not completely right. They used to be a monopoly but the markets have been opened up. (But since they had a very good starting point, at least with landlines, they still have a very dominant market share.) T-Online in itself has been spun off, and is traded on the german stock exchanges...but probably Telekom still owns a majority of the shares...

    • You have ideas outside of the mainstream. Let's say you speak out against nascent jewish nationalism and religious fervor in israel, which results in acts of opression and coercion of the palestinian people. Some might be offended by this and wish to violate your right to free speech through law.

Well that would not be that easy.
The laws in Germany restricting free speach, are not concerning hate speach in itself. (I can easily shout out that I hate the world and everybody and their mom without being arrested.
The thing that is forbidden are lies (against a certain part of history). For example what is called the "Auschwitz-Lüge" (claiming that Auschwitz never existed, and was just an invention of the US) and the like.

And remember the (West-)german political system was designed after the US's (those system are remarkably alike). So I'm not sure If in the descision to create this law, the US hasn't been involved.
So the result is trading ( a small part of) free speech against for comfort in the immutible moral standard (which was , at least in part, was imposed by the allies, in order to keep lies from spreading, like the "Dolch-stoss-legende" after WWI, which at least in part helped the NSDAP gain Power, in order to help keeping WW III from happening, or at least from keeping the germans from thinking they need to start it) from which you can deviate, as long as you don't state those (false-, as seen by current History books) views as facts publicly.
(I think that was my longest sentece I ever wrote)
IANAL, so I do not have an absolute view on that all, IANAH either (I am not an Historian either) , but IAG (I am german), so I might have a little one sided view.

I myself just took the data of the UNITED NATIONS CRIME AND JUSTICE INFORMATION NETWORK which offers international crime statistics in a database (Access 97)

    I took the Following numbers:
    Numbers of thefts/Robberies (Field 66a + 66b)
Numbers of Homocides ( Field 62e)

That's about what you wanted to compare, or?
Well I compared the numbers for USA and Germany (that's where I live, and I know that Gun's are regulated quite strict here) as of 1995 (The newest numbers available).

    The raw numbers are:
    USA Thefts/Roberies: 618.817
    USA Homocides : 23.692

    Ger Thefts/Roberies: 63.576
    Ger Homocides : 1.680

    Now considering the different population:
    USA : 272,639,608
    GER : 82,087,361
    (From CIA-Faktbook,all numbers from 1999)
Sorry for the discrepancy between ne numbers from 1995 and 1999 but that's the only numbers I got.

Now lets calculate the above numbers per 100,000 inhabitants:
    (rounded to the tenth)
    USA Thefts/Roberies: 226.97
    USA Homocides : 8.69

    Ger Thefts/Roberies: 77.45
    Ger Homocides : 2.05

  11. Music inc. on Feedback: Who Owns Ideas · · Score: 1
    Hi

What I understand while reading the comments, The biggest problem is seen in the big and ugly Recording industry.

Then why don't we render it obsolete?
While thinking about the whole situation, I kind of noticed a similarity between the Music business and the "internet Business".
Both live from Ideas. (One in form of Music, one in form of Business plans)
Both rely heavily on Marketing. (Look at the Marketing spending of Startups and at the ammounts spend by labels to push some music)
Both rely completely from customer satisfaction.
(I can think of more similarities but I hope you get the Point)
So, I think, why shouldn't we model the music business more after the internet scene: create "insert Band name here" incorporated!
We could have Venture capitalists which after listening to the music (instead of reading the business plan) invest money into the Band company.
The Bands should have a "CEO" (manager) which invests the money from the VC into marketing, recording and all the other stuff related.
If they are an success the VC company should get a (previously defined) share of the income.

Labels could change and instead make "consulting" business to the Band inc.
There would be no need for the Big Record company's anymore.

I hope you see what I mean. It's basicly about creating new (would this be new?) structures for doing the old stuff. What do you think?

Well even if this word has crept into the german language(we do use it), this mistake has a different origin. If you take the word "teenager" apart you have "Tee" = Tea and "Nager" (shortform of "Nagetier") = rodent.
