There is absolutely nothing wrong with HP equipment, Its better than Dell, and most people want one or the other. With HP and Compaq technologies in their servers, they are top quality.
I actually recommend HP quite a bit as it is, and with some people actually worried about lawsuits this helps me sell more customers as well as HP sell more machines.
The fact that you think this is a worthless effort just goes to show you have no clue what is going on in the real world.
I personally am not the slightest bit worried about SCO, they will be gone in a very short time, but OS zealouts are ALWAYS complaining no big companies back OS, and when they do then they complain that its just a marketing ploy. Well, yea, I can definately see where this is a marketing ploy, but HP is not OS's enemy, and so what if doing a good thing makes the a couple bucks? I make money off of OS all the time. I could probably make more in service contracts and on site visits selling windows, but I would not be in business very long.
My main complaint is you can't please the zealots no matter what you do. My first business was a web hosting company, I gave free hosting to OS projects, hosted their web site, with their own domain name, and ftp servers, CVS, whatever. free. I sent a message to FSF saying that I offered this free service and if they wanted to they could link directly to the freebe offer page Just trying to let folks know they could use the hosting. RMS sent me a message back saying I had to change ALL use of the word Linux to GNU/Linux before he would put a link up on their site. FOR FREE HOSTING FOR OS PROJECTS. how many sites out there had to pay for hosting that could have gotten it for free if RMS wasn't so stuck on himself? Quite a few I am sure.
My point is that you guys REALLY need to shut the hell up cursing businesses for trying to help.. even if it helps them in the long run. If you just hate the idea of business or anyone in the world making any money at all then just say that. At least its honest.
The catch is, you have to be running it on HP equipment;)
Do you HONESTLY expect them to cover your butt if you build your own systems and download linux from redhat for free? THAT is why people say OS people are commies. You expect someone to give you something for nothing.
Then other posts on here staying oh its just a marketing ploy by HP. And you guys are the EXACT SAME people who a week ago were saying "why don't these companies protect us from lawsuits???"
I say bravo HP! I build my own systems for my business and for myself personally, but I do recommend servers for my customers, and I will recommend HP for linux systems from here on out.
I've met Bill Joy several times, and talked to him a lot. He is NOT a good looking guy.. that IS probably the best picture in existance of him.. and probably been to glamour shots too!
There is no reason to certify a board jockey, (someone who diagnoses.. problem with the vid card.. swap vid card) thats just stupid for someone who isn't going to make squat to have to go and get cert the company isn't going to pay for.
I was a tech when I was a kid.. (going to college) and I was good. But never got over $9.00/hr, and now that I am a network engineer trying to get a company that already invests $70,000+ in my salary to send me to training for a CCIE is impossible.. THINK about it for that little board jock. His company isn't going to pay for anything.
Now if you are on the other hand a component level tech, (and really there isn't much need in that any more with motherboards under $200) then sure I would like to see you can run an osciloscope and a soldering iron.
Just another excuse for some ripoff school agency to have another cert they can make money off of so some poor kid can pay a months salary to get the stupid cert.
To the guy who says.... but my data..... While its true the shop should not cause harm to something that isn't broke.. your data is completely your concern. I don't do backups either except for my most important data, but if my HD crashed, (and oh it has in the past... a LOT) then its my fault for not having the data backed up.
Whomever designed a network of that size without redundancy in the first place is just stupid beyond compare.
If they say.. Oh.. it was the finance people who said we could not have the money for redundancy.. Then you jump your prices in your quote in the first place and tell them its single homed and build it redundant anyway.
Spanning tree has no forgiveness in it at all, probably someone put in a bad route or something and everything exploded.
I have designed many networks, and ALL of them have at least SOME level of redundancy.. most are complete hardware mirrors, but some are just extra paths or just extra cards in the switches to move cables to in case of x y or z problem.
This is most likely someone entered bad data into one single switch somewhere and it took Cisco forever to find it.. and of course guilty party didn't want to admit to doing it because he knows its his job.
Most congressmen do not even read or have anyone on their staff read email messages because of a couple of reasons.
1. They get way too much of it. 2. There is NO WAY to know if the email came from a person in their district. Its so easy to go to a place like this site and just enter in each and every member of congress' address.. and send it to everyone. A rep from one state does not and should not give a pooey what some freak from some other state with a web browser and too much time on his hands wants him to vote for.
Spend the $.37 and the little bit of toner and print the letter and mail it. It WILL get read by someone.. your email PROBABLY will not.
Answer these questions, and you will have your answer.
Do you pay for a maint contract? or do you maintain your own systems? maint contracts will cost more on home grown systems.
do you have folks with extra time on their hands? If not, and you will need to hire to get the job done, you have to take that money into account.
Do you have a corp license from micro$loth? Read the w2k EULA. changing motherboards probably will cost you another license fee.
You can actually build them cheaper than $600, especially if you are reusing a lot of stuff. I buy ABIT's for under $250, and those are the best mb's going, bar none!
So lets get this straight. First you say you screwed up and are willing to pay your penance, but then you say that spam is completely legal and you should have every right to send it.
Please let me know what service you work for so I can NEVER use it.
