  3. Re:Being Rooted Sucks on The Honeypot Project · · Score: 1

Yah - I know exactly what you mean. I was rooted through my anonymous FTP server - RedHat 6.2 default. It was interesting and absolutely terrifying to see what they were doing. Set my eth0 to "promiscuous" mode and were logging everything - including emails I sent my wife. Luckily I found out a few days later. They have been back, but the firewall was there to greet them :-) Everything looked like it had been run from a script... pretty elaborate. Stuff was hidden inside /usr/lib/kerneld ... a bogus directory I think. As far as I can tell they helped themselves to some MP3s and left. I know what you mean about feeling dumb, but its not like you shouldn't be able to run an anon FTP... I remember wuftp was broken in RedHat 5.? I guess I should have learnt this daemon sucks. Now it looks like OpenBSD even has an exploit in their ftp server.

  6. Why do things need to be practical to be posted? on Java On 8-bit Platforms · · Score: 2

Lately it seems like people complain about how impractical certain achievements posted on Slashdot are. I was under the impression that in the eyes of fellow geeks, hacks stand on their own merit - being judged on how clever they are and nothing else. When did all this concern about how useful or practical an accomplishment is factor into the equation about whether it deserves recognition? (ex. a Slashdot article). Java on 8 bit machines is an extremely cool hack - inter-geek approval where it is merrited - if they want to try and make a living off this hack, that's their business (and their investors' I suppose).

  18. Why does apple hate contextual menus? on MacOS X Beta Sneak Preview · · Score: 1
I remember the first time I saw contextual menus (OS/2)... I said to myself WOW - finally something truly beneficial to the original GUI concept. MS of course jumped on it with win95 etc. etc.

Apple - who has actually BRAGGED about its simpleton single button mouse since almost day one of the Mac - continues to poo-poo the concept. It chose to slap half-assed contextual menu support into its late OS releases through system extensions, but the mouse remains single button.

OK - now they come out with their Rolls-Royce OS and it looks like they're dropping contextual menus all together (according to what I just read in this article)!

I can't see there being any new Macs in my life. I'm serious - its that important IMHO.

I admit I haven't sampled OSX yet, but how can you possibly ignore what has become a VERY basic component of modern GUIs? How can you work around its absence?
