A warning like this will never work. Invariably when asked not to use flash phorography, some wiseass sets off his camera. This would normally fall under the category of natural selection, but in this case other, potentially smart, people would be killed. Maybe they would consider a xenon flash bulb a weapon and arrest anyone carrying a camera for being a terrorist?

Is something like an 8.5x11 sheet of this stuff on a sturdy clip board - with some memory. This way I can take class notes and such, and have it simply record my pen strokes. Dont bother trying to interpret what I write. Then when I fill a page - hit a store button that saves what I did and clears off the page for me.

I guess I want to see something like those "note pads" on star trek TNG....

Why does it matter that they only offer one pointing device? Most PC manufacturers do the same. If you dont like manufacturer X's trackpad, then you are out of luck as well, unless you go with manufacturer Y's product. This is how it is in a regular competitive market. If you dont like some aspect about a product, buy a different one that you do like.

Not everyone will like the form factor of the powerbook or the iBook, and thus they shouldnt buy one. The track pad on the powerbook and iBook are of a high quality - they a re the most accurate trackpad devices I have ever played with. However, I still despise trackpads and for the most part, use a mouse with my Pismo PB.

What would happen in a situation like mine where the only MP3s on my computer are the ones I have ripped from my own CDs to transfer to my rio? Would the RIAA claim they have the right to crack my security measures because they know there are MP3s on the computer, legal or not?

I would be one of those. I own a mac and run Linux (Debian/unstable) on it almost exclusivly. Why? I like the hardware better. I think the PPC processor is superior to the x86 archetecture. Sure, its just a preference. I also found that buying my current mac (a powerbook 2000) was cheaper than buying the comperably-spec'ed PC laptop. Everytime I did the math, the powerbook came out on top by about $500. And this was considering the fact that I would be running the same operating system on either machine. I keep MacOS around on the hard drive just in case I feel like playing with it - but I dont really use it.

  10. A few words on Does Open Source Separate Business From Technology? · · Score: 1
I generally find open source to be "project" oriented while commercial softwware is definaltly business oriented. In many open source projects there generally only needs to be one place to keep the code, and one or two people that do some code traffiking. With commercial software you have a beuracracy that creates the code.

I see companies trying to pull open source projects, and have them work, such as darwin. This is a good thing because these companies are seeing openb source as a possible way to get real work done as opposed to watching their closed source projects slag along into oblivion.

I feel that an open source project, properly run, can create great software. This kind of thing works well in the business model where a large company heads the project (in a way) like Apple with darwin or Netscape with Mozilla. Its a sort of hybrid business model and, IMO, works rather well.

I have a final to go to, and will follow up later.

The speed bump in the G4 is pretty significant. The chip already blows away the pentium based competition at its current speed (being fair: in floating point intensive apps). Its the PC world which is touting this "MHz" thing as a true benchmark. PCs have nice big flashy numbers (750-800-1000) so they decide to flaunt that. Unfortunatly for Apple/Motoroloa, that means that people sit there drooling like idiots and decide that their PIII 750 will always be faster than some "lame" G4 450. (It certainly cant balance your checkbook, or do your taxes any faster, but thats a different story) Also, the G4 isnt ready for portable use, its still too much of a power hog (though, oddly enough, not as bad as a PIII) I believe that the G4e is supposed to have better power handling and will be used in powerbooks later this year (dont hold me to that, im not exactly sure)
