  1. Re:Another dot bomb on ProcessTree Gets Its First (Paying) Client · · Score: 1

Exactly.. I love doing distributed.net .. it's all just kinda a race between your friends to see who can do more units of work faster. I like to leave my computers on anyway for access reasons and also to slow wear and tear by power-cycling too much.

I thought ProcessTree might be good for that too, and hey, they might send you a couple of bucks a month for your trouble too. Not a *serious* money-making scheme. It's just for a bit of fun anyway really. If people can get research work done by using it, that's great.

Btw, I've heard people express concern about trojan binaries.. that can be a problem but downloading from trusted sites helps alleviate this. You shouldn't be using a client you got 'off a guy in the pub', but one from the organization that sponsors it (i.e. distributed.net). Also, don't run it under root, run it as 'nobody'.

I just had a look at my ProcessTree account and it seems they fucked up the accounts.. They had me down as having a lot of Mac G4/MacOS clients.. when in fact those numbers belonged in the Linux category (I have a Sun Sparc Classic that I put in the 'other' category and it somehow registered as a Mac G4 - I wish). I know it was set up right before, so it seems to have been corrupted. If you signed up for it, you might want to redo your account so they have the right information.

We're about to buy two new servers where I work. As it kinda fell to me to figure out a spec, I actually went for AMD as I like their chips. The machines we're getting will only have one processor (obviously as the dual board isn't out yet), but 1Ghz TBirds should be good enough for the webserving and database tasks that we require. Obviously piling in a large amount of RAM to each machine is the key factor.

If they need upgrading to a dual setup then I guess we could get a dual AMD board and go from there.. but by that time they might well need replacing with something else. I don't see that happening for quite a while yet though.

For new desktops I'll probably recommend going with AMD again as I like them, their chips are sometimes half the price of P3s, and they run better for the same clock speed.

I guess we will be gradually replacing Intel computers with AMDs :D

If things break even more under Netscape then that gets harder. I for one will be sticking with Netscape 4.7x and recommending to my company (We use Netscape for mail at work as well as internet browsing) that we do not upgrade until these things can be sorted out and proved to be better.

It'd be worthwhile for Netscape to realize just WHO is going to use the product and how releasing a half-baked piece of software does noone a service and will probably alienate yet more people against Netscape - something I thought they didn't want.

Sure, Access is usuable for prototyping and the odd table re-jig, but beyond that I don't much care for it :D .. I do certainly agree about using Oracle or Sybase if you need that power. I think I said as much before. MySQL does well for serving of a lot of content quickly, reading is very quick (not to say that other dbs aren't fast - but we're talking raw efficiency here). If you want to have users edit that content (like a discussion group) it can work very well, if you're finding its slow because of the locking then move on to something else, yes.
