as you have ceartainly read in the press over the recent weeks, more and more Middletowners make use of wireless access points in their homes for convenient internet access. This is a great and promising new technology that will enable each citizen to acchieve greater goodness and universal wellbeing.
Unfortunately, as with each new technology, we face new challenges with this. More and more citizens complain about interference and genereal discomfort when their PC connects to the internet. In order for all citizens to continue to enjoy uninhibited internet access we will therefore have to put some structure into this.
City Hall has therefore decided to contract with WellMeaningCuteTelco, Inc to run our city's Wireless infrastructure. As you are all aware, WMCTI is a stable, well regarded Telecommunications service with decades of experience with this kind of business. All citizens will be able to rent an accredited WMCTI access point for their home, to connect to WMCTI's broadband service, for the small added charge of only US$14,95/month. WMCTI also hopes to enable access to other telco's broadband connections from its wirless APs, but there are still some technical issues to solve. In order to avoid undesired interference all access points not licensed by WMCTI have to be shut down within 3 months after this notice. Our environemental affairs office has a brochure ready for you how to dispose them in an evironmentally acceptable manner.
I sincerely hope you all enjoy our new service and wish you all well connected surfing.
Sorry folks. I've read that thing. That book make a fedw good observations on weak point of the US school system. But aside from that, this guy is a complete utter bullshitter.
His historical excurs is laughably xenophobe and tries to appeal to the ultra right-wing America-Über-Alles crowd that hangs out in places like the FreeRepublic. His comprehension of European history and school systems - on which he bases much of his argument - is cursory at best and full of embarrassing misunderstandings.
But his worst sin is that he does not event attempt present a credible counter concept for universal education. Given that, his counter concept seems to be "abolish mandatory schooling". Since we all fully well know what that means for large parts of the population (substantially worse education than it gets now) this is utterly cynical elitism - "let thet great unwhashed masses go to hell".
Not to mention that quite a number of industrialized nations (not the least of them his despised Germany) have school systems that work quite well and lack most of the weaknesses he lambasts so loudly on the US system.
When people don't find satisfying answers, they turn to the classics. And while the Britsh as well as their colonists unvariably end up with Shakespeare, Germans tend to dig out Goethe or Schiller.
And of course, Goethe's Faus is as fruitful as ever:
Of course, I am smarter than all the shysters, The doctors, and teachers, and scribes, and Christers; No scruple nor doubt could make me ill, I am not afraid of the Devil or hell- But therefore I also lack all delight, Do not fancy that I know anything right, Do not fancy that I could teach or assert What would better mankind or what might convert. I also have neither money nor treasures, Nor worldly honors or earthly pleasures; No dog would endure such a curst existence!
Proof! World literature uses "syster" sysnonymous for lawyer ! Case dismissed ! Film at 11....
All top German federal courts can and do issue decisions that are binding to the lower courts. What you call the "Federal Supreme court" , i.e. the Bundesverfassungsgericht, only judges constitutional issues.
Also the State Appeals court (Oberlandesgerichte) decisíons are widley considered by lower courts and have quasi - though not strictly - binding character.
If this was even a borderline "free" world he could go play chess where he fucking liked, and tell his politicos to shove it.
Instead you US morons try to put that guy into prison for moving black and white wooden figures across a small playing field, thereby harming absolutely nobody, and all that while your borderline criminal president is all but proven to have started a real war with thousands of real people getting really killed based on a stinking pile of lies and innuendo ?
Why the f*** don't you put the Texas moron into jail and leave harmlos players alone, instead ?
why then, if it was so great, did it fail so spectacularily ? why couldn't you code the line "sorry we are out of stock" ? why wouldn't you implement honest customer information ("we have a backlog of 12.000 and there's not a chance in hell you'll get Big Jim Ninja Turtle Robot before Christmas 2007"). ?
Warehousing issues... pfft. You probably thought of the customer as "the one who's going to be ripped off". Oh, and how they were! Once.
Everything I've seen appears to be quoting a May 5, 2004 story that appeared in the New York Times. [...] Unfortunately, articles more than 5 days old are not available to free subscribers
Try this one ! CNN money attributes it to a Varietey article.
Essentially, the question is who's more credible here, Moore's literary Agent or Eisner. As has been noted before, both are deeply involved and anything but objective observers.
Me ? I'd believe a literary agent over a Disney CEO any day...
First, it only said Bush had even won if Gore's requests in court (i.e. very limited recount in only four counties based on restricttive standards) had been granted. That might diminsh the actual influence of the Supreme Court decision, but does not refelect the actual voting result. The same article also mentions that a full recount by e.g. the Palm Beach standard had given Gore a small lead.
Second, the recount only dealt with ballots disqualified in the vote. It did specifically not address two other serious problems, namely the wrong certification of clearly illegal votes (mostly late overseas votes, plus in one case the Republicans were even allowed to come in and "fix" a number of already submitted votes) and second the purging of thousands of perfectly eligible mostly black voters from the voter list by Mrs Harris on the advice of some dubious "voter list clearing" firm.
From all I've read about this thing, Mr Bush had not won this vote in any major western democracy, only the US system is apparently corruptible enough to let something like this happen. What Florida actually demonstrated to the world in the US "The System" just barely works, and most checks and balances are woefully inadequate, a view that has since been sorrily amplified.
[...] does anyone [...] *really* think Bush and Hitler are comparable in any way that's remotely important?
Interestingly, yes, I think so. Now, before you go postal, no, I don't think think they are comparabnle on motives. Nor in their means, though Mr Bush's not-quite-torture-Regime gets a few wannabe points on that.
