  1. My Own Little Experiment. on An Experiment in Micro-Advertising · · Score: 1

After heading to E3, I decided to put up a review about the dismal performance Microsoft XBox put up. After seeing the "mainstream" gaming press try and spin the XBox off as hot shit, I figured, what better way to test this micro-ad thingy?

So, I've put my own targeted ad up. The XBox should be riding an immense wave of hype after E3, the build-up was huge, so tone of people will be searching for the information...will I get hits?

Here's my review of the XBox, in case you want to see what the real gaming public thinks of the XBox's E3 performance: XBox Review here.

The only thing that got regularly updated were the tour dates, and they're all on the East Coast for a while, so it's not like it's going to be of any help to me.

For example, the website got an overhaul after Linell released "State Songs" but it hasn't changed very much since that last time I saw it. No new merchandise, save for the State Songs T-shirt and album. No new stories from the guys, they're just too busy for all of that.

If it was a website were the band regularly interacted with the fans, and such, I'd respect their call, but I really can't say Napster's stolen all that much of TMBG's regular web audience.

And what if he was...would it bother you? And why?

Why is "difference" such a BAD thing?

What I really don't get about all these "name of group"-ist movements is that they get all pissed off when people try and acknowledge that there is a difference between their group and the rest of humanity, but they get really pissed off at the idea of just blending in with the rest of society.

Let me give you an example. I'm Chinese. I'm playing Counter-Strike, and I run into a group of people playing with their country in their name.

Now nothing to me is sadder than having to "represent" for your country in a video game. Exactly how much honor and glory do you think you're doing for you country by playing Counter-Strike? People won't remember who won in the Olympics, much less who won a piddling game of CS on a random server...I point this out and the response I get from people is:

    "Because I gotta represent 24-7!"

So I reply, "Don't you realize that that makes you no more than your nationalism?"

The response: "And what are you then, you're nothing!"

I respond: "I'm an individual, I'm #1, and my country is #2 in my life." To which they respond: "Ok, you wannabee white boy." (I've corrected their spelling, btw.)

So, what this long winded example was supposed to show is that, while those same people would be utterly pissed if I was to claim that their race had differences that seperated it from the rest of society. (not negative or positive differences, mind you, just differences. Not everything in life has a - or + attached to it...there are neutrons, and hence, there are equally neutral thoughts, ideas, and actions.)

You can't have it both ways. But you can accept both, because that's the way it is. Women are different from men. Get used to it, or you're going to have a hard time trying to conceive children. (This goes out to both sexes, btw.)

At the same time, they're just like all the men in society, because all humanity has the same basic needs and wants.

However, this doesn't mean that they're all going to attack a problem the same way. Using the example of all my "geek" friends, every single girl I know who is a gamer wants to enter the game industry in some sort of artistic position, because they have artistic ability.

By contrast, and the male gamers I know want to be coders or designers, and couldn't draw a stick man if you gave them a ruler and a compass.

If I gathered them all together and we made a game, it would be through our differences that we achieve a balance and get all parts of the job accomplished. Nobody would do less work than the other, and this is not to say that the artistic abilities that the women would be the only thing the women provided.

Why is this such a BAD thing? Why is this sexism? And furthermore, why do I have to write something this long to explain that it isn't sexism because people stopped taking things at face value? Just chill...to jump on someone for making a comment a comment like that makes you at LEAST as sexist for jumping on what you assume their intentions to be.

This is so wrong. In the first place, I would much rather have a REAL copy of the book. I know this is like, bad for trees and stuff, but reading a book on a DVD or a CD, or in HyperCard just isn't anywhere near as cool, and I'm just going to be so much more tempted to start up a game of CounterStrike instead of rereading that part on mitotic division. Even if I uninstalled everything else, falling asleep and getting drool in my keyboard, AND Keyboard Face would not be pretty.

On top of that, sharing books was a great way to hook up. You'd set up a study date, and accidentally forget one of your books in the car...then you two would have to share th same book...now that's going to cost you $500,000!

The time limitedness of this all is incredibly stupid. I don't think I need to explain why to any coder who's ever bought books in class.

Read my brother's editorial on how there will be NO live coverage of the Olympics, and basically why we hate what NBC has done to the Games.

Do you want to see the Olympics? DON'T watch NBC.

I seem to remember the Olympics running pre-NBC coverage just fine. I got round-the-clock coverage of sports I wanted to see, and learned about sports I'd never heard of. Table Tennis, Team Handball, Fencing, the High Jump...all of that isn't going to be ANYWHERE on NBC.

Instead, I can look forward to seeing a whole week and a half of GYMNASTICS! WOO F*CKING HOO! In between, we'll show the Dream Team 70 beat every other team in the world with coaches alone, and some human interest stories about those beloved Gymnasts, and if the Women's Soccer doesn't lose, you can bet there will be a day or two of them.

When I was young, corporations ran HUGE promotions with the Olympics...but I still saw live coverage of sports. All the sports. In fact, I wish McDonalds would run sponsorship they way they ran it back in '88 and '84. They gave you these little scratch cards with prizes for Bronze, Silver and Gold. If the US won a medal in that event, you won the prize scratched off. You got some really random events like Women's Field Hockey and stuff, but you wanted that Big Mac, so you watched that event.

Now the only people I see getting excited about the Olympics are women. Because here are the events you will see on NBC, F*CKING GUARANTEED:

    • Women's Indivdual Gymnastics
    • Women's Team Gymnastics
    • Men's Indivdual Gymnastics
    • Women's Team Gymnastics
    • Swimming
    • Synchronized Swimming
    • Women's Diving
    • Men's Diving
    • Women's Soccer
    • Cycling Road Race (Only because of Lance Armstrong.)
    • Track (No & Field...just track. Only the 100, 200 and 400 most likely.)

The Olympics I loved as a kid are gone. I have to derive my own enjoyment by looking at the box scores to find out who won, but now I'm not going to even be able to find out about those real time. "Pirate" the Olympics, go right f*cking ahead!

In addition, do you have any idea how ordinary people like you & me get tickets for the games? We'd would ostensibly send away money to reserve our tickets. If they're popular events, you won't get tickets, but get this, if you don't get a seat, THEY F*CKING KEEP YOUR MONEY ANYWAY!

My brother went to the games in Atlanta. He ran into people who lost upwards of $5,000 trying to get tickets for events that the sponsors had ALREADY FILLED, and they got JACK SHIT for $5,000.

This year, to make room for extra cameras, they booted another group of people from the opening cermonies...no refunds for them! What kind of f*cking scam is that?! Sell the seat 4 times over, don't give refunds, and award the seat to a sponsor. The IOOC and NBC win the gold again this year for screwing the people UP THE ASS!
