    I have a 2003 VW Jetta TDI (Turbo Diesel). Purchased in Concord California in July '03. The *lowest* mileage I've gotten on it is 49 MPG. I average about 54 Miles to the gallon. No white smoke. No diesel smell. It's got that diesel sound though. Blows away a friends Honda Hybrid. If you push him he'll admit that it's only getting about 35 MPG.

    I usually just shut mine down to hibernate with
    shutdown -h 25

    $ shutdown --help
    Usage: shutdown [OPTION]... secs|"now"
    Bring the system down.

    -f, --force Forces the execution.
    -s, --shutdown The system will shutdown and power off (if supported)
    -r, --reboot The system will reboot.
    -h, --hibernate The system will suspend to disk (if supported)
    -p, --suspend The system will suspend to RAM (if supported)
    --help Display this help and exit.
    --version Output version information and exit.

    To reboot is the default if started as `reboot', to hibernate if started
    as `hibernate', to suspend if started as `suspend', to shutdown otherwise.

    VNC is too easy to figure out it's running. Load up CygWin's SSH Daemon.
    SSH in.

    Move files in and out of his Desktop folder (C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Desktop)
    mkdir and rmdir directories with long and alarming names. They'll show up instantly on his desktop.

    Start up Random programs.

    Add and remove entries in his hosts file. www.cnn.com becomes www.spankmedaddy.com.
    The company intranet site becomes www.russianbrides.com

    "shutdown -h now"

    Much fun spread over many days can be had.

    I work for a smallish Engineering firm (~100 people).

    Systems Administration: 10 Linux Servers, 3 Solaris and 1 Windows (Proprietary project accounting software).

    Database Administrator: Oracle, Informix (for an external project), MySQL and PostgreSQL. I'm dumping Oracle and Informix and moving everything to MySQL and PostgreSQL eventually.

    Developer: Mostly custom Java WebApps. Some C++. Fair amount of SAS Procedures & macros.

    Network Admin: 3 T1's and about 30 Domains with associated mail and web servers. 2 of the T1's and about half of the domains are dedicated to external projects (billable=good).

    Desktop Admin: Patching up windoze desktops. I'm trolling around for victims to start a pilot OpenOffice/Linux conversion.

    General Help Desk: blurg. 'nuff said.

    Iâ(TM)m not easily baffled or daunted. Iâ(TM)m less susceptible to pressure or hype from the latest Software package, API or other doohickey that a sales droid tries to force feed me. Almost all problems are variations of oneâ(TM)s Iâ(TM)ve beaten my head against in the past. Itâ(TM)s true I wonâ(TM)t be suckered into 72 hour coding âoedeath marchesâ without a darn good reason. But thatâ(TM)s balanced by the fact that I have a pretty good handle on how long somethingâ(TM)s going to take and I can hit project milestones with ease. Itâ(TM)s also true that Iâ(TM)m less likely to keep my mouth shut if I think weâ(TM)re marching off a cliff. Most good managers think this is a âoegood thingâ [tm Martha (ainâ(TM)t bending over for the potpourri in the joint) Stewart]. I landed my last job and my current one because they wanted someone with a few scars. Iâ(TM)m not worried.

    I had to take a position as Sysadmin, Oracle DBA, Developer (mostly java) in order to keep my phony baloney 6 figures salary when my dot.com went dot.bellyup. Are there still jobs out there where you're just doing systems administration?

    I started at 20 hanging tapes and mounting disks (CDC drives... you screwed them in... only 80 megs... the drive itself was as big as a washing machine. I swear to Jebus! ), and "toggling octals" on PDP-11's and 32's (ATEX Publication Systems). Moved into coding on Vaxen (Pascal and C). Transitioned into being an Oracle DBA for a while. Then pure systems administration (Digital Unix [now tru64], Solaris and was a way early adopter of Linux in production environments. During the Dot.Bomb era I moved back into coding (Assembly, C++ and Java). Now at 42 I'm working for a small company doing Systems Admin/Oracle&MySQL DBA/Java Programmer. I think I'd probably go nuts if I had to pick one IT track and stick to it. I'm pretty sure I'm a lifer but then again I have tentative plans to retire at around 50 to a small college town and get a degree in history and take it easy.

    I was recently faced with this odious nonsense and wrote "respectfully decline to authorize" in large red letters. Also used the ever handy red pen to write "decline to answer" for some of the more looney questions (colored pens are your friend - makes the stuff you think important stand out). The young woman interviewing me gave the raised eyebrow deal when she reviewed it but otherwise said nothing. As I was still offered the job I don't think it hurt my chances. So you can say no. But be prepared for them to say buh-bye.

    Actually if your don't have anything better to do in the way too long fry's checkout line you can spot tampons. They're in the same section as the foil thingies of asprin, cold/flu, sewing kits etc. Your right that they seem to be a major "which of these items don't belong in this picture" item. I burst out laughing when I spied them.

    It's also great sport to evade, sneer at and defy the door droids set up to "check" your bag and receipt as you leave. I have fun explaining... "I bought it. It's mine. No you can't look at it. Buy yer own toys"
    Almost 8 years and nary a receipt doodled on yet [grin]
