i was just in the bookstore yesterday looking through several computer gaming magazines that were discussing building the ultimate gaming system and they all showed tests between amd and intel, and intel was ahead. i have yet to see any tests show otherwise, maybe you can give me some url's? i have nothing against amd or intel.. i'll buy whatever performs the best and priced well.. i don't understand why everyone on slashdot seems to be anti-intel and praises amd. every post about amd being good gets moderated up.. i know intel has invested money in linux (red hat, and suse i think and probably others) so i don't see why people here would be against them. what has amd done for linux? i never see any articles on slashdot about them investing millions for the development of anything in linux...
your kidding about "athlon's superior performance over the p3" right? in every test i've seen the p3 outperforms amd at the same clock speed. i have a computer with an amd in it and it just gathers dust, even though its clock speed is faster than my other computers.. it just doesn't run as fast. amd may be out of the group with crappy processors like cyrix, etc. but i still don't think its anywhere near intel.
i doubt they'll be selling it for $1, it will probably be as pricy as redhat for x86 is in stores cause i'm sure they're going to provide tech support for the first 30 or 90 days with it. if you want it for $1 go to one of the many sites that sell it without support
sure alot of games are filled with blood and guts, with your whole objective is to kill everybody.. but the keyword here is not blood, or killing it is "game". videogames are exactly that, games.. they have no effect on any normal person that would cause them to act the games out in real life. if the person is influenced by a game to go kill people, well guess what if it wasn't for the videogame it would have been something else that "made" them do it. its stupid people blame things like that school shooting on a video game and sue the makers of it... they act as if there was no bad people in the world before videogames. what videogames did hitler play? i don't think people honestly believe games have any effect on their stupid kids, but instead see a chance to cash in on a big lawsuit like every other american. instead of announcing they want to sue everyone after their kid shoots up a school, how about they just announce "we were bad parents, we didn't pay attention to our kid and never noticed he was stockpiling guns in his room." or "our kid f*cked up, and now he has to deal with it by sitting in jail for the rest of his life, and we won't be filing any stupid lawsuits because we understand people make mistakes and they have to pay for them." god i hate lawyers, it seems like ever since that idiot that spilled coffee on herself at macdonald's and sued them and won like a million bucks every american walks around with the attitude "hey if i have some kind of accident or if something happens to me then i'm gonna sue anyone and everyone that is directly and indirectly involved because the world is not perfect and someone has to pay for it!" ugh sorry to rant about lawyers.. just fed up.. when will it end?
it runs fine on my p2 350/160mb/tnt2 , just download the x server from nvidia (i would get the one with glx built into it, you'll get more fps with it) and then configure x with modes 640x480 and what other modes you use, then start quake3... you have to have 640x480 set because it initially starts up at that resolution so if you don't have it it will not work, and for whatever resolution you want to play in you'll need it set in your x config file. (i get around 25fps in 800x600 texture quality all the way up)
i really don't even understand why the usa has to be so bitchy about crypto products... i hope someone develops better ones like gnupg and bans the usa from using them:)
read his plan and you could answer your own q's. the windows version will show up in stores first, then the mac and linux will arrive a few days later. the windows will only have the binary for windows, the mac will only have the binary for mac and the linux version will only have the binary for linux. you will not be able to download the binary for another platform till after christmas. the first patch they will release, after christmas, will allow you to convert any version to another. if your gonna buy this game i would wait the few extra days and get the linux version as he said he could care less how many people buy the linux and mac versions, as the next games they make they will for sure support them... but other companies will be looking at the sales of them to determine if developing for multiple platforms is profitable.
i originally bought a voodoo 3 3000 right when they came out and had bad performance with glide in quake games so i took it back and got a tnt2 ultra (also cause voodoo 3 is a 16bit card) because i knew nvidia would put out drivers. now the voodoo cards perform as well as in windows (so i hear), and the tnt2 well... it just sucks for 3d. i wish nvidia would get involved with the xfree 4 snapshots like 3dfx has lately. i've waited a few months with this card cause i don't want to support glide because its propriety, but now it looks like the only thing keeping me from it is the tnt2 being 32bit.... hell most things in linux require you to change to 16bit and don't support 32bit.. so maybe your right there is no question of which card to buy....

i agree, blame all the lawyers of this country. living in the united states has become an embarassment
