I agree. I think it would be much funnier if it were a collection of stories of people doing stupid stuff, but that didn't result in the harm of them or others.

  3. Not worth it on 95 Of Every 100 Windows PCs Miss Security Updates · · Score: 1

Except for the occasional windows patch, I don't think most of the patches really offer much benefit for the casual user. Is a tiny reduction in your vulnerability worth the effort/time it would take to run the update software/visit the manufacturer's web site for every piece of software that you own? I think the article would be more powerful if it stated 95 out of every 100 crash/identity theft/virus attack would have been prevented by a patch.

A situation similar to that described here happened in my family. My mother was looking for an inexpensive computer to just surf the web and check email. She purchased a super-cheap linux computer from Fry's. However, a couple of months later, the experience showed her that she needed a better computer with Windows.

I work for the University of Washington. This past summer, we ordered around 200 new Dells, that came preloaded with Vista (we had no choice in the matter). As soon as we got them, we used our site license to replace Vista with XP on all of our computers. I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens in other corporate environments.

  6. Goodbye Netflix on HD Monitor Causes DRM Issues with Netflix · · Score: 1

My long standing philosophy has been to reward businesses that treat me well with more of by business. When businesses disrespect you, don't reward them by giving them more money. Sadly, I believe that this is lost on most Americans. That aside, I have been using Netflix for about a year now (not for downloading movies, but for the old fashion mail service). I plan on canceling my account as soon as I get home. I would encourage those that are as outraged as I am to do the same.
