There is no significant risk of being shot as a TSA traffic screener. Once, ever, does not make a trend. Far more TSA traffic screeners have been killed by drunk drivers or shot at home than shot on the job. Why doesn't anybody care about them?
The only justification for armed guards are airport security checkpoints is to expand the power of the TSA and Homeland Security. Therefore, it will happen.
"The way that the federal government bids out software is fundamentally broken.... Why can't the government draw on [the expertise of Amazon and Google] when designing a site as critical to the public as healthcare.gov, rather than farming it out to the lowest bidder?"
There's nothing wrong with farming a project out to the lowest bidder, so long as you require performance. These developers should not have been paid. Furthermore, Google and Amazon are not the only organizations capable of building a heavy-traffic web site. Hundreds of companies could have done a good job, provided the specs were not too stupid.
How much will it cost to make the change? This should be part of the "No Brainer" decision. I agree that the change is good, but rational people would expect to know the time it takes to recover the initial investment.
If the President ordered the NSA to stop spying on U.S. Citizens, Germany, France, Japan, the U.K., and Australia, would the NSA obey? I think not. They are completely out of control, above (or below) the law and the U.S. Constitution.
Both political parties have professionals that create and maintain pages on politicians down to very low levels. They frequently reverse unfavorable edits. Try it sometime.
The average H1B worker is more skilled, on average, than the average immigrant. We'll have a net loss of skilled immigrants if we eliminate the H1B program.
The purpose of the H1B program is to bring high-quality workers into the U.S. The vast majority of H1B immigrants I've known are an asset to the country and I am happy to have them here, even if it means more competition.
Maybe, but according to a web page the Internet (the finding the link is left as an exercise to the reader), Mount Rainier, Adams, and Hood are past due and will erupt any day now.
a. When was the Department of Defense put in charge of health matters? Aren't the CDC, NIH, and (of course) NSA supposed to handle that?
b. Why was the country's response to the flu classified in the first place?
Professional music stars are, in many cases, poor musicians. While some could be masters in any genre of music, others would never be good enough even for a cheap nightclub act, without all their affiliated hype and promotion. I really appreciate hearing a good quality musician. If the musician is an amateur, so much the better.
Actually, flash memory will continue to drop in price. Maybe not as much as hard drives have in the past 10 years, but it will continue to drop. I would be willing to bet $0.25 on it.
I question the 5 percent annual failure rate for hard drives. I haven't had 1 in 20 hard drives fail ever. That's at least a couple of magnitudes off the MTBF numbers.
1. Almost any swimming pool will have a some chlorides, such as sodium chloride. The ocean has even more. Salt water is a common by-product in oil and gas wells.
2. The article says "Wastewater discharged from natural-gas wells can contain chlorides, barium, strontium and aluminum", not that it does. That is hype.
3. Some idiot pulled a plug in a waste tank. It's not a corporate conspiracy. No major oil company would risk dumping wastewater like that.
The object is to learn what's happening in the ocean, not to change it. Whether something can adapt to changes is a completely different issue. Even if everything can adapt to pH changes in the ocean, it's no reason not to study whether the ocean is changing and why or why not. In addition, developing low cost, accurate remote sensors will undoubtedly have applications several other fields.

Dumb it down, just like everything else.

It would be nice if the U.S. Constitution had a clause against unreasonable search and seizure. Maybe we could add an amendment...

I happened to update php on my web server today. Did I get some additional free software out of the deal?

The lobbyists can have data caps if they want. I prefer an unlimited data plan.
Does a random number generator have free will?

I've never seen American Idol.
Don't be overly critical. Idiot politicians have not shut down the Azerbaijani government.

Looming? Most North American hurricanes this year have already happened! Is this some kind of spam?
1914?
In fact, there was an attempt by the Japanese military brass to kidnap the Emperor to prevent the surrender. The U.S. fully expected to drop 7 or so bombs before Japan surrendered. Worth the read: "The Rising Sun: The Decline and Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1936-1945."
Good points.
