Yeah, sorry about the armchair psychoanalysis. That was because I was watching "Lie to Me" while writing the comment and let my imagination get away from me.

Also, I think this whole thread illustrates that you are a reasonable person, as always I look forward to catching your comments as I lurk Slashdot

Still lashing out? This time without even making an attempt at civility. Of course I could be wrong about you being defensive, but continued attacks don't really go very far in supporting your case. It's quite obvious from this last post that you (likely) have deep seeded anger and hatred towards fundamental Christians, and mothers who give their children undeserved praise (I assume that's what you were getting at). Yet even that is a deflection from the raw anger that spurred you on when I stated that you care about the words and actions of people you hate. You can attack my opinions all you want, but it doesn't negate the fact that such high spirited emotional reactions aren't triggered by people or topics you don't care about.

You're a smart guy, and I've agreed with you a lot around Slashdot, and yes it is a tough moral question whether to listen to the words of monsters. But you seem to equate not listening to someone as the same as not caring about what they're saying, and I don't think that they are the same. It's a trivial point which (for some stupid reason) I felt compelled to share with Slashdot, but I think your responses have been entirely out proportion. I really am sorry I stuck a burr into your paw over such a thing and hope you'll accept my apology.

  18. Re:Joke Time on Terrorists Bomb Moscow Airport · · Score: 1

Try to keep in mind a few things. First and foremost is that the Christian religion is already on top, and because of that it appears as a far less threatening institution (as long as you aren't gay).

Also keep in mind that many of the more catholic nations are already living under a form of religious law called Catholic Doctrine, which for many years was regarded with the same alarmist fear and hatred that we see towards those places in which sharia law exist.

Secondly I'd like you to consider the fact that as a religion grows it absorbs more and more people with weaker beliefs. My favorite illustration for this are the "Christmas and Easter" churchgoers or the "non-practicing Catholics". Including more and more people who appreciate the core values of a religion but don't have the interest, discipline or patience to practice the more invasive rules of their faith, usually leads to the rules being diluted. This effect is why many non-traditional or forbidden concepts in the Christian faith are gaining more acceptance in the society itself. I suspect that increased evangelism for the Islamic faith would lead to a similar tenancy to the moderate (which it has in most places).

As for the Islamic faith spreading into regions where there is terrible suffering or major natural disasters, preaching to people under such stresses leads to a far higher conversion rate. When someone has lost everything they will often turn to anyone who offers reasons or comfort. It's why the Mormons were able to draw so many new recruits to their faith after Katrina.

I don't know about the MPAA or the others, but i know the whole point of the ESRB was that it was a voluntary measure the video game industry took on itself in order to avoid something like the Comic Book Code getting created by an outside group.

The Comic Code Authority isn't an outside group, it was the comic book publishers getting together to self regulate their industry. The code had no legal authority over anything, the only disadvantage was that some distributors wouldn't sell comics that weren't approved. (Some publishers still published without the code)This is akin to mature rated content not being carried by some distributors today.
