There is much more to the iMac than an all-in-one case design.
Everyone seems to be missing this point... It's not like Apple was the first one to do an all-in-one (or like the iMac was their first AIO, look at all the classic Macs and the G3 AIO)!
The iMac represented a computer that was designed from the start to be easy to use for anyone. Literally anyone could setup an iMac in about 5 minutes flat.
It also represented an attempt to make the computer a more fashionable accesory in the home, not just a beige box with wires everywhere...
I use Java servlets combined with Apache JServ on Apache connecting to mySQL. It's great!! It's really fast. Hopefully the Linux HotSpot stuff will be done soon, along with Java1.2 support in JServ...
I see people posting URL's for Spotless stuff, but that is not the same thing...
Does anyone know when we can download this stuff? The press release does not specify and the kJava page on Javasoft's Web site does not even mention the PalmOS port...
LinuxPPC R5 is one of my main OSs (the other is MacOS X Server) on my G3. I use it every day and it schools my Intel box at work in terms of speed (PII, same clock speed).
LinuxPPC, Inc. are a bit shady of a company but I don't understand why the PPC is given such a hard time when it comes to Linux... No one says, Linux on Alpha? Stupid idea! - or - Linux on Sparc? Why waste our time!!
Is it because Apple is associated w/ the PowerPC that it is "uncool"?
Did you consider that if the people charged with maintaing these machines don't know anything about how they work, they may not be in tip-top shape? A school is a bad environment for a computer from the computer's side of things andyway...
Why does everyone think that 3Com is putting in their own network??
3Com's solution is based on two parts.
One is the BellSouth Mobitex network that the BlackBerry also uses. This transmits the data to and from the other part which is merely a proxy server that compresses and encrypts the packets going to and from the Palm VII device.
3COM IS NOT BUILDING THEIR OWN NETWORK.
Also, while the PalmVII is being sold initially in New York only, it works everywhere you can get the network coverage (www.palm.net for maps).
Doesn't Buffy have a disclaimer before the show starts anyway... Something about being appropriate only for older viewers... I know the totally lame Dawson's Creek does.
I live in Santa Barbara, CA and have ADSL service from a local ISP called Silicon Beach. My CLEC is GTE. The install was totally painless and the service has been running well for months at very competitive prices!! Can't say enough good things about ADSL!!
Some high schools are very well endowed... My old high school now is run with a Gigabit Ethernet backbone (for students, not just the administration) and has 5 RealVideo servers for live streaming into the classrooms... Neato!

Palm.Net highly compresses and strips out the crap so you don't have as huge of messages...
Why do they need to be streamed off of OS X? The source code to the streaming server is available and I understand that a port to FreeBSD has already been completed. I'm sure a Linux port couldn't be that far behind!
Something like 30% of iMacs sold are to new computer users.
15-20% are to Wintel converts.
I'd say half of their sales means competition.
They're called "shareholders" and they scream for blood when you don't sue if this sort of thing happens...
Hmmmm... Red Hat will soon have shareholders. Wonder what they will make Bob Young do...

The first comment I agree with!!
This is a gross violation of Apple's IP. Apple HAS to sue or their shareholders (me included) would go insane...
If you can look at the E_Power and really say that there is no iMac rip-off in there, you are smoking some seriously strong crack.
Apple spent millions of dollars developing this idea and now this knock off company re-wraps it? Totally unacceptable.
I'll drink to this... Too bad you can't deploy WebObjects on Linux yet... Solaris, NT, MacOS X, HP-UX only... Still, a great platform!!
Just gotta get rid of the Objctive-C zealots...

>>>MS main revenue line is not going to be web servers, it is Operating Systems, hence this the value add is the reason they offer it for free.
I thought they made most of their money off of Office...

Did you read the press release? It's part of the Personal Java implementation. Not a large, slow JavaVM.
I'm sure the CEO of EBay is asking the CIO the same question right now...
Wouldn't be surprised to see some heads rolling after this one...

That Mobitex network also runs the Palm VII
If you don't like it, don't watch it.

Kernel.org offers http downloads.
I didn't have to agree to any terms of service from my ISP.
Definately find service that gives you a static IP address.
It sounds like you have an external and internal network (192.168.x.x internal) that may not be configured correctly... Can't blame that on DSL!

It DEFINATELY does TCP/IP. All Palm devices have had this built in since the Palm Pro...

I see it on their FTP server but it's totally bogged down... Anyone mirroring it??