But if you look where they got their respective nations - they both converted a stable military advantage into a defeat by oeverstretching their respective armies in grandiose self-overestimation. In the end, it was his hybris that brought Hitler down, and if Bush goes down now, it will be due to his own - and his administration's - hybris as well.
Again, those situations are not equally comparable, but I nonetheless see some interesting parallels. No, Bush can't politically be compared to Hitler - but he might have learnt, a bit or two, from Hitlers mistakes.
It might also tell him some things about the view his people will have of him in the future. Subconciously people tend to forgive their leaders absolutely everything - except failure.
Do any other non-Americans find this as hilarious as I do ?
Ack.
Those guys should have spent some time with real leftwing radicals. I mean, come on guys, there are places on the world, wehere gun control is whole heartedly supported by the conservatives, and they and the socialists keep overall tax burden far above 50% with a straight face. Where unions as you know them are a state guaranteed right and hold 50%-1 vote on every company board.
Where the real lefties are so far removed from reality that you ask yourself what universe they come from. Hey, check out Germany's (really) beloved 'Secretary of State/Foreign affairs Secretary' Joschka Fischer, who started his political career personally knowing qiute a few of the 70's Terrorist luminaries, or our somehwat despised "Environment Minister", who not-so-long-ago used to be menmber of a real orthodox communist group ("orthodox" meaning "unconditionally loyal to Moscow" - we used to joke about those Spartakus guys in university that they would open their umbrella as soon as it started to rain in Moscow)
Oh, and go to France, Britain, Spain, Italy, Greece, you name it - you will find all shades of real socialists and communists there as well.
As for Europe, Mr. Kerry (like Clinton before him) is a moderate conservative, while Mr Bush would probably grouped with the likes of Haider, LePen and Fini as a borderline extreme right-wing populist (though his habit to name fundamentalist christian ayatollahs to top governement posts is a practice not seen anywhere in Europe these days).
Do you have any actual issues, or is that just a better.than-usual troll ? Why should x.org not work with NCDs ?
BTW - ever tried to get Suns or contemporary Linuxes work with NCD crap ? I think I've seen more pseudo frozen NCD terms than I can count. Those thingies are incredibly picky about what they work with and what not.
Gosh - a troll moderation. Some folks apparently can't stand critcism when its packed in a little irony.
Ok, just for you, that humour impaired moderator out there, straigt and without any attempt to be funny: Our Hero has equipped his victim with a piece of software (Zonealarm), that most serious security professionals consider a nuisance at best - and harmful in other cases. For a simple explanation check the small FAQ I gave (not mine, btw).
Furthermore, instead of giving him the mature Mozilla browser (1.6, or maybe 1.7RCx), he installed the beta "techology preview" Firefox 0.8. That is clearly something for people who know how to handle beta software (why, do you think, that's a zero-dot-something version number ?). And this one really has a glaring security hole - just check that link to securityfocus I also gave.
So, to sum it up, his services for the chiropractor where a mixed blessing, at best.
But our knee jerk moderator, at the slightest hint someone might criticize his hero, yelled "Troll". Mr. moderator, frankly, you wouldn't even tell a troll from a legitimate post if someone correctly labeled them with 12 inch sized neon-green blinking letters.
Your name is German, you live in The Netherlands, but you write almost as well as a native English speaker. What's the scoop?
My paternal grandfather was born in Chorostkow, currently in Ukraine, historically in Poland, at the time under Austro-Hungarian management. He came to the U.S. in 1914. I was born in New York and grew up in White Plains, NY. I went to Amsterdam as a postdoc and have sort hung around ever since.
I fully admit it. As a matter of fact I did it just to see if there would be any ROI from it.
Hmm.
But what had you done if it did work ? The main gripe people have with this is that it is unethical - like paying a company that overpaint's ad süace others have rented on the street and put your ads there.
Had you continued using that if it got you a good ROI ?
According to one of thousands of corollaries to Murphy's Law, a spelling correction on the net is guaranteed to contain at least one spelling mistake as well.
will never be extradited. Constitution luckily forbids it. FWIW, that article got a few exemptions recently for purposes of EU harmonisation. I don't know if they apply here, though,
But that fee is a good idea. Consider it a handling fee. You can only get into their database by behaving badly direrctly or indirectly. Be thankful that there is a way out of that database at all.
If a customer of yours is the offender, pass the cost to him. Simple and effective.
All that has to happen is that when notified, an ISP should investigate and terminate a spammer in a timely fashion. 14-45 days seems like a good time period. Anything beyond 45 days is truly tolerating abuse.
45 days ???
What about 45 seconds:
telnet spammersborderrouter.mybackbone.net
username *** password: *** ena password: *** interface serial 5/1/2.3
description * joe spammers T1 disconnected because he is scum *
shutdown ^Z wr exit
This is just egocentric crap! We are frequently blocked because our netblock is a source of spam.
Good. Apparently the system works.
The ultimate provider is controlled by a branch of the Chinese government. Like most people here, we have no choice, or influence over our ISP. The logic in the post is therefore fatally flawed.
It isnt. Since whoever has monopoly over there isnt technically or operationally competent to connect you to the internet, you have no internet connection. If the government is the problem, get another.
Be aware, that the fastest growing power in IT and related is China. Do you really want to exclude that potential source of business enquiry?

given the dubious record of the poilce to even understand such confessions I tend to hold judgement for now.
Maybe he only wrote a variant - according to the articles he also admitted doing a netsky variant.
As for punishment, if the charges proves to be reasonable, expect him to be tried in juvenile court.
ahem ... call me stupid - but isn't this exactly the other way round ? Internet Exporer claiming itself to be mozilla ?
