  1. Re:as much as aol sucks on AOL + Time-Warner Worse Than Microsoft? · · Score: 1

One reason AOL has so many users is that the majority of people who use computers now are users, not programmers or administrators. They have career and personal responsibilities that they devote their time to that is more important to them than spending time learning to search for and use all the web has to offer. They don't eat, sleep, and drink computers like many /. readers do. To them, the internet is a leisure time activity, chat with friends, find out what the newest movies are, etc.

Because when I was in school I debated between becomming a programmer, or a registered nurse. I enjoy computers, but found nursing to be much more rewarding to me. I use an ISP for surfing, and connect to AOL using TCP to keep in touch with my friends who would rather have their hands held while using a computer. And that is not because they aren't capable of learning to get online without AOL, but it is more important to them to learn how a ventricular assist device or pacemaker works.

  2. The people factor on Y2K Rollover - Post Your Experiences Here! · · Score: 1

While out at a club last night, a man sharing a table with my girlfriend had a terrified look on his face when he asked us if we had heard about the all the problems with credit cards in New England. Both my girlfriend and I busted out laughing, and the man was a bit embarrassed when he learned the the problem was with a few thousand credit cards in England, not New England. And then there is the Y2K version of "A Country Boy Can Survive", which reminds me of a post I saw somewhere, I think ZDNET, titled "Darwin". Some survivalist was encouraging people to horde food, guns and gas. Personally, I haven't bought any bottled water, but did stock up on beer. A person can't be too careful, can he/her? As far as the debate over when the new millenium actually starts? All it really means is we get to celebrate it twice. We can be sure that it will be hyped just as much when 2001 rolls around. Is there a point to this post? Probably not. Happy New Year everyone.

Why do we go out to restaurants when we can cook a better meal at home, or to bar when we can drink alone. The natural laughter of viewers during a comedy is certainly better than the canned sound track. It's the experience that makes theater what it is.

No, you're not being paranoid...there all over the place here. Wouldn't be surprised if there was one in the commode I used on my way home from work this morning. Now what I want to know is who do talk to about collecting royalties on all these images of myself floating about?

  6. Re:Why must these be rated for newbies? on Linux Distributions Rated on CNet · · Score: 1

With all the publicity about M$ and their monopoly, there are many unfamiliar with Linux who are seriously considering alternative OS's right now. Because it stresses the ease of installation and helps remove the fear of blowing up their machines, a review of distributions like this one by CNet is exactly what is needed to help them choose to switch.
