ya know... there's an interesting discussion over at cad-fu about how all software is going to the ASP model. Now, you merge that with some transmeta type action, and boom, you have the software that runs through the internet everywhere. or do you? well, its the thought that counts.
Oscarfish wrote in about a fantastic "Wall Street Journal article at ZDNet reporting that Napster executives are in meetings with record label executives."
Actually emusic, and mp3.com were in talks for a while as well. I believe mp3.com came up with some kind of deal.
sure beats the hell out of Direct3d!! I like the state-based machine style of OpenGL. Anybody know what ever happened to the SGI/Microsoft Farenheit project that was supposed to merge the 2?
I'm not out in Kansas, but in the West Coast you have way too many people who talk like they know what the hell they're talking about! You can hear actor here in LA using buzzwords like modem, net, kilobyte, and megabyte. Then, you find them at the local PC store trying to sell you stuff. *grin*
maybe linux will give Sun a run for the money after all. I'm not a big fan of Solaris on x86 and netras cost a pretty penny. Linux can be just as stable in my opinion. Any operating system can be insecure and unstable, it just takes the right admin to make sure as many of the bases as can be covered, are!
face it... you never had any privacy anyways. Drug stores, magazines, and eveybody else knows what you by either by your credit card number, ssi, name, etc. You check out of Luckys using their little key ring tag, they might as well scan that tag off your forehead. Keep it simple, have one tag for eveything.;)
What trite crap... you mean that net released stuff on Atom Films isn't eligible?! It's actually reasonable for Independents to get noticed through the web. It costs big bucks to have a digital production laid off to 35mm Academy at a post house!
funny... they had all this learning retention drugs called nootropics. Unlike Protien Design Labs which humanizes drugs, it looks like these guys are de-humanizing them.
Whats up with all this privacy is that now sites like anonymizer and zero knowledge are starting to become the privacy information miners!!! Instead of a company grabbing your info, they grab it and charge the company if they want it! Kinda low down and sneaky!!
I'm wondering if anyone has seen LinuxArtist.org. There are actually plenty on quality ray tracers and 3D environments all ready available for Linux. A|W is just adding Maya to the list. This should have been done a long time ago, in my opinion.
Disclaimer: The opinions expressed are not necessarily those of Alias|wavefront. Alias|wavefront and Maya are registered trademarks of Alias|wavefront, a wholly owned subsidiary of SGI®.
There has always been paranoia at new technologies. So, we have the ability to do something new. People were scared sh*tless at the concept of computers and robots. Hell, Asimov had a robot running the world. This didn't please too many people. Nevertheless, we've seen 1998 pass, and soon 2001 will pass. I still don't see no sinister talking robots.
In my opinion, all this has to do with a lack of appreciation for the status quo. People do NOT want to change. No matter how quick, or new, the technology, people will always be slow and cautious to adopt it. That being said, we'll all probably be dead before the 'Gattaca' scenario could become a real possibility... most probably from CRT tube radiation.;)
Interestingly, the Los Angeles Times had an article sort of on this, on March 5th. In the business section, James Flanigan discussed the need to "build up infrastructure, in telecommunications, pollution control, medicine, air transportation and many other fields." According the article, India has a labor force of 314 million, and 300,000 high-tech workers. The middle-class is about 250 million with an income from $10-$25,000/yr. He suggests foreign business should be interested in India.
However, I find, social ramification of NGOs and MNCs of more interest in these LDCs. (i.e. What is the effect of Coca-Cola, IBM, and Honda in India?)
maybe true... but, I've seen alot of students plunged into using CDE or IRIX and walking away without every having to touch a shell. Linux can easily have any one of the ultra-GUI managers with KDE, and all is good for many desktop users. I mean, have you ever seen a user of Windoz NOT develop a theory about why it won't boot after two days?!

Well... this may not be too far off the mark with lobbyist of various countries vying for their rockets and launching facilities. Cellular phones, pagers, etc. are definately raising the competition in this space. I'm just suprised Amazon hasn't patented the idea of a large cone shaped object using highly combustible fuel designed to carry payloads into space, yet.

Dunno... Saw on cad-fu people talking about the video games using Java on cell phones. I'm not convinced that these have real usability, though?!

But seriously, this doesn't get us any closer to extraterrestrial life then Roswell...
