Can I run OS X software through X? Does XDarwin support gnome? Is the kernel source available, or do I have to wait for apple to support my hardware?
You can run XDarwin (X server) through Aqua. You can run it rooted or rootless. So you can, if you wish, have X apps and Mac OS X apps running side by side on the desktop. Yes you can run Gnome through it (I dont, but it does work). The kernel (the important part) is exactly as it came from BSD - and thus under the BSD license. It is open, and I have seen non-apple drivers for many devices.
Most importantly: Does it have an automated package installer like apt-get?
Yes, in fact there is...its called fink (find it on sourceforge) and uses the same commands you know and love (dselect, apt-get, etc.)
My personal Linux machines were Debian - so I appreciate your want for the simple-yet-still-raw feel that it has. You can get that to some degree.
I Love being able to run MS Word, Powerpoint and multiple vim, ssh etc sessions on the same screen. Or just hitting an icon and bumping out of the Mac feel altogether and run rooted in Blackbox.
Ximian Evolution is SO much better than Outlook.
Hell I still use pine cause its better than outlook:)
I agree with your assesment. While laser weapon technology is great (ill take one handheld phaser, and one phaser rifle please!) I think this particular technology should remain as more of a "proof of concept" rather than a useful weapon in the feild. It would be more useful once the research catches up and is able to deliver bursts of fire whenever called upon.
This, however, is another good step - just above the old Star Wars plan Regan had. Its not really a useful technology...yet...
When was the last time any HARDWARE manufacturer even said anything about modification? Well - look at your warrentee. It seems the worst that can happen to you if you mod your hardware is that they wont service it if it breaks.
Nowhere does it say "you will go to jail if you break the seal over this screw". It usually says "Breaking the seal over this screw will void your warrentee".
If you want your warrentee service, dont touch the hardware. If you dont care - then there isnt anything stopping you from modding.
Now: There is such thing as an illegal modifiaction to hardware. You buy a car you can do almost anything you want to it. Add better intakes, add a turbocharger, etc. It is illegal, however, in most places to replace your muffler with a "Fart Pipe" so that it makes as much noise as possible. Doing that will get you fined.
We know its illegal (in most places) to add fart pipes to your car because its a law, and its on the books.
So where do we draw the line? Is there going to be a law written up that says "Adding a chip to a playstation is illegal?"
As far as I know (I am not checking statistics here) The P4 is nearly equal to the G4s in standard benchmarks. (P4 is a bit faster, but in reality it doesnt much matter)
Im not quite sure the P4 is the best processor to test with, since its just a PIII with less processing units and a doubled pipeline.
The PIII is a better processor to bench against. (How many servers do you see selling with P4s? None as far as I know). The PIII in fact is measurably faster than the G4.
Anyhoo - Its splitting hairs in my opinion. Both processors do their job. I just prefer the AIM machines to Wintel machines.
I think the switch commercials are targeting people who are considering buying a new computer. In other words "Gee, my computer is kinda slow...Lets buy a new one".
I dont think Apple will be very sucessful in making people throw away a perfectly good Windoze box in favor of theirs. They just want to try to turn the people looking for new machines. To them the ads stating "gee, i can do all the same things, but its easier" are tempting. Sure its a bit more expensive, but if you are willing to pay for the quality hardware, you get a quality machine. Look at a PC of similar parts quality and the price difference is nearly gone. The disparity comes when you compare Apple's cheapest machine (iMac) to E-Machines latest $500 toy. Compare the iMac to what you get in a decently configured Dell (and I mean quality hard drive, quality RAM, etc) and the price difference is very small.
The point of the Apple server is that most people want a server to run out of the box. You, as a geek, probably love to tinker. Thus buying one of these things is kinda pointless.
What happens when you run a large company and want a set of new servers? You look to Dell, Gateway, Apple. Then decide who can give you the better product. Apple is just trying to say "Here, we can sell you a nice UNIX server, with a nice interface on it so anyone can admin it". They seem to be reasonably sucessful doing it as well.
Up until OS X was released I used Linux (on my G3 and on various intel boxes) nearly exclusivly. OS X (after its quirks were mostly worked out), for me, is acting just like a Unix system. I control most things from its terminal. I run XDarwin and use blackbox as my primary control when I am writing code. I use the standard Aqua interface when I'm just being a bum and surfing. Its a web server, file server and just about any other kind of server I can get running.
So now my time is spent working with both OS X/BSD and Linux and im loving every minute of it. Im forced to use Win 2K at work - but hells if I am ever gonna buy a windows box of my own.
OK - the point: (I knew I was getting there) OS X is a great way to get people to migrate into a Unix world. The Apple servers are selling well, and its adding a great deal of Unix exposure...
My parents are on vacation in france. They have web based email accounts. One of the hotels they stayed at happened to have internet access. So they sent me (and my grandparents) and email stating that they were having a good time. They did this a few times, until they went on to the next hotel that had no internet access.
My grandmother, who just learned how to use email, has decided that something HORRIBLE has happened to them because they havent sent an email report in 3 days. She is now convinced they are dead, or something stupid.
If I dont have my cell phone with me one day (or god forbid I TURN IT OFF when I go to a movie), I am assumed to be dead by my family because they cant contact me.
I would seriously consider dropping my cell phone plan - except it DOES have its uses. I think it would do the world a bit of good to drop the "Information Revolution" back a few notches. Dropping all the way back to pre-information age technology wouldnt be good. But I think people are taking some of this stuff too far.

