Your point would be valid if I was coming into your home and smoking against your wishes. In any open public area, there are more pollutants than cigarette smoke in the air. Do you seek to prohibit all those as well? As for restaurants, you can choose to go to one that voluntarily chose to be smoke-free, rather than use the government to make them all smoke-free. Just like there are lousy vegan restaurants, there were lousy smoke-free restaurants without it being law.
By the way, I don't smoke. Cigarette smoke in particular bothers me, and worsens my breathing problem I developed in the military. I am not advocating smoking. What I am doing is resisting other people thinking they can take away my personal freedom (which is a broad concept, not a singular item) just because they don't think I should have it. It's not that I don't care what your or Slud's reason is. It is that you both start your arguments with assuming my reason is unfounded or ridiculous.
In my world, old enough to read the Second Amendment to the Constitution. In the modern country that conquered the United States of America last century, old enough to have enough money to bribe local officials.
Very few die from smoking related issues before age 40. The 35-44 year-old group went from 31% of that age population smoking, to 19%. There certainly was not a die off of 12% of that age group, or even anything close to it, smoking-related or otherwise.
No. The confusion was all the baggage in the explanation.
It mattered that it was the fifth David. It mattered that he was a graphic artist. It mattered that people are assholes. It mattered that it was 1997. It mattered that it's Creimer. And, most confusingly, it mattered whether I read "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson.
By the way, the letters 'D' and 'i' are also Roman numerals. Are we to assume the employee was actually called "Five-hundred-a-five-one-five-hundred"?
Funny thing is that out of their top 10 political donations, AT&T donated to 2 political candidates directly. They gave over $300,000 to Hillary and almost $80,000 to Bernie.
After that, it looks like they donated to every campaign in the country.
Exactly. I am on my third account on slashdot. Mainly because i was logged in on a computer before, that I no longer have access to. Same with email address to reset forgotten password. Solution is to make a new account.
So, again, you do not support gay marriage. Or any marriage. Good for you.
I've stated on this board and others that I think the government should get out of the marriage business Marriage was the province of the church that people attended. Suddenly the government decided they had to be involved, for less than honorable reasons. Now we have the mess we have. So, get the government out of all marriages.
Of course I think the federal government should get out of all our paychecks as well, so that would stop the tax breaks you don't like. One level of them anyway.
I've been saying for quite a while that we're heading towards another civil war in the US. And I don't mean like when the USSR collapsed, where it seemed one day it was there and the next we had the Commonwealth.
No. When we get to the tipping point, it is going to be more like Bosnia and Serbia. There will be a cleansing that will practically wipe our country away. And the 'practically' is no sure thing; I can see China leading a UN peacekeeping force, and then staying like the US did after WWII.
Not always. Sometimes we are trying to nap. Just give a small shove over if we start to drift out of our lane.

Or in the real world of adults who don't poop their pants when discussing reasonable compromises on personal freedom,
Sorry. Stopped reading right there. Can you rephrase your comment without thinking I'm going to give up my personal freedom just on your whim?
If you're determined to be unreasonable, then you can come up with any kind of excuses you want for shitty behavior.
I didn't know that wanting to keep my personal freedom was shitty behavior.
I mean, since you are obviously opposed to giving up your personal freedom just on the other guy's whim.
Willful ignorance is not a virtue.
Never claimed to be virtuous. Claimed to have personal freedom that means a lot more to me than someone who is claiming that it isn't worth shit.
In my world, old enough to read the Second Amendment to the Constitution. In the modern country that conquered the United States of America last century, old enough to have enough money to bribe local officials.
Thank you. That caught my eye too. With the pedants around here, I'm surprised I didn't see it in the comments above.
Well thank god I didn't pick up that used Introduction to Statistics book at Goodwill last week. Would have been a waste of $3.

How about we forbid people ALL unhealthy behavior

Your state's driving age is 21? That is one fucked up place.
What? You told me you loved my cat pictures! Mr. Frizzles is funny. You said to yourself.
Now I see how you are. Well no more feline beauty pageants for you mister.
And I'm going to tell Frankie to stop sending his skateboarding while drunk videos too. Once he's out of the hospital, of course.
That was my first reaction as well. Ask Mr. Nissan how hard he had to fight to keep his own.

As I said, they gave Hillary $300,000.
It isn't just trees making coal, then or today.

I'm not claiming we are going to use coal that is starting its transformation now. But it is happening.
Some disagree.

Did you just change your sig after seeing a link from yesterday? Because I just watched that scene last night. :^)

If you think public education is run by "credentialed, trained
teachers, you are one of those ignorant morons you mentioned earlier.
Wood is a renewable resource.
Technically, so is coal.

Best movie ever.

Wictor? Is that you?
Oh, yeah, also, marriage is such a huge commitment compared having children .
Maybe they didn't share your fucked up belief in this archaic ritual called marriage.
So, you don't support gay marriage?
