If you're working on any kind of software that could piss off large corporations - console hacking, proprietary protocol reverse-engineering, DRM-breaking, etc - host the project on a darknet site anonymously so they can't send you takedown notices or sue you. This should be common sense by now.
The SpongeBob episode where Squidward traveled to the future and everything was made of chrome may turn out to be oddly prophetic. Maybe it wasn't actually chrome, but just a very glossy finish.
The danger of laser-blinded pilots isn't comparable to the cell phone scare, it's far from theoretical. Pilots have been temporarily blinded by lasers. It happens all the time, we've just been lucky enough that there have been no crashes so far.
I wouldn't call for a ban, but laser blinding incidents should be taken seriously and should carry an appropriate punishment for attempted mass murder. Controls on the sale of preassembled powerful lasers might help too, since the morons that do this surely wouldn't be intelligent enough to do anything more than popping in batteries and hitting a button.
It looks like they made it with a rough mold and left the surface unpolished, resulting in the nerf-like texture (like you see on many automotive parts that were made with sand molds). They could sand and polish it to a mirror finish, although they might want to collect the dust...
If you even had any sim experience you'd know that you make more and more corrections as you get closer to touchdown. Sometimes you even get some ground effect just before touchdown and the plane wants to float just over the runway below normal stall speed. IIRC a plane had this problem at Pearson Int'l a few years ago, overshot the runway and crashed.
Seeing as how flaps are down and you can't power up the engines or risk shearing off or damaging the flaps and there isn't much time to react and do things when you're in the landing stage anyways.
Uh, what?
You can run the engines at max power with flaps down. Commercial airliners do this on takeoff. On most aircraft there is a speed beyond which you shouldn't lower the flaps, but I've never heard of any that recommend limiting power with flaps down. Although I guess it's possible if there's a plane where the jet exhaust points right at the flaps (can't think of any...that would be a stupid design).
If police pilots were actually trying to get people to laser them, from the relatively short distance where they'd be able to pin-point the perpetrators, then at least those police pilots know it's not a real danger.
Modern aircraft pretty much land automatically, those that can't still have pilots that can do an instrument landing.
But this is no argument against the danger of a pilot being blinded with a laser.
The safest way to land the plane is on auto-land, with the pilots able to see the runway as well as checking the instruments. Increasing the danger to everyone on board because some asshole thinks it's funny is not acceptable.
True. It would be a more environmentally friendly world, but I wouldn't expect improvement in any other areas. There are still plenty of resources to fight over - lithium, fresh water, copper, and there would still be a market for fossil fuels for decades to come.
Yeah price wouldn't change much at all in the short term. The vast majority are still going to be driving gas/diesel cars for at least the next 5-10 years, every ship isn't going to get a fusion reactor installed overnight, and non-tiny aircraft won't be changing from liquid fuels anytime soon.
Why does someone--in this case "nashv"--care what product I use ("Ok , ok, I couldn't resist showing my distaste for those infernal locked down devices.")? Why does he care what type of cord a product he doesn't like uses? It's just mere human tribalism and partisanship. It's an "if you're not with me, you're against me" mentality. Beyond my that, just how unbelievably minor and petty, that so many people seem to need to come online and bash somebody's choice of cell phone or music device.
He probably doesn't like the fact that you're voting for curated computing with your wallet.
If Windows 8 doesn't flop and cause MS to wise up, you're going to see the very dark direction that you've helped lead computing towards.
just because your garden has flowers and pretty paintings on the wall doesn't make those walls any shorter.
Many people seem to think so...make a prison cell nice inside and many freedom advocates will jump right in and lock the door behind them. You see the same thing with Steam, anti-DRM folks using DRM because it's convenient (Apparently they don't play LAN games).
In terms of 3rd party device for support non-iDevices, does such a thing even exist?
Plenty, but I understand how you might think there are no accessories for non-iToys if you check shops in North America. You walk into any one of them and you can get stuff for iShinies, Blackberries, and nothing else. Good thing all the online retailers have a wide selection of standard stuff.
True it's a cat-and-mouse game, Apple doesn't want you to use anything but iTunes to sync the device and issues updates to break compatibility with any 3rd-party clients.
I don't know why people defend the use of these toys on Slashdot. They should be ashamed to admit they bought them.
Please tell me how ISPs could identify the host of an .onion or .i2p site.
Ahaha nice try, but that's a gaping goatse-hole.

Also the blog you're reading is your own blog.
Dyslexics UNTIE!

Shoo troll!

You might lose your couch under that coin...
Reminded me of this:

You missed this part:
This is not a solution -- we are not suggesting that pilots should be required to routinely wear laser safety glasses.
Starting an arms race with the morons doesn't seem like a good idea.
The same as the difference between seeing a lightning flash from your car and having some asshole drive towards you with misaligned HID high-beams.
+1 for this.

Oooh! I guessed right!
