Both pre-ignition and detonation will result in the same symptoms. Both will result in the peak combustion occuring at a less than ideal time during the piston stroke.
Both situations are also commonly called knock.
To use a half assed source the wikipedia article on engine knocking describes it better than I do.

As an aside personally I'd describe it more as filling a tin can with a couple of metal BB's and shaking it, rather than a ping sound.
Technically speaking the air/fuel charge does not detonate, it deflagrates. In a gasoline engine detonation is a bad thing, and is marked by ping or knock.
Unless of course the US reprocesses the spent fuel and burns it again like Europe or Japan. The end result is a fuel which is far less dangerous and has a much shorter storage requirement.
This isn't about bogey men or bogey women and while there is certainly a valid concern regarding the spent nuclear fuel, it certainly doesn't have to be as bad as it currently is.
Isn't that the entire point behind the slippery slope argument? These measures are put into place on the premise of preventing the big evil thing from happening. If the plan is to utilize the technology even for petty crimes 'they' should be accountable to that from the beginning.
"DNA is a proven law-enforcement tool." Yes, and removing hands prevents stealing. It doesn't mean it is a good idea. Somehow I suspect removing hands is a more effective deterant to theives than DNA samples ever could be to terrorists.
I'm not sure I like the implementation entirely, but there should definitely be checks and balances to stop the run away shotgun blast method of lawsuits that the RIAA and friends are using.
Isn't that a problem which could be solved much easier by simply making it so that the seller had to leave feedback about the buyer first, or by making feedback invisible to the other party until both parties have left their feedback?
That would protect buyers from retaliatory feedback without removing the ability to leave negative feedback where it is due.
Why is it that if someone leaves their home unlocked I can't just walk in and grab their goods and run without being prosecuted?
At what point in a civilized free society have we decided that a person should not be responsible for their actions just because someone hasn't specifically safe guarded against that action?
I don't know where you are from, but around here you don't get printed unless you're being charged with a crime. I'd say that that qualifies.
I also didn't know being in jail was something to be proud of.
The biggest problem I see with these kinds of "give it up or else" laws is how do you account for the situations when someone genuinely doesn't know the information you are seeking? Should someones ignorance be a jailable offense?
Why does Harry Hunt and Peck or Sally Secretary care about open source? To say that anyone outside of Slashdot's demographic knows about, let alone cares about, open source is delusional.
Well then, I for one welcome our new holodeck overlords who will undoubtedly determine a way to hijack the planet and hold it for ransom unless we can get them to new virtform station...
Generally seen as safer or actually safer?
Given the effect reducing lighting or at least using more efficient full cutoff lighting would have on energy usage there is more at stake here than mere aesthetics.
You would be the first. I was previously a supervisor for a technical support call center for Comcast and while we dealt with abuse cases I couldn't tell you what the caps are.

Mitch Hedberg was awesome.
I guess I must be a jaded Canadian because when I hear "NDP" the last thing I think of is th peoples best interests.
My stick figures have breasts.

And here this whole time I was hoping my boy would discover women...

Browser sync already does this. I've often felt the implementation was a bit cumbersome though. It's good to see competition in the field.

It probably will never negatively effect you. However, some people object to being treated like a criminal for no apparent reason.

If you want that kind of control you can use the alternate install CD to install a command line system and build the rest from there.

No contest on the freebie.
