Call me crazy, but I don't excuse the things the Chinese government does just because they convinced their population that they should.
The thing is, the Chinese population has been convinced long before current government is established. I'd say the first time censorship was tried and accepted by Chinese people is around the time of Ancient Roman Republic.
If thinking that basic human rights are universal makes me an imperialistic American dog, then I am a proud imperialistic American dog.
I think you are an American *idealist*. If people are worried about food and shelter, they are not going to worry too much about free speech. This must be hard to imagine when you were born in prosperity.
Shadowbane allowed players to create their own city, build shops, hire guards and etc.
It never really became a big hit, and slowly died out.
The reason I see behind that is in such games there is no place for casual players who make up majority of the population. In a competing game world, if you slack, you will be ruled out. Many times I log back in the game after a break and got completely lost - the guild I belonged to disbanded, city I bound to got destroyed etc.

2. Crime.
3. Panicking people who don't have the sense to just wait it out.
1 - Never seen a traffic cop directing traffic?
Ever seen a cop replacing every single traffic light in a city? that would empty every police station in the country...
Ever seen volunteer replacing every MAIN traffic light in a city?
All witches...I mean IE-supporters, should be burnt!

And if you read a little history, by destroying the governing body of another country, and establish a new one with weaker support, the new government will become dependent on you, because by itself it cannot survive its opposition force.
The trick is to support the new government while keeping its opposition strong, in order to maintain this relationship.

I agree, comparing Tibet and Iraq is like comparing Latin city states conquered by the Romans and cities burned by the Goths in medieval times.
In a serious note, in totalitarian China, more people wanted to keep Tibet as part of it; in liberty US, were there more people wanted to burn Iraq?

So how powerful is the public opinion in the west?
Are there more people supporting Iraqi war than against? even within the US?
Apparently while China is governed by elite families and friends, the US is governed by elite corporations.
I do think that citizens of some smaller European countries have real saying about their government, but that hasn't been proven to work in larger countries.
correction: China is using blacklist, not whitelist.
Now if there are only 30 sites on the net, that won't make a difference, but luckily there are a few more than 30.
You seem to have a point, until you start contradicting yourself with follower culture and doing new stuff.
In that sense, all scientists are followers, only politicians are leaders --- oh wait, you do have a point!
The system you described sounds very good, except one minor pitfall -- how do you make sure kids know what is good for them?
There was a good reason to enforce 12 years of general education, and by which time kids became adult and finds their ways in life, and decide what they want to do. If they made a mistake of going to work in call centers, they may realize that later and still go to college. But if a kid was out of school at the age of 12, and realized later how important education is, it is a lot harder choice to spend 10~12 years in school when they are 30.
Chinese schools have been doing this for decades, and developed many methods to boost student scores in exams without actually boosting their knowledge or intelligence. No big deal though, all this does it to generate some Ph. D who can't find jobs.
Doesn't matter in-house or outsource, a formal quality control method has to be in place to ensure no such accidents happen.
That employee of Verus can be working for the hospital's in-house IT department too.
You may not realize this, Communit Party is not China, China has existed a little longer than the party (something like more or less than 10k years).
Only if the chinese really decide to invade.
Only if Taiwan really decide not part of China.

I knew I could kill off half of the Europeans like Hitler did! Well, I guess I kind of missed my chance due to not being born at that time.
