    uh... what? They never migrated to Quake 2, they used the same heavily modified Quake 1 up until release, and called it GoldSrc. Then they heavily modified THAT into Source, and it basically no longer has Quake code in it.

    First of all, it's spelled Capitalism.

    Secondly, while Blizzard does charge for their software sales, their real cash cow is the monthly server fees that they charge. They would still make their subscription revenue whether the game itself were open-source or not.

    If you want proof, look no further than the multitude of free WoW servers scattered across the internet. Then compare populations with legit WoW servers.

    Third: Open Source/Free Software != communism.

    You're assuming that the GPL requires the source code to be made public. It doesn't. All it requires is that you offer the source code to anyone you distribute the software to.

    So in your example, the only way your competitors could use the code you develop is if you give it to them.

    I just recently bought a new quad-core box w/ 4GB of RAM, high end video, the works, pre-installed with Vista.

    So you bought a Vendor PC. With all of the assorted pre-installed performance-hampering junk that always comes with that.

    Seriously, at this point, is there anybody on Earth who cares about Hellgate: London?

    Why does Slashdot keep posting stories about this? It's very simple: Flagship had a good concept. They built up all sorts of hype around it. Then they released a half-finished game that looked and played like crap, so people ignored it and they went out of business.

    And pretty soon the Hellgate servers will go down, and the five people who play it will have to deal.

    Can we please just let this whole embarrassment die?