I dont know about how other people code, but when I write in C - I always think about what library needs to be there. Its instinct for me to add appropriate.h files. Its like driving a car...you don't put the car into first gear without first depressing the clutch...Likewise I never use a library call without first making sure its.h file is there.
But, yes, you are correct...the cast is unnecessary. I leave it there cause 1) it looks cool (it IS just a.sig afterall), and 2) the compiler I always used gave me a warning about not casting.
I dont believe of a word of what the "Shrub" says.
Im not sure many do these days. The parent to my post was reffering to Regan, who many people did trust (I have no idea why, but I digress).
In Regan's case it was a similar issue. People trusted him to tell them things, and when he said bogus stuff, nobody knew any better and simply believed him.
Its simply because people trust statistics from any sort of authority figure.
If the PRESIDENT says something, people assume he MUST be right.
If says "our industry is growing FAST FAST FAST", people will believe it. This appears to be how bubbles form (Enron, Worlcom, etc). People will believe statistics if they seem somewhat reasonable and come from what appears to be a reputable source.
Besides, this doubling every 100 days figure seemed like a great concept to latch onto (gee, humanity is becoming more connected...thats great!)
So I guess the answer IMO, is that people ARE just getting caught up in excitement.
Worldcom creates the bubble that says net growth doubles every hundred days. Then everyone says "oh crap, we better double our bandwidth every hunder days". All those other companies dont use as much, and *poof* they die.
Why did it take so long for this to catch up with worldcom? Oh, maybe its their shady accounting...
This is exactly why I wont work at MS. I walked out of an MS interview a few months ago because of this attitude.
On my resume, I had listed (with URLs to more info/downloads) games I had written (in C/C++), Webpages I had built, database systems I had created using MySQL, XML/XSLT and Java.
If that wasnt enough proof I could write code, then I dont know what is. Yet the interviewer asked me to write a "hello world" program on paper, in Java. This insulted me.
The next thing he asked was a question on some kind of obscure java.net library that had to do with extracting an IP address as a dotted decimal string from random class. I told him "I dont know, but the answer is on java.sun.com and I could have it within 60 seconds". He said that was the wrong answer, he doesnt want people who need to "think" about looking up stuff, he wanted me to actually be able to vomit out obscure java APIs from memory. Sorry - my brain is occupied with useful things.
He was wearing ripped jeans and a faded, ratty Windows 95 T-Shirt. Beat up sneakers and no socks. Never asked ME any questions - he constantly talked to my resume, as if it was going to answer..and chewed his fingertips as I answered.
About 20 minutes in (I was scheduled for 45 minutes), I announced that there were probably better people suited to this job (code monkey?) and walked out. I now work at Lockheed Martin as a software engineer... NOT a code monkey like I would have been at MS....
This asteroid will hit Buenos Aries, and our new fascist government will blame it on evil, giant bugs from another planet (even though these bugs couldnt possibly have the technology to do something like this...you will see when we get there to blow them all up)...
This was considered. But appearantly has been ruled out. The reasoning is that for some sort of dark matter to be able to slow down the probes, then we should see a similar effect on the planets - yet we do not.
Tell that to your employer. If your contract is anything like most peoples, they own what you put your sweat in.
However your employer pays you for your work. Essentially they BUY what you produce from you. Thats how capitalism works, I guess. You do something. Someone gives you something valuable (money) in exchange for what you did. Both parties are happy.
Worse than shock resistance is the fact that moving parts require alot of power. Entierly solid state devices dont need much power due to the fact that the solid state devices are rather efficient. Motors and servos and anything else that moves are dreadfully inefficient.
Moving parts = large bulky batteries etc, meaning added weight and less use per charge/per battery.
You could always flood any areas you suspect of possible misuse with electromagnetic interferance...
But I think then everyone would carry interferance generating devices to prevent others from attempting to "telepathically" communicate "behind their back"...or hack into their "cell-tooth" and read their thoughts...

They already hold this patent....
Personally, I love the spell checker that suggests a correction to your search.
However (IMO) any NLP done on the search should be computed and offered as a suggestion.

"Search using these terms? 'purchase tropical fish'"
