  1. Leaves out History on The Mystery of Capital · · Score: 1

The American Historian Paul Kennedy estimates in one of his books that at some point , not too long after Colonialism began taking roots, China's share of the world trade was around 25% and India's 19%. British Colonialism disrupted the native Agrarian economies and turned what were once formerly prosperous societies into poverty-ridden countries. Comparing ancient civilisations with with 300-400 year old countries is absurd. The British created a class of people in whatever countries they colonised - be it India, Kenya, Sri Lanka , who were educated in English and more importantly anti-local and western in their attitudes. This was an evil stroke of genius on the British and continues bear fruit even today. But there is a slow realisation in some sections of even these westernised intelligentsia that any system that does not take into account local temperaments, history and culture will ultimately not work. The next stroke of evil genius was making Democracy, Human Rights by the post ww2 Anglo-American neo-colonial powers , as some kind of standard. You can always impose moral standards after you'are done with the colonial looting and systematic eradication of local populations and cultures. That little island in Western Europe has produced more criminals and committed more atrocities than any Nazi regime that ever existed. Because of the triumph of the anglo-american alliance in ww2 , their crimes have gone unpunished . But let it not be forgotten that no one will forget the evil deeds of those bastards and wheel of history will turn a full circle ...

I completely agree. The only reason I keep nautilus on my machine is because , this "Spastic Medusa Indexer" wakes me up early in the morning , when it is setup to start munching my disk; I drive 55 miles to my workplace and need to wake up early - so, it is kind'a useful ;-)The only response I ever got from an Eazel guy was to hack the cron job. At least they don't disagree that it is a CPU/Mem hog.

Miguel, Thanks for all the great work. I am a bit concerned that Evolution looks headed for an unstable release. It looks extremely promising and I am using 0.8 to handle my mail. But, it's wayyyy too unstable. It might not be a bad idea to set the counter back and label the release after 0.9 as 0.1.

Jon, I did'nt mean pandering to women. I meant pandering to western audiences by making it very exotic, an extra dash of exaggerated eastern flavour. In other words, pandering to the Western conception of ancient China. The reason I am asking this is that , I have noticed Indian authors writing in English in recent years making attempts to make their novels very exotic - this apparently sells very well abroad and have even landed a couple of Booker prizes : -). Of course , you can just dismiss it as just another view. The other point about activism that I was trying to make was about distortions being introduced into stories by the writer's personal ideology. I noticed this with one of my favourite Indian comics - Amar Chitra katha - I remember reading an interview with one of the editor/author who admitted to her efforts to make women appear strong in these stories.

  7. What do the Chinese think ? on Reviews: "O Brother" And Others · · Score: 1

After reading Katz's first review of Couching Tiger, I went and saw the movie - I was not dissapointed. It is extremely well choreographed and there is a certain dignity about the whole movie, especially when the hero ( it's more about heroines ) accepts his death. But I am most interested in what the Chinese themselves think about the movie ? Does it pander overly to a western audience and the strong potrayal of women - Is it activism gone crazy or was it true of ancient China ? I might go see the movie again. It's really, really worth it.

Gnome is based on the GTK+ toolkit - It is not based on Xt like Motif is; so, you can't mix Motif and GTK/Gnome widgets in your applications. If you are concerned about bandwith, you can always use the old FVWM style environment.

This is true to an extent; the book is written in a very dry style; It would have been better if the book had included more examples of increasing complexity. There is a real need for meatier tomes like the 'Motif Programming Manual (O'Reilly)' by Dan Heller and Paula Ferguson. But Havoc's book is published under a Open Content License - so, folks like Mr.SUCKS can always modify it and publish their own.

  11. Balck Sheep on Giving Back · · Score: 2

There are a bunch of big corporate houses that never acknowledge their use of GNU software and Linux (or GNU/Linux ) - US defence department contractors and sub-contractors. I work for a fairly large defence department sub-contractor - this outfit has saved piles of money by using GNU tools, esp 'gcc'. More than a year back they built a Video surveillance system (both visible and IR ) based on RH 5.0 - it was stabilised and stripped down to run on 8MB of Flash. The system is rock solid and runs in extremely Mission critical environments. A quick look at the "Thank Gnus" page - http://www.gnu.org/thankgnus/thankgnus.html shows none of these contractors, who make moolah by the millions. I am ashamed to be working for them - anyway I will be moving on soon.
