I know where you're coming from, but my defense of FF games is the same as my gripe about the FF movie: You're never going to get as involved with a 2 1/2 hour long story, as you are with a 100+ hour story. FF7 was by far my favorite title of the series, and it was also the one I played the longest. The characters simply become more "real," the longer you spend engrossed in the world.

Besides.... who would you rather look at? Yuna, Lulu, and Rikku? Or Mike Wazowski and Buzz Lightyear?

I'm all for "converting the heathen masses," as it were. I like it when I see people looking for an alternative, and I can show them that alternative. It gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. But what I CAN'T stand, are people who abuse public forums. A lot of "newbies" treat people like me as if we were their personal tech support. I sometimes feel like HP in CmdrTaco's story: People to whom I owe nothing, and do not benefit at all from helping, treating me as if it is my duty to help them.

Just this week, (in one of those sporadic moments of EFnet connectivity), I was talking to one of my friends in a channel. Some guy who was installing linux for the first time had joined our channel, looking for ppp help, which anyone would have been happy to give him... could he remain civil. Unfortunately, he kept spamming with "PLZ HELP NOW!!!", "Y R U IGNORING ME?", "KWIT TAKING 2 HER AND HELP ME!!", et cetera. I was, as you can imagine, annoyed. If "making Linux mainstream" means I have to be the private and personal tech support monkey for every ungrateful Windows user who decides to give it a shot... then I'm content with Linux as a niche OS.

  5. Movie/Game similarities on The Tech behind Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within · · Score: 1

The plot of the movie was very similar to most of the games. Hero must save the world, most travel through time and/or space in order to do so, and there's a nice love story along the way. I felt that Gray's three troops were a nod to the Turks, of FF7. Aki picking the plant in Old New York City reminded me of the scene in FF7 where Aerith is selling flowers on the lowest platform of the city. If you took FF8's Seifer and dyed his hair black, you'd have General Hein. The good doctor was named "Sid," and characters by the name of "Cid" have made appearances in many FF games. We had the Gaea/Gaia theme once again. I thought the Zeus cannon might have been a reference to Odin, who has made a few appearances in FF games. The big black guy who travelled with Gray reminded me of Barret, from 7.

In the exact same places, the mpeg breaks into big blocks on the screen (the same way Time Warner's digital cable likes to break up... heh). The Phillips player just keeps on chucking through the bad sections, and my Apex skips ahead to a good section. We probably just both got bad discs. 9. Why AIM, why not ICQ? on AOL-TW Merger: FCC May Require AIM Compatibility · · Score: 3

I don't understand a whole lot about mergers and such. So it seems odd to me that all the fuss is being made over AIM and not over ICQ. Their stats, however fudged, claim that ICQ has at least 20 million more users than AIM. Does anyone really *want* to talk to AOL users, that isn't already an AOL luser themself? That's the only benefit of using AIM over ICQ (unless of course you LIKE advertisements... but they've added those to ICQ now, too). So it seems to me that this is less about instant messaging, and more about opening up AOL's ISP lusers to the rest of the internet.

Most people can't stay objective in a debate on Libertarianism vs. The Rest of You Socialist Bastards... see what I mean? Our opinions are strong, our words harsh, our emotions get involved and then we start throwing punches. I'd like to think I'm mature enough to handle a good old fashioned argument. However, when a dinosaur who still lurks around the office told me "you only like gnome because you're too young to know any better" I got pissed off, and responded in kind. Same principle. As long as people believe that their choice of language/gui/linux distro/OS/text editor/etc makes them superior to the Unenlightened Everyone Else, advocacy hurts more than it helps. You don't change anyone's mind, you don't make them think, you just push them farther away.

The emporer's daughter was created solely for this television adaption.

Shaddam IV had a daughter named Irulan. Yes, they took great liberties with her character in the TV adaptation, but she was not "created."

There were no weirding modules in the television mini as there should have been, nor did Paul use the weirding voice to crash the ship that was taking he and his mother over the desert! Key to the development of the character's awareness of his abilities!

....and all of these elements left out of the tv miniseries were complete bastardizations of the BOOK. "Weirding modules" et al, were figments of Lynch's imagination and had no basis in Herbert's writing.

The "weirding way" refers to the Prana-Bindu training of the Bene Gesserit. This is basically an ultra-fine honing of the senses that allow one to discern what an opponent is going to do before he does it, because of the miniscule body launguance clues prior to the action. It also encompasses superhuman control over one's own body. In the book, the painbox scene is explained better than either of the screen adaptations: the mind's control over pain is what sets humans apart from animals. (Most wild animals will chew off a limb to escape from a manmade trap, so I never agreed with this theory -- though that's another discussion entirely.) The Voice, truthsaying, and prana-bindu are all part of BG training; but they are not synonymous.
