I've been in IT since '79 and *every* job I've had has been an inside referral. The great part about it is that it bypasses all the keyword loving HR drones. The first time the HR hears about me is when I show up to fill out my 401K paper work.
I'm thinking that protection isn't going to be that big of a problem.
Mount a bunch of Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense guns so you have 360 degree line of fire.
Hook them up to buff computer network and program it to create a 1000 foot killing zone around the craft. So if they flip it on in a hostile area anything heading towards it gets turned into a cloud of debris.
And enough already with all the idiots and their "omgz!! it'll blowdz up like the Hindenburg!!".
And even though she was screaming from the highest mountain to anyone and everyone that would listen that doom was rushing towards them. That bad, bad things were going to happen. She was still made the sacrificial goat when the fecal material hit the rotating blades.
At the last dot.bomb I worked at there was some kind of arms race like thing going on with regards to "geeking out" your office.
The amount of time, effort and money these happy idiots invested in this endeavor was truly astounding.
The companies high lords of chaos (management) eventually shipped about 99% of the company offshore to Hyderabad and Bucharest (the 1% left in the US was, you guessed it, management).
The message being if you have the time to waste making your office "pretty" you might not have enough real work to do. At least from the point of view of the bottom line fixated management.
So these days I keep it spartan. Books (lots of java API manuals), maps on the wall (I do a lot of GIS related work). A couple of my large monitors display virtual fishtanks or random slide shows. And if you have tiled floors a good rug is a must.
It's opensource. Works pretty well and seems to be evolving pretty fast.

You'd run your billing through them. You'd be able to get your health insurance, Liability insurance (you want this) and 401K (since you do the match and the primary contribution you can sock away a bunch).
You'll also be able to shield quite a bit from taxes by running your business expenses through them too.

They rocked the world back in the 60's and early 70's.
They still rock the world with their unmanned space exploration.
But for about the past 20 years it seems that their manned space flight plan consists of very expensive (and sometimes deadly) joy rides.

Once worked at a place where a hyperactive VP liked to hold weekly (oversized) tricycle races through the cube farm. When she trained her beady little eyes on me I told her "You're not paying me to tear around like an idiot. Please don't embarrass yourself by asking me again". Tric races kind of died down a bit after that [grin].
I've always ditched any organized event that's scheduled outside of working hours. I have a family, friends and life outside work, thanks.
Some of the qualities *I* think make a good manager:
- Structure workload and staffing such that we're not working 24/7/365. I don't mind working hard during crunch times but if we're consistently clocking in 60+ hours and on a constant "death march" you're doing a bad job.
- Shield us from idiocy from above.
- Share the credit when things are going right.
- Share the blame when things are going wrong.
- I realize this isn't always possible but, a clear outline of where we are. Where we need to be in the next couple of months and at least a foggy sense of how we're going to get there is nice.
- I'm not a praise 'ho but every now and then I kind of like a little feedback as to how I'm doing.
- Want to see my face lite up? Give me a buff laptop, and screaming development server and up to date tools and software to work with.
Really. Government bureaucracies just aren't an efficient way to provide most services. Most of my dealings with municipalities have been fraught with corruption and incompetence. Please don't do anything more "for" me. Please.
I've put together 2 systems using the ams electronics CF-481 case. 8 exposed 5.25 bays using 300GB Maxtor SATA drives + a 3ware 8506-8 gets me close to 2TB at raid 5 (each system).
I think they priced out to about $3500 per server (not including my time $).
I wear two Resound Canta 7's HA's and the speaker phone on my treo 600 is usually good enough. Kind of sucks if you're in public and want to keep some measure of privacy though.
This looks neat too. The world's first Bluetooth for hearing instruments:
http://www.gn.com/gn_magazine/2002/november/the_ wo rlds_first_bluetooth_for_hearing_instruments
Bluetooth in the HA's themselves would be pretty neat. I could zot MP3's straight into my head. Might be asking a bit much given the space restrictions though.
Actually ping works pretty well. I have nagios monitoring my home servers from work (home servers monitor work servers as well). It's set to SMS my cell whenever anything goes wrong.
A few months ago nagios zotted my cell with system unreachable message. Called home and my GF told me she'd unplugged the power strip to plug in her Synthesizer. She proclaimed me "scary creepy" for knowing what she'd done only moments after she'd yanked the cable.
A prominent bay area bank that I'd been using for about 7 years up and decided I didn't exist. Checking with ~$4,000 - gone Savings with ~$3,000 - gone Money Market account with ~ $15,000 (6 months emergency fund) - gone Visa Card - dead
Took about 2 weeks to get it straightened out. Luckily I had an Amex card I could get cash advances off of otherwise I'd have been screwed.
Now I have a $500 in cash in an envelope shrewdly hidden just in case things break again.
Bluetooth stereo transmitters and receivers. No built in speakers. Not built into headphones. I want to plug my own equipment into both sides.
So far all I've found are jensens WBT310 but they work for about 1 hour and then die. You have to unplug them to get them to work again.
I've been using "Push" email with ChatterMail on my Treo 600 and my company's IMAP server for a while now.
No Mickysoft exchange server needed.

Diverse -that- gooberment.
And just use the pre-built Browser Appliance virtual machine.
Do these happy idiots know that ocean temp and currents influence weather patterns?
I'm not going to be too happy exchanging a few KW of electricity for another ice age.
Get a VW Jetta Turbo Diesel (TDI). My 2003 model gets ~53MPG running on BioDiesel.
I've always thought StrataLite was a cool concept. Put a few dozen of these rotating over the US and you'd have a pretty neat wireless network.

Is anyone aware of a MythTV distribution that you can just dd onto a tivo drive, boot and go?

That's just annoying and ignorant.

And this was for a federal agency.
Scary no?

You're not. Fugly and worse still with that funky handle on top and its shape it's not stackable.
I'm using a CoolerMaster Cavalier as a MythTV box. Fits nice with all my other Set top boxes stacked up on it.

About coding (Joe user would just describe what he wanted done to the computer and wah-lah. It would program itself).
About Databases.
And about sys admin.
Eventually, if they keep yammering out this prediction, they'll may be right.

70% of 30K is 21K or $1750 a month.
30K annual = a take home of $1975 for a single person in california.
Either way if they're spending $3200/month on bills they're farked for sure.
