  1. Re:not surprising on A Brief Sony Password Analysis · · Score: 1

I'm not leaving my wallet laying around but it's not absolute security. It might still be stolen and that's a PITA. A password written down will be lost if they're not in a logical place well organised and that mean that if someone figure out where it is, they have all of them. Or you can store the pwd in different places and forget half of them. Sure you can find a logical place where to store each pwd but either your too predictable or you won't think of the same place each time.

Or you have a decent IQ, are sure your friend won't betray you (but then, who will? ), and are very well organized in which case you're not Average Joe. Or you have the ability to remember 38 pwd > 20 letters... In which case you might not have lots of friends...

That might be needed. Maybe they can take the hard drive away, read it, erase it, reinstalling it fresh with a self made installation CD and put it back. You can't be paranoid enough...

The knowledge of what the PLC does/is supposed to do isn't impossible to figure out, if you don't limit yourself to software hacking. It's isn't easy, but humans being humans, you can always social engineer your way to knowledge if you're good enough... In theory at least.

But then again, why would someone put a USB port on such a system? (At the very least, you can always erase the USB drivers before going prod.)
And is it even useful to have a full OS? Do you even need an OS? Well, obviously it would be easier to use... and maybe cheaper to develop. But I do hope they'll compile a minimum OS for this one.

Not really since the "robber barons" consider it robbery when it happen to them.

They think taking bits you don't own is thief and they do it to others? I certainly think they deserve to be considered as thieves.

Then again, there is the intent of the owner of the code.
BSD : He want to give it away? Well ok, you can't steal what is given.
GPL : They want to share as long as you share alike? If you don't play by the rules, don't whine if you get sued.
Closed sources inc : They don't want to share at all? Don't try. And if you do, get sued too.

That is all. GPL isn't an Evil Viral Licence. Well it may be viral but hey, at least you choose to get it. It's important. The LGPL is here too so you can use LGPL libraries with whatever licence you choose to use for your own code. It seems fair to me. They want to see what you're doing with their code, you can consider it part of the price.
With that clear, I think the GPL is a good compromise between total liberty to take credit for someone else and the "Do your own code, punk!" philosophy. So if you ask me, I'll advocate the GPL rather than the BSD licence. And you'll certainly advocate the BSD one. Or you'll just flame me for being a communism, and demonstrate which one of us is a religious zealot.