You ran an open relay, perhaps if you spend some time trying to get taken off the lists, then perhaps you will be more careful next time.
Or, perhaps your employer will figure out that if they simply hire an administrator who knows what he is doing, they won't have these problems.
I just love this crap of spammers blaming everyone else.
Lots of times my switches/routers get fixed magically when I go back and delete out the bad config info that I put in by mistake.:) The redundant sup would have picked up the same bad config info from the primary and voila.. has the same problem. Then, when you go back in and "take out some mods that were made" everything comes back up. Probably not a prob with your redundant SP, bad configs can kill your switch in a heartbeat.
Dvorak was a pretty smart guy back in 81-84, but he is currently completely lost. He's the guy who you expect to hear "why do we need these here new fangled pentium boxes? My old 8086 is workin fine!" He is a media head, not a techy anymore, and he is bitter because he can't keep up. I assume because he is so out of it with technology, he figures no one can use the stuff.
Yea, I really want to pay someone dues to give me the same lame contract everyone else gets, when I can negotiate myself much more, (always have, always will) I was in a union once, they took a crapload of my money to get me less money than I got at my next job, which I negotiated for myself, and was non union.
Unions are even more corrupt than corporations. I will never again work for a union. They tell you what you can make, when you can do what, what you can do at work, and even how to vote. I was pressured many times by the union I was in to vote screaming liberal.
Just ignore them, if they talk to your present employer, you can sue them, although IHAFL (I hate all freaking lawyers) their legal department will be aware of that, so they should say nothing. Probably just trying to shut you up.
If they talk to you... what are they going to do? Tell you you are a bad person? BFD (Big Freaking Deal) If all you said was the reasons you left there is not much they can do about it.
Someone in Norway wanna trade email addresses?
on
Norway Bans Spam
·
· Score: 1
I'll give you one on my server in the US for one on your server in Norway.:)
Would be nice to have one address that doesn't get spam.
Oh, so just because someone else is stupid enough to live in a place that sucks, WE have to shut up while screaming liberals take away our freedoms saying "well, they have it much worse in bla bla third world land."
Everyone who in any way uses sensitive information has to have a laptop, encription is installed and must be used, and you MUST take your laptop home with you EVERY night. We have folks who come around while your away from your computer, and if they can get into it, they take it and you have to explain why encription was turned off to the big boss man, if its left at night, its gone in the AM, and you get to do the big boss man thing again.
Needless to say we don't have much worry about theft.:)
Your statement is not completely true. I frequently use napsters hotlist function if a person has several songs I like, then I hotlist them, which lets me view all their songs. From this, I download stuff I have not heard of/listened to. Some of which I like. BTW, my CD purchases have drastically increased since I started using napster.
It doesn't really matter what pairs are in use, the important thing is that pins 1 2 3 and 6 are used for ethernet. Technically the telco standard for color coding is blue orange green brown slate. On a cross over cable 1 is crossed with 3, 2 is crossed with 6. When I make a cable, its always white/blue=1 blue=2 white orange=3 orange=6. None of the rest matter.
My question is as follows. What is the reason you now think you are too good for your fans? I remember when Metallica first started, I heard of them from a copy of a copy of a tape someone gave me when I was about 17, Now, If I had never heard that "bootleg" tape, I would not currently have every album you have made up through load. (which BTW I am giving you about another week to come to your senses and drop this retarded suit, at which time I am burning each and every metallica CD I have, and going to call the radio station and tell them I am turning the station for 1 hour if they play a metallica song) So now I have all of your CD's, but my machine is not fast enough to record your stuff directly, so I DL it from napster. I already own all the songs, so nothing illegal is happening. but you still think your such big shit you can shut that method down? Why? So I can buy all your music yet again on MP3? Won't happen.
Disregarding the illegal actions of the company of charging peoples credit card without telling them, or after telling them they will not be charged, for services they did not sign up for.
Perhaps they should come up with 2 pricing schemes, one with internet service for 2 years or whatever at $22/mo, charged to the credit card, and the machine for $99, and another pricing point for the unit alone, hackable, with no service. I think the people around here have been suggesting $300 or so, I'd pay that much for a hackable one, with an ethernet port so I can connect it to my cable modem. In a heartbeat.
I really think they should refund with interest the money charged to people who were told they would not be charged, someone is going to hit them with fraud.
Can someone please PLEASE moderate these retards who at every single post say "hemos can't spell" "cmdrtaco can't talk" give it a freaing rest. Lets face it.. If your a grammer/spelling Nazi, you don't do geek stuff, you do english class with the rest of the nerds (Yes, that makes you a nerd, and uncool.. unlike us geeks who are uber cool) How about you make your own copy of slashdot, the code is free, and repost everything they do.. with spelling corrections! See how many people come read your shit!!!!!!!
Just to keep this on topic.... Funny hemos! Not as funny as last years joke, but funny!

John was a smart guy back in 81-83 ish, then his ego got the best of him and he has been lost in that exact time frame since.
I get tired of hearing him say "Oh why do we need these new fangled 286s for anyhow?
I don't watch his spin show just because he has no mind left.
He is a tv star now, not a computer guy, so he is not going to like anything which could possibly cut into his paycheck.
