Actually, if they somehow get some sort of shell access to the server, it'd be pretty easy to get the external IP address provided that these sites don't run in chroots where 127.0.0.1 and *.onion addresses aren't the only ones allowed... I've heard that a lot of these sites are hosted with nginx acting as a proxy layer between whatever kind of serving system they're using and tor itself, but if they can get read/write access to the .php files that most of these sites use, they can just have it curl an external IP on a server they control and get the IP that way, or install a shell and go from there, or take a number of other routes into getting the location of the servers (if nothing else, they could try adding some JS to grab all the visiting IP's for non security concious users). I'm sure the law enforcement officials of the locale where the servers are physically located would surely enjoy impounding them, thus permanently removing that batch of smut from the darknet, anyway. If you're one of the anons doing this, I highly suggest you get the external IP if possible, otherwise your efforts are not that useful...unless your usernames/passwords are a way of catching the pedo viewers.

I'm impressed with this improvement, although it will obviously vary with hardware. Linuxbios will make things better... Also, I've found that boot speed isn't really affected by hard drive speeds (I have a solidstate). It's more to do with post time, kernel size (and compile your own freaking kernel...and use the Zen kernel if you know what's good for you), whether the modules are built in, and other such factors. That said, Ubuntu doesn't beat my 12-15 sec boot time in Archlinux. That said, it is heavily customized.

  4. OpenDNS on How To Help Our Public Schools With Technology? · · Score: 0

I know that it's state sanctioned in some places and you thus have to go through the state's network, but many schools employ cumbersome Windoze based web filters. Here at my college, they use Websense (which sucks and has very inaccurate filters). At my previous highschool, they used squid. I propose they all start using OpenDNS. It'll save thousands for the licensing where Websense or other commercial products are used for content filtering, and if they feel they need finer control, they can always setup a Squidguard/Dan's Guardian box if need be. Either way, much money would be saved that could be spent on opensource equipped machines for the kiddies.

Everyone outside of people like those here in the know have the issue of associating Ubuntu with Linux, as Microsoft is trying to associate Windoze with PC's.

There are other better, faster, more customizable distros...Ubuntu is just a stepping stone between Windoze and Linux.

Next comes Archlinux or a similar distro, followed by possibly Gentoo or Slack.

  6. Re:Performance isn't its raison detre on Is Ubuntu Getting Slower? · · Score: 1

Archlinux FTW, if you understand Linux well enough. If you're above that understanding, go for Gentoo, if you're totally a Linux master, go for slack (you're nuts!). Ubuntu has always seemed like a stepping stone. I learned Linux with it, and moved on to greater distros (Arch). I'm too lazy to use gentoo or slack, but I'm sure I could if I had the many hours to invest that such action would require. Ubuntu is a great OS balance between being windows-y enough and somewhat faster than windows, which makes it good for indoctrinating new users...outside of that, once they learn more, another distro would probably suit them better if they want more speed, stability, and control.

After post, I have my Archlinux based laptop booting in 11-14sec consistently. I have added a daemon or two since this bootchart, but until then I was at 12 seconds every boot. Now it's still only 14sec. I don't see how these guys call their bootcharts fast. Their athlon xp 3400 system (closest to my 3200 x2) booting in 22 secs is supposed to be fast.

Furthermore, it lives well with qt4 installed, so you can run the QT4 apps anyway... I highly doubt that we should be predicting what Linux will look like, and instead focus on what it will take to make it better, both functionally and asthetically.

You don't have to use ndiswrapper, dude. You can just use b43. It's easy. I have a broadcom running natively in linux. See here: http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/en/users/Drivers/b43 Ubuntu's (big, slow) default kernel uses bcm43xx by default, a deprecated driver, unless you're using Hardy. I didn't mean to flame there, I'm sorry. I'm just a little...well, passionate.

No, this commment would classify you as a bit of a n00b. You still using Ubuntu? You can get broadcom cards to work using firmware from linuxwireless + the b43 kernel module. I personally prefer to just compile the Zen Kernel from git (not to be confused with Xen). It's bleeding edge and fast. http://waninkoko.info/?q=node/14 Otherwise, just build the kernel module and get the firmware. I'm graduated from Kubuntu to Arch, and now am switching from Arch to Gentoo so I can have even more control and more speed.

Do you want to know what your computer is doing, or do you want to be stuck with Vista and whatever Microsuck puts out next? The Linux community (especially Ubuntu) is glad to help new users with all the problems they have. If I were you, I'd give Kubuntu a try, as KDE does a lot of the out of the box stuff for you.

No, Windows doesn't "just work," either. You install, have to add virus scan before even hooking up to the internet, and then you have to worry constantly that M$ is spying on you, along with various governments and spywares that haven't been found yet. Yeah, that may "just work" for a year, but then it has to be re-installed. Not the case with Linux.
