst case scenario, you can fix it yourself.

In case of Microsoft or other closed sources, you have to wait for the main distributer to get a fix of the program or library. And even then you're not 100% sure if the problem is fixed.

  6. Three things... on Are Mac Users Smarter than PC Users? · · Score: 1

First of all think this has nothing to do with Mac's people being smarter than PC people or whatsoever. It is more an issue of the availability of Mac's in other countries. Since most Macs are sold in America, the average level of English knowledge at the Mac side is higher than at the PC camp, since it is their native language. Also more PC's are sold worldwide that means a lot of people use English as their second language.

Secondly most people know about PC's and not MAC's in fact they never heard of them. That means a lot of people from different 'classes' are using PC's, so the average intelligence of users is lower, but also more accurate for the intelligence of all average computer users worldwide.

Thirdly; we are living in a changing information age, look at simple things like SMS, we're used to compact our communication in small messages. At that time the usage of nice language gets compromised.

I hope you get my point English is not my primary language

    btw, I'm using a Mac.....

    (Excuse my English)

I see a lot of people, who have messages saying things like:
    • An update from 10.2.7 -> 10.3.0 is just maintenance, so we want a free os every (year|maintenance)
    • we want you to support our previous version of the os as good as the current one, so we can run new software without paying for them

What you're really asking is, to let a company work for you and (thousand/million?) other for free?

Let me clarify some of my thoughts:

Assume you have a company with 100 developers who just released a new version of their OS. The developers worked a whole year on this new OS and are happy they're releasing it to the wild. Because this company has a vision, you want to upgrade them to the new OS ASAP, so everybody can use this new technology. Now there are a lot of clients who say they don't want to pay for the OS, because a step from 10.2.7 -> 10.3.0 is'nt a big step (what's in a number?). It's just a maintenance release they say.

Lets assume a very simplistic view on the costs of making this product:
Every developer makes 50.000 a year, you have 100 of them so the total is 5.000.000. So without any other costs like:
    • You'll have to make manuals for the OS (write and print)
    • You'll have to manufacture and design the box where the OS comes in
    • You'll have to manufacture the CD's
    • You'll have to ship all the CD's to distribution centre's and clients
    • You'll have to update your website
    • ....
    You'll have to sell 5.000.000/129 = 38.759 CD's to get even.

    Jaguar isn't supported anymore?

Well as a lot of other companies or groups who are maintaining Operating Systems, older versions of the operating system mostly get bug- or security fixes and no new functionality, until the company stop supporting them.

Now assume the market asks for better support for Jaguar, now the company has to support Jaguar and Panther with these 100 developers. For every developer working on Jaguar and not Panther you have to pay, without any income, because Jaguar isn't for sale any more.

1997: Linux Developer Resource 1997 for about 30 guilders wich is about $12,50, it came with red hat 4.1, debian 1.2.10 and Slackware 3.2. I played with that a lot.

    The other was

1999: SuSE 6.1 which I thought was great After that I discovered Debian which I downloaded and installed, now my workstation and server are running debian, I installed it middle 1999 and never reinstalled another thing on the box I only upgraded packages and kernels. I just don't understand why everybody needs to buy new distributions try them out and a couple of weeks buy another one and try that out. My advice: use Debian; apt-get into it, and you don't need anything else anymore. Linux = Linux + packages, just because you've got another theme doesn't make it a different Linux. Yeah ok some admin tools are userfriendly, but who cares you only need to learn one admin tool and that's "vi"

OTH; the problem in the country where I live (Netherlands) you've got to pay for every second on the telephone net, which makes downloading expensive. I think I spend about $30 a month on downloading packages, but it gives me the most up-to-date machine.

BTW: I never purchased windows (no OEM or what soever), it was always pirated, my philosophy is: I don't pay for bad software. Now I don't use Windows anymore, no need for it, makes everything so much easier....
