*grin*.. that's what I said too when I read the news.. Dunno why it was marked down as 'troll'... It simply put the point across as I felt it anyway:)
YEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!:):):)
ATI support for Linux is a great step forward.. let's hope other manufactuers follow suit. I'm especially happy as ATI have wonderful drivers under Windows, so hopefully the same quality will filter over to the Linux ones too.
Definitely... Windows is FAR more innefficient for storage that Linux so it eats up all it's share while Linux still has masses free. Best to give Windows more space for game installs as well.. as they can be insane.
Well, my Linux partitions were fairly free until I started turning CDs into MP3s....
The whole point about distributed computing is that you don't NEED a cluster to be able to utilise many machines for a specific task... So a beowulf cluster of a particular set of linux machines would be no faster than if they were individual clients, IMHO.
Still, wouldn't say no to a lot of them regardless:D
This seems somewhat surprising, as I would expect Intel to pay close attention to the needs of their good pal, Microsoft. Hmm.. Have you read about the anti-trust case against Microsoft?.. I could have sworn that Intel didn't like MS at all.. let alone be a 'pal' of theirs. And again Intel was also investing in RedHat a little while ago too... So I don't think the welfare of MS is something Intel really gives a damn about, IMHO. Still, who can predict what will happen. Crystal ball gazing is always amusing..
(Ensue, ensue... I don't think that's a real word.)
Yes it is:).. it means to start, take place, happen or begin.
The new server is pretty quick (to add an 'aye, mate' to the other/.'ers out there. I tried hitting reload a few times on three separate links to the pages and all reloaded about 5 times quicker than the regular/... of course it's probably not FULLY loaded yet, so maybe a true test is yet to come.
I am one of the teaming masses who reads Slashdot daily. Several other employees here do as well -- we enjoy the news, and we want to be ready in case Linux becomes a supported platform for our games.
Do you feel that reading/. gives a good view of Linux?.. in some ways/. is a spleen venting ground for Windows vs. Linux arguments that get very purile after a while and in other ways it's enlightening.
Do you show/. to your superiors and tell them that's the market you hope to address with Linux products?.. if so and they *feel* Linux users are purile (not saying they are - I'm a happy and proud Linux user too!).. they might not leap at the idea of investing in Linux game development when Windows is perceived as 'safer'.
Are many of your fellow co-workers there Linux users at home?.. Do you feel you need more information about Linux?.. www.linux.org is a good place to start, as are lots of other places. The only thing I'm concerned about, reading this post, is that/. is (maybe) somehow viewed as the 'voice of the Linux users'.. when it's often 'the voice of the vocal portion of Linux users who have exceedingly bad grammer and interpersonal skills' and could create a bad impression with precisely the people Linux as a community wants to make a GREAT impression with if any games development is to get off the ground.
If you can, be an innovator for Linux games, not just 'if case it happens':):)
Seems like there's some serious MS arse-lickers out there in moderation land to get a couple of JOKES (this and the previous level post) branded as a 'troll' because it's about Gates-the-hellspawn. Maybe those moderators that love Micro$hit so much would want to chow down on the bugs instead of their 'overlord'?
I LOVE the idea of seeing Gates eat bugs really, although I wouldn't want to be cruel to so many perfectly innocent insects....
Hmm.. yea:/...that's a scary thought indeed.. it's always been great for people who like to roll (build) their own PC and with hardware becoming cheaper all the time it can (hopefully) only get better.
AMD make bloody good processors that are much more cost-effective than Intel's offerings of 3 times the price.. and as the other Intel / AMD topic on/. today talks of, Intel can't stand being beaten in that field so have to play dirty. Dunno why you'd want to side with the 'market bully'..
IMHO, the term 'great hacker' does not NECCESSARILY mean 'great programmer'... ask anyone who's been formally taught software engineering or computer science.
True though that intelligence does not guarantee programming talent, it might however allow one to express it and/or learn about it faster though.
Hmm... 'night' in space... This IS for space travel you realise?.. The sun doesn't just blink out every 12 hrs in space. And besides, you'll always have momentum even if there's less acceleration causes by planetary solar eclipses.
One thing I wondered about is the article is dated April 8th... wonder if it's been lying on Rob's cutting room floor for a while..
Yea, great isn't it?.. Linux at home and quite a lot out there serving our connections.. I think it's 2038 or something that the 32-bit date field is good to under Linux isn't it?.. nice lot of time to move to a 64-bit architecture.
Windows users might feel less happy, but even so.. it's probably still *nix that feeds all their connections too. Come Y2k, respect will be due;>
I've used Bladeenc (0.72 btw) at 128kb/s and I've had no problems at all with reproduction, even when I tried Pachibelle's 'Canon' to try out this idea that 'classical music in mp3 format sucks' and playing through a reasonable hifi I cannot tell any difference with the CD version and the mp3 version, at whatever bitrate (I tried 256 but the only difference was that the file was twice as big:D). Btw, I play mp3s with XMMS, dunno if that makes a difference... also on an AMD K6-2/300.. not sure if computer horsepower makes a difference either?
Each to their own, I guess. If you find something that works for you, then that's what you should use:)
And not just that, a developer too:).. ooh.. get the big guns out to face the Linux mob:D
There's SOOOOOO much trolling about who's OS is better than who's.. give it a rest ppl and appreciate life and love and happiness and live in harmony together...

Yea, but how often has Linux crashed on you?.. like really gone dead.. not just an X problem that newbies whine about 'Linux crashing'.
How 'ISPs do it' is just as this guy said (and I was going to mentiong too, seeing all this guff about serial switchboxes), by using ssh (or telnet if ya desperate)
Okay for your *particular* purpose when you're hacking the kernel it might require a more 'thorough' solution, but IMHO for most people's uses (as I'm assuming this person's original request was, as he said about ISPs) is that ssh and telnet will work fine for controlling multiple machines.
Hmm.. can you imagine the SIZE of such a schematic these days for current hardware?:D.. I bet the schematics don't even exist in printed form but inside chip design computers anyway.
There's also the competition these days in chip design.. think Intel want to print out their specs so that XYZCheappChips can come and copy them?:).. I know there's patent laws against such things, but it still might make industrial espionage a lot simpler, something I doubt any company in business wants to do.
Yes, a sure sign of the days past indeed. (play nostalgic tune):>

Hahahaha!!!
*LOL* .. Thanks, that made my day...
nothing more funny to see than someone making a 'first post' lame comment a full 18 minutes after the real first post..

Maybe some sort of 'off' switch is required ...
Really, it'd be possible to telnet or ssh to it and shut it down. Just prod a button to boot-up when you get back in the car so many weeks later.
Lovely idea though using it in the car.. mmm...

AppleII's were amusing, yea.. I seem to remember those little goobers with their tiny round screens and beige (or was it just dirty?) plastic.. aww..
