People trying to work while on an airplane need to learn how to relax and let it go. It's one really great excuse for not working and finally getting some extra sleep and people want to waste that? I was on one flight and once the plane took off the pair in front of me said "ok, let's get started on our presentation". What the hell, finish the presentation before you get on the plane so that it doesn't look like a crappy presentation you cobbled together on a plane.

People just don't know how to relax. We need more slack!

I never understood this about sharing between computers. If the file isn't on my work computer then I don't work on it unless I have my work computer. When I go home, I am home and not at work, I will not do my job on my home computer. When I'm at work, I don't do my home stuff on my work computer either. When I am commuting I am not working either. If I travel for work I take my work computer with me. And my phone and tablet have nothing whatsoever to do with work anyway beyond basic phone calls and simple email reading.

Doing your job on your own personal time just seems idiotic unless you're a slave or you're getting paid extra for it. Workaholics need to learn to stop working now and then.

And I have seen little reason to share files between my phone, tablet, and computers except for backup purposes. The whole point of OneDrive and similar stuff escapes me.

There are way too many people these days that just don't know much about socialism, capitalism, or anything else. They split the world into two, and anything that isn't socialist must be capitalist, and anything that isn't capitalist must therefore be socialist. It's way too simplistic, but there you go, people like simple things and ignorance is bliss.

For instance, I've tried explaining that the fascists were neither socialist nor capitalist but people push back hard on this idea because if violates their world view. You can see that on the far right there's very often a knee jerk reaction to label anything they don't like as "socialist", just like on the far left there's a knee jerk reaction to label anything they don't like as "fascist". Simple people don't like complicated thinking.

Also applies to some capitalist theories as well, such as the common myth that an economy can grow forever. The whole point of capitalism is to get other people's money while giving up as little of yours as possible. Sharing the wealth is often called socialism by binary thinkers, whereas acquiring and hording the wealth is a natural tendency in capitalism. (of course, there are more than just those two economic camps but too many people these days can't count beyond 2)

  8. It does require planning if you look at the text of the bill.

  9. Maybe some of the stress comes from knowing you have to make your money now because in a few years it will dry up. Like sports stars.

  10. There is so low quality on youtube, and I hadn't realized twitch made that money since it's inherently unplanned and ad-hoc and so low quality too. It really diminishes most of any value you get. Very little editing, very little variance from last week's uploaded video, and half the video is spent begging for viewers to subscribe.

  11. $500,000 per month sounds like a good remedy for stress. Not a problem there, those making that much money should either retire or suck it up.

Now for those not making much money, just enough to get by without getting a second job, I can understand the stress. Or even those where this is a secondary job. There does seem to be pressure to release new videos on a regular and predictable schedule, and there are profuse apologies after returning from vacation.

  12. These aren't the same days as when my grandfather bought a tractor in the 40s and kept it going for 30 years. A relative did some contracting with John Deere and said that those tractor cabs were nicer than any car he had ridden in. Turn on the A/C, push the "go" button, and it plows the field while you take a nap.

  13. All roads lead to Rome, Indiana.

  14. I've been thinking about where to retire, and while I grew up in central California and the prices are good, it scares me a bit to go back there. Way way too hot, not enough water (and the droughts WILL return, poor infrastructure. Also the bowl of the valley traps in poor quality air from LA and then the heat cooks it into smog, which is not a great thing for health when getting old.

  15. That's the hard part, the free market will always insist on cutting corners because their ultimate goal is to maximize profits.

  16. And they're replaced by new trees. What sequesters carbon are forests, not merely individual trees. That means don't clear cut entire forests just to build homes for the post-WWII boom or to create new farm lands.

  17. We have the greatest unicorns here in America. Tremendous unicorns whose ratings are going up.

  18. We've managed several bills over time that have gradually increased the amount of renewable energy that should be used. And magically the utilities did comply, and technology was created and adopted to help achieve this. And at each step there were people who said it was impossible - and it was impossible on the day the bill was signed but not impossible over time. The key thing here is to start getting technology going. A major thing that is missing is energy storage.

Because the plan of the status quo which is "worry about it next year" is guaranteed not to solve any problems.

  19. We're building micro-caves now for the poor who can't afford full sized caves.

  20. The whole problem here is that most of the country thinks that global worming is an ideological thing. It's a real thing, ideology should have no bearing on it.

I am a bit surprised that traditional health insurance in the US doesn't bother with health prevention much and will often refuse to cover many procedures or treatments that can improve long term health. It's like their model is to fix things when the break rather than preventing the breakage. And the high deductibles that most plans have seems to just be a blatant way to not pay out any money for anything minor. On the other hand, I'm in Kaiser Permanente which takes a proactive stance on prevention while also being affordable.

High speed internet is being treated like a luxury, the same way telephones used to be treated as a luxury, or electricity, etc.

I'm in the heart of Silicon Valley and I only have two choices that are more then 1.5mbps DSL, and that's Xfinity and AT&T. Meaning a cable company is your supplier, and you overpay for what you get and in return get bad service.

My mother lives in a rural town, not that tiny, maybe 20K population. She doesn't have cable so her only choice is 1mbps. It's great compared to her previous dialup or the spotty wifi connection to her neighbors (who have cable), but it's not broadband.

Even in the big city, the cost of high speed internet (because you're a slave to cable monopolies) is enough to keep most poor people.
