Considering ARM stands (stood?) for Acorn Risc Machines then yes they are related:).. the rights to the StrongARM were purchased by Intel when the software side split from the hardware side of the company.
At least that's my recollection from speaking to an Acorn owning friend (I'm not an Acorn person).. they're good machines:)
Too right!!.. the sooner the world is free of fucking idiots like this 'JP Morgenthal' the better for the rest of the world that want to move on to using a faster and more stable OS.
I couldn't believe my eyes reading such bullshit as 'Linux is just beginning to be retrofitted for symmetric multiprocessing.'.. WTF??.. it's had it for ages!!.. and 'Linux is a college student's project gone astray.' is just a sure sign the guy is a dickhead.
As someone mentioned earlier in this posts.. 'not the best way to start a monday'.. No, it surely isn't.
Heh.. just imagine if the Chinese buy up the remaining stock of nicely overclockable Celerons then and slap 'em together to make systems that are greater than the export regulations allow.
Seriously, the PlayStation a 'supercomputer'.. come on.. I don't call a 'games console' a computer by any stretch of the word. You can't go run any old OS on it can you or can you really get a PSX title of 'Nuclear Physics Simlation' ??.. jeez.
One thing is of note in the article, you can't stop technology once it becomes so widely available and prolific. Processor power increases almost exponentially.. nothing you can do (or want to do IMHO) to stop it - not that I advocate helping the Chinese take advantage of stolen secrets, that's a different thing.
It appears that Civ:CTP has gone back to the 'simplistic combat model' that Civ1 had. Indeed in a strategy guide in PC Zone (magazine in England) it talks about how all units have 10 hit points and the concept of firepower, introduced in Civ2 to make things more realistic, has gone. Ie. all units just do one point of damage per hit. So therefore a phalanx can beat a tank sometimes and if two phalanxes are stacked together then it's really likely the tank will fail.. against two guys with bronze spears??.. hello Activision??.. jeez.
Seems really sad to me that it's like that now, and I won't be buying the game (for any platform) because of it.. it's a huge step backwards.
Alpha Centauri here I come.. goes to show that "stick with Sid" is a wise motto for these games.

And anyway, the Ewoks were getting smacked until Chewy took over the scout walker..

I think that back in the 80's Bill G said something along the lines of ``nobody will _ever_ need more than 256 bytes".
Wasn't that the old DOS memory '640K will be enough for anybody' line?.. still, I fail to see why you'd need to be able to support 18TB files *JUST* yet considering noone even makes a 1TB HD or other storage device yet. Okay, you even RAID some HDs (22GB?) together and have yourself 0.1TB of storage.. whooo doesn't look like bouncing off the limits yet:)
Let's not worry about 'still' having 32-bitness yet... it's good to get the most out of things before moving on to new architectures, can you say 'backward compatible'?:)
I actually have problems with GNOME not STARTING, not with it dying on me.. and I've had sessions running for a reasonable time, like a couple of days and that's only because I feel the urge to go play games under winblows.
To deal with the gnome not starting problem I just kill the X server manually (Ctrl, Alt, Backspace) and then re-log in again with gdm and it works fine.. not sure if it's a gnome desktop or gdm problem.. anyone else had that too?
Also, why do you want to compile everything?.. seems like a waste of time to me.. you only need to compile programs you write yourself and the odd kernel update IMHO:)
Hmm... couldn't you get another computer for 600 bucks, thereby increasing your processor speed as you set up a processor farm of cheap machines?.. and saves all that plumbing work too. Very pretty but not very practical.
Sure it might be amusing to get a dual PII/620 machine going but I'm sure intel will be there soon anyway with room temperature processors and they'd probably cost $600 anyway..
Still, that said.. well done to the guy for making it work.
Dunno if I could last a whole week without checking email;)
Personally, I'm moving to the U.S. anyway to marry my fiancee so I guess then I'll be able to enjoy free internet access as well..
Even so, I'd love to see the U.K. get free local calls.. really crap without it.
Diamond Cable in Leicester (where I live currently) DID have free local calls, but THEN started charging for ISP calls.. so altho local calls are free after 6pm, a call to your ISP costs you money... tightwads:/
I always thought that Beowulf was just a setup involving rsh (remote shells) and not true SMP clustering which is what this thing from Sun purports to be isn't it?.. Like just run something on the cluster and the system figures out where it runs on. I read on NASA's site somewhere about the 'Hive' that runs Beowulf and they said there that it's all based around rsh and also runs out of process table space too.. hmm.
If I'm mistaken I'm sure a great many/.'er will correct me:)
Clustering IS a lovely idea for Linux... lots of cheap computing power.
I didn't actually mean use the drive solely as a RAID1 device, but rather to create an archive file (or a few backups of different ages and/or parts of the filesystem) on for access whenever.
Dunno about you, AC, but I find
tar -zxvf Backup.tar.gz /
fairly simple to do to get back any file I've ever needed to retrieve from my backups.
Yea tapes are cheaper, but HDs are MUCH faster to access:)
Getting a few HDs together and implementing a RAID5 system is much better for reliability anyway, RAID1 is probably a waste of time. Cheap IDE RAID is getting affordable.
Why the hell has my comment been marked as 'offtopic' anyway?... bloody moderators.. my question was at the very point of the article IMHO
Ho hum.. I hope Rob sorts this moderation crap out.. seems to be annoying everyone who posts valid things... just see the 'CPU Cooling Insanity' topic!
True, put in that context the previous 4 or 5 posts are true and okay I see circumstances that tapes are useful (and probably necessary).. for backing up financial records for tax purposes and for multi-terabyte databases.
But,
I was responding to the article about backing up just 22GB and for the home or semi-pro tape is just not worth the hassle any more (tapes stretch , to counter the 'heads crash' argument) when multiple disks (can you say RAID even if you want online reliability of data) can be had for much better performance.
Okay I admit maybe 'superceded' was a bit strong given the arguments raised, but I think anyone has to admit that storage capacity of HDs (vs. cost) has shot up incredibly against tapes in the last few years.
With the price and capacity of currently available hard disks, why on earth would you want to use tape anyway?
Why not just get one or two large 20+GB HDs and backup stuff to them on a regular basis. I've been using a spare HD for backups for years. crontab scripts creating tar-gzips.
I remember glancing through ads the other day that IBM makes a 22GB 3.5" IDE HD, which could backup that FTP server with no probs.
Tape is just slow these days and it's been superceded.. it might be cheaper but then old tech always is (until it becomes antqiue!:))
