  6. Re:Why do I want to watch a movie on my cellphone? on 3G Cel Service Starts in Japan · · Score: 0, Troll

to understand why the japanese would like something of this nature one would have to live in japan, like myself.

the japanese do not drive to work; the japanese generally do not drive that many places on a daily basis for that matter. their standard transporation is the train, via a 30-60 minute ride each way, daily. so, during that time what else is there to do in the middle of a crowded train? this is where services like this come into play.

in japan, those with the most disposable income are the ones that drive the economy here: young, 20yo, females who make $2000/mo and still live at home, therefore having $2000/mo in disposable income. the economy and businesses tailor to their needs. cell phones are generally bought and used more by this crowd than any other here, therefore it only makes sense to come out with a service that would fit their needs.

right now the craze is imode and email via your cell phone. the next craze will be watching movies, downloading songs and watching videos on your cell phone...all being done by giggly twenty-something girls with nothing better to do than spend their $2000 of disposable income on NTT!

just because Washington can levy _fines_ on MS does not mean that we are fucked. what they can do is issue an injunction barring the sale of the software within the state. sure, it doesnt stop people purchasing the software via the Internet but to the casual person the fact that their own state has barred the sale of the software from within state lines would surely be enough to hurt MS. this would mean that all government agencies within NY couldnt purchase XP and any business headquartered there. it might very well work, you never know.

  9. I currently live in Japan... on Software In The Land That Time Forgot · · Score: 2

...and this is wrong. The ISP market is wide open, with many choices for dialup providers (even free ones too) and PC prices are quite comparable to that of the states, sometimes better.

Setting up an ISP takes all of an hour or two, over the phone without any credit card transactions necessary, and is much smoother than anything I have ever done in the states.

I think this article trivializes the many changes that have taken place over the last year alone, much less the last 3. As more and more people realize the Internet through their iMode phones, and understand that there is more to it than that small screen provides, more and more computers are being sold. While Japan may not offer as much in terms of product diversity in their computer stores, the fact is that prices are continually dropping and are not unreasonable.

  12. odd things about this lawsuit on Launchcast Sued · · Score: 1

seems really odd, how the RIAA decides to act now, after Launch negotiates a license and then by the lack of action on the part of the RIAA, Launch must assume that the licenses were appropriate and acceptable. seems to me that it's as if the RIAA is purposely trying to cause major setbacks for the service seeing as a lawsuit does more harm than good not that the service is launched.

what is even odder about this is that WMG, EMI and Sony hold equity stakes in Launch, who are now supporting a lawsuit against a company that they are part owners of. why the hell would these companies want to sue themselves?

  14. Microsoft Windows Media Player on Gracenote Reponds Regarding Roxio Lawsuit · · Score: 3

Windows Media Player will obtain CD artist and track title information, just as most other similar software will do. Reading over the feature list for WMP7, the use of CDDB is not mentioned at all. Even ZDNet noted this in a review of WMP7. Seems that Microsoft didnt want to pay Gracenote either and has chosen to use AMG, though I am sure that Microsoft did pay a license fee of some sort. Regardless, it sure is interesting how Gracenote seems to have let Microsoft slide and chosen not to even attempt to tackle a lawsuit against them for not using their service yet they are pissed at Roxio. Nice of them to be convenient with their choices of who is infringing and who is not.

Guess they figure that Microsoft has too much money to invest in lawyers, as compared to Roxio, and therefore they would probably risk too much in litigating against the big boys in Redmond.

Check out the research conducted by the RIAA. Take a close look at the screenshots of Scour Exchange and you will see that MOST of the files that they are downloading are not even FULL movies. I would be willing to bet that many of the "movies" they found on SX were trailers that people had downloaded and placed in their shared directories for download. The thing that I wonder is why is everyone of these major organizations jumping to the legal system as their primary means of problem resolution?

  20. NetPD Broke Bot Restriction? on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 1

What I find interesting about the research gathering that NetPD did is that the only real efficient way of doing it would of been through automation. Using automation would seem, to me, to be some sort of bot. Napster's service explicity states that all bots will result in permanent bans from the originating IP's. Why has NetPD not been banned yet? Or...were they simply using humans behind keyboards, capturing screenshots, in which case would seem that would be error filled.

  21. How to use Napster legally? on The Napster DMCA Defense · · Score: 1

All these people say that they use Napster legally, but I wonder how exactly can that be done? The majority of legal MP3's are from unknown garage bands that are found on the net, through MP3.com or wherever else. Seeing as these bands are unknown, and the masses would have no idea of their name, then that makes searching for an unknown band almost impossible. Napster REQUIRES that you know of either the band name or the song name PRIOR to conducting the search, unless you are just randomly typing words in the search box. Because there are no built-in methods for promoting artists then how could someone realistically use Napster for legal purposes?

I am fairly certain that everyone that has used Napster has used it illegally as that is it's draw - the fact that there are illegal MP3's available for download. Had there been solely legal MP3's, do we honestly believe that it would of gotten to the magnitude that it is at today?

These players, with the exception of the Kiwi player, have been known about for quite some time now to those of us who closely follow the MP3 scene:

MamboX: shipping delayed from Nov 99 until mid Apr 00. D'Music MP3: shipping delayed from Feb 00 until mid Apr 00. Kiwi MP3 CD Player: quite possibly shipping any moment.
