L Ron Hubbard has only 1 good book, which I do not have any more and will not buy again because of his scumbag religion Scientology, but the book is Battlefield Earth.

The Dune series by Frank Herbert is a must read..

Domain squatters bite. I would never ever ever buy a domain from a squatter, even if it was like www.com for $100, they could sit on it and rot.

The funny thing is.. its so darned easy to get around these scumbags. like the ones they have listed.. opensourceprogrammer.com just change it to open-source-programmer.com and poof.. you have your domain. They can't register everything.

A couple of things no one has mentioned...

DNS.. Always list YOURSELF as one of the contacts.. usually the billing contact so you can change your Internic information quickly to move your site. The hosting company should be listed as the technical contact, sometimes they change DNS servers etc and they need to be able to update it as well.
DNS.. Always have your DNS contact information using an email address not attached to the domain. Use an address that will not change, if possible. I know with people changing ISP's on a daily basis, it an be hard.. but someone somewhere will give you or sell you an email address cheap, so use that one and keep it forever. When making changes to your DNS info with Network Solutions, they must have an email from your registered email address. If your site is down, and you cannot send them an email from your site.. it takes forever to get it moved.

I run a hosting company myself, a small time operation, it runs totally on Linux, and I have it set up with my colo company so if something happens, I can run a script on one of my linux boxen on my cable modem and poof, its all moved over. I have a linux box at home on my cable modem that has a complete mirror of my hosting computer, and if the company grows, and I need more machines, I have plenty of backup machines to mirror those as well. The cable modem may not be as fast as the DS3 my servers are sitting on, but it will get you up and running until we can fix the problem.

You should be able to get uptime and load statistics from your hosting company, I have a page up that pulls it from a CGI script, so its always available, and you can check it any time you like.

I also have free hosting for open source sites. :)

Looked at this way... If say Linus's programming skills being improved would not have increased his employability (is that a word?), or his standing within a community, or for whatever reason he was studying programming, would he have bothered to write Linux? Why? He doesn't need the programming skills to get a job, he doesn't need the better os to work better and faster, so whats the point. May as well go for a soda, rather than bother writing a kernel. Same difference, same end result.

There are a lot of comments here.. but I'll give you my take anyway.

YOu pretty much HAVE to pay tech workers salary, for several reasons. 1. I make on salary about $75k/year, plus bonuses. You can't get a good quality tech worker for less than $30/hr, and with 12+ hour days most of us work... overtime, double overtime, tripple time... I don't care who you are.. your going bankrupt. 2. We play around with toys a lot.. be it hardware or software toys, thats part of what makes us good, but do you really want to pay me $500/day to horse around with the new Catalyst 8540 in the lab? You can't and shouldn't stop us from playing with it.. since you won't give us training, we have to train ourselves. (don't even try.. I have worked for several companies who said they would give me all the training I wanted, and hardly ever saw a class.. plus it took an act of congress to get those few classes) 2. I work 12+ hours a day.. I don't want to add an hour to that figuring out how long I worked that week, and write it all down. I documented enough stuff this week thank you. 3. If I got use to getting paid hourly, and decided to go to a convention or something which will probably only get me 8 hours, I would be massively short that week.. cutting down on my toys. With a salary, I know what I am getting no matter what.. and can plan my toy buying appropriately.

Just some views.. I know all tech workers would love to get paid hourly, but you can't afford it.

I do pretty much the same thing, I use a random character generator to kick out a few passwords, pick the hardest one for stuff that matters.. Boxes only I have root on, etc. Then I use the next hardest one for boxes someone may need root on at some point, then I use the next for personal accounts I care about, then i use the name of the week with a number or two thrown in for sites I could care less about. Once every couple of months I kick out some new passwords and change them all and voala. I have also figured out with the random garbage my passwords are, if someone needs root and I give it to them, they don't remember it the next day and have to ask again.
