Another cool thing about SDL is that it supports various languages through its bindings. For example I tested the guile/scheme binding a while ago.. the code needed to get things on the screen was only a few lines... sorry to say, but it lacked some features and crashed in my face.. but at least in my mind it would be awefully cool to prototype effect/AI/ ideas etc using SDL and Scheme. Other people may already have some experience using SDL with other interpreted languages?

Yeah, well, in my opinion it's the other way around.
The Internet Appliance companies are running away from Linux and want to do business with Be instead. At least, that's what Be claims. Unfortunelately, Be don't have capacity to help everyone into the new market.
A list of Be's partners can be found on http://www.be.com/partners
You'd need a multithreaded kernel for the app_server on BeOS to work. FYI, Be's kernel is rock stable doing all it's neat tricks.
At least if you've got hardware with "correct" drivers. And you can't blame Be for not getting spec for Nvidia etc.
It's not possible to GPL what remains proprietary from Be (because of it's partners, or because it would require substantional engineering effort to clean up the code for release, that is: someone must pay for it to happen). However, the source code that most developers desire, the Tracker and Deskbar is available on http://www.opentracker.com. And the developer tools are not limited to the professional version either.
To quote from Be's website:
However, Companies who develop software for BeOS desktop PCs are encouraged to take advantage of free resources like BeOS Personal Edition, BeOS development tools, and more. It is possible to create quality BeOS software without paying a dime.
If you think there's no applications, check out http://www.bebits.com
Arghh. Be started in 1990, before Apple was in trouble. The aim has been more modern computing in general. That includes Media, Internet, etc. Of course, Internet is a much better word for hyping so they use that for now.
You know, it's year 2000. Linux, basically technology from 1972, is the hottest thing. It will always be. Shame on you for wanting something better!
Franky I think geeks love to poke around in the/etc directory and recomplile their kernel. It gives us a feeling of control. I used to be that way myself, until I figured that I'd have much more time for actually developing stuff under BeOS, rather than fixing broken installations all the time.
He's in fact working over at http://www.adamation.com
I enjoy his articles as they're very uplifting. You'll find articles by other people as well, but they seem unable to capture Be's ideas.
Rather, it's the Internet Appliance division of Intel that invested in Be, not as an CPU company. Be's also working on National Semiconductors' Geode chipset, which is perfect for Internet Applicances.
Linux networking will beat BONE? How can you know, it's not even released yet... Howard of Be (who's writing the thing from scratch, hence no recompile of the BSD as many think) have a promised 2000% performance increase (with non-optimized code), as well as BSD compliance but multithreaded....
All negative comments I've seen so far are similarely mistaken, please don't post crap - dear linux people!!!
Running BeOS under VMWare is not a very cool thing to do. BeOS access APIC features more often than other operating systems, and that makes BeOS under VMWare very slow. Look out for plex86 for BeOS! You also want to run BeOS natively if you want good media performance and low latency in drivers. You simply dont run BeOS "just for the applications"... yes, that's sad but true... at least for now.. The situation should improve as more developers and people try out BeOS.
I took a look at their Quicktime server code.. gosh! That's not what I call clean source. Besides, it's just a server.. not something that other programs can use. And, its Apple 'open source' license. AFAIK it's not approved by opensource.org.
Let's do this the Right Way... Open Source right from the beginning. The OSSMAPI can serve as a reference API... we invite you to help us define data structures and the programming interface.
Wouldn't it be nice to just #include "ossmapi.h" and be able to stream a mp3 or mpeg file from your little application without having to worry about streaming works or what client your "partner" is using?
Please don't start a new flame war, streaming media is in fact an area that developers on both platforms can work together to define an Open Source standard.
In our project (see URL) we want to implement streaming media using the Media Kit, but with a very good API design it should be easy to implement the ideas and interface on Linux as well. Therefore I invite people to work with us.
Accidentally, we're three Computer Science students working on what we think will be an intuitive and flexiable Streaming Media API. In fact, it's the final project in our education.
We know codecs are evolving. The codecs are not really the issue, the programming interface to the codecs is. What we need to do is to establish an Open Source alternative to the Win32 Streaming Media API. Our project is still in the planning period but we've already decided to work with the Open Source community.
Check out my URL or search for streaming on SourceForge if you want to help out with the API design or have other ideas for the future of streaming media! Think C++/Java classes, well-defined objects and so on.

yeah, what kind of philosofy is this? I agree that open source software is cool, but 'opening' software that's already developed in a 'closed' way wont make it true open source. why? because the 'closed' start gives the software a given design that you cannot change without rewriting the whole program. yes, you could steal some code from a so-called 'open sources' beos, but it would not be very useful. and I think Be is the best people to fix their own bugs. as for drivers... you dont need the source for the os it self to do that. lesson over!
Just the system software? I'd that's quite important. I want Amiga Corporation to open source AmigaOS, develop GUI solutions and maybe licence the BeOS. Add the Dual G4 motherboard from www.siliconfruit.com and things could get interesting for people who really want a new platform! -JK
Sorry, just saw the Star Trek movie "Insurrection" last night...

Very (Be) Groovy... I understand your view. Really!

It's not limited to MP3. It fits in 6 MB with a complete browser. It comes with a Management and Administration Platform. Do some research, please!
