He used to summarize the articles on his blog, and then submit the link to his blog on Slashdot instead of linking to the original article, which netted him ad dollars every time someone visited. Now, he submits links to the original article, but still gets a link back to his blog (if you click on his name). Most Slashdotters still hold a grudge against him for his past actions, which is understandable since he was essentially spamming.

Apparently, there is no way to limit the size of the cache.

I still use Safari over Firefox or Camino as the page rendering and scrolling are much smoother on Safari. I've tried changing the scrolling settings on FF and Camino, but the scroll acceleration on Safari seems to be more refined.

I was about to ask, "what happens if your Internet connection goes down?" ...but your post appears to answer my question.

Working at a small office, it happens, usually just for a few minutes, and a router/DSL modem reboot will often cure it, but sometimes there's an actual outage. At home, we had our cable modem service go down for several days after a strong thunderstorm.

  15. Re:Incandescent tax would be better on Australia Outlaws Incandescent Light Bulb · · Score: 1

Good comment. IMO, the CFL candelabra bulbs look awful and are bulkier than an incandescent. Also, R40-sized dimmable CFLs are very hard to find. Personally, I like the look of a non-frosted (clear) incandescent lamp in fixtures where the bulb is exposed.

The slow warm-up time and flickering (in cold temperatures) of fluorescent lamps, plus the eyesore factor if you can see the lamp, make them inappropriate for some uses.

  16. Re:No your math is wrong (follow up) on The Power Consumption of Modern PCs · · Score: 1

Those candelabra CFLs look dreadful... A lot of fixtures which expose the light bulb are more aesthetic with clear, incandescent bulbs.

I have and use CFLs, but only use them on fixtures that will be turned on and remain on for a long period of time, as every CFL I've seen takes a while to reach full brightness.

Preconfigured images and cloning are great if you have identically configured machines. Actually, I've used a commercial Windows program called "Snapshot" that could be used for application installs on non-identical machines. So you could get Windows installed, start the software, install Office like you want it, and the software would build an "Office Install" snapshot that would do a one-click install and config without needing any media or pushing any other buttons (assuming you had the Snapshot software installed on the client).

Anyway, this isn't a realistic option for home and small business users.
