But I'm sure President Obama and his "windfall" tax on any company with a 10% profit will revitalize business!
Normally I'd be opposed to a windfall profit tax. After all it places additional doubt in the minds' of investors about whether or not they will reap the rewards of their investments. But in the case of the oil industry, I think it is justified. These guys have been given enormous tax breaks in the past. Now that they are doing well it is time for the citizens to get their money back.
I have been watching this modding down of posts that do not show Microsoft in a favorable light for some time, and I do think it is far to thorough to be just an accident or a few M$ fanbois.
Quit being paranoid. Any criticism of MS, Apple, or Linux is like begging for down moderation. Lots of the mods are babies who cry if anyone says something hurtful about their OS.
Here's a better idea. Anyone that lets internet text upset them should have "I AM A PUSSY" tattooed across their forehead to warn people that they are in the presence of a pussy.
It's bad enough that you have to hold your tongue at work. I remember one guy next to me had some anime wallpaper on his screen. No nudity or anything..just Japanese cartoon women. Some pussy complained and HR forced the guy to change his wallpaper. I don't blame HR, I blame the law. Right now the law is written so that the whiniest and most think-skinned get their way. And the 99% of other people have to live in fascism.
I constantly hear this quote from Mac fanboys but it doesn't make any sense. The implication is that other computer systems don't work. I'm on a machine that dual boots Windows and Linux, and guess what? It works!
And you know what else. Nearly every server in the world is on Linux or Windows and they work too. And most businesses are running Windows or Linux and it works there too. And finally Linux and other non-Apple OS's are running nearly all of the embedded systems in the world. And what's most interesting about this is how microscopically small the amount of these people who think Apple "just works" is.
A better sponsorship would be to quit developing IIS and focus all of its development staff on Apache for Windows,
NOOOOOO!!!!In general I dislike most of Microsoft's technologies. First they make MFC. Code usually looks like someone threw up on the monitor. Then they go and get the same guy that came up with MFC to write C#, which is also horrible. And to top it off, on top of the crap that is C# they pile on things like Forms, WPF, and 1000s of other things that are all hideous.
No company in history has made uglier looking API's. The nice thing about open source is that if you don't like some API, there is a good chance someone has written another one that you will like.
I disagree with you about package management. When I was new to Linux it gave me major headaches, but I like the fact that the package manager makes installing, uninstalling, and updating things easier.
You are right about browsing with flash being hard for novices and I'll also add in that watching dvd's is a PITA for novices as well. Despite what zealots say about how easy it is, I could never picture my mom, dad, or sister figuring out how to get youtube working or figuring out how to watch a DVD. Maybe as more OEM's ship Linux, they will pony up the fees for licenses that will remove these burdens on new users.
Compiz has wobbly windows- i.e. they wiggle a bit when you move a window around. Windows zoom in and out when you open and close them. You can also bend and stretch windows a bit. It's ok, but it's definitely not an incredibly useful feature. It just looks sort of cool.
I played around with some Macs and it's also kind of silly. When you start up some new gadget/widget/(or whatever they call it) there is a ripple effect when the thing starts up. Windows and stuff also zoom in and out when you open and close them. Pretty useless stuff, but hey I guess someone thinks it is cool enough to pay an extra 25% for the hardware.
There is also a bar on the bottom for quickly launching an application. And when you hover your mouse over a pic it swooshes out at you. I could imagine it being cool at first.
As for what Shuttleworth is talking about..I have no idea. I can't tell from the article whether he has any ideas or he is just begging the Open Source community to think up some new eye-candy ideas.
I'm wondering what percentage of Linux users are developers vs people that know nothing about programming. As a programmer I have absolutely no need for any more eye-candy. At most I'll have firefox, an interpreter/compiler, a shell, and a couple editor windows up.
For all the talk about how cool OSX is, I have NEVER heard of a hardcore embedded guy ever using Apple.
I'm less worried about the patent troll than the fact that the Patent Office allowed this crap to get through. I think it is time for some people to get fired.
What better way to intimidate a company that won't let you take them over than to team up with their inferior competitor?
Do they even really compete with each other? I always view AOL as an ISP, not as a content provider. I mean does AOL really make any income off their search results?
FPGA manufacturers usually have a clause in their compilers that states the output of the compiler can only be used to program their proprietary chips. The courts ruled that the license is enforceable.
Saying that you can only run OSX on Apple's hardware sounds like the same thing. So if the court respects precedence, then Apple will win.
Sometimes, if you take an idea to its extreme you can find out if it is just or not. What if Microsoft said that it was illegal to use their operating system except with a Microsoft keyboard and a microsoft mouse?
These are the types of crappy stories you find in the Life section of the newspaper. The New York Times especially likes these dumb articles. Gee I wonder why newspaper circulation is in the toilet all over the country.
Yeah, your number is probably more correct. Either way, it's a messy subject because of the inaccuracy of polling. The hitslink numbers (as the AC pointed out) could be artificially low because they base their polling on hits to 20 websites they have selected - a server sure as hell isn't going to be hitting those sites.
You do have some rights. Tell them they have the wrong number. If they still continue to call, then tell them that you are forbidding them to call you. By law, once you tell a bill collector not to call you about a debt, they are forbidden to call you again.
No need. It's in the kernel so it is available under the GPL.
Anything comparable on the horizon?
Well ext4 is in experimental mode. Looks like it is still slower than Reiser4 though. But it will be an improvement over ext3 since it at least has an online defragmentation tool.
What's going to happen to ReiserFS at this point?
I was looking forward to Reiser4 but who know what will happen now. Some people are hopeful that Hans will be working on Reiser4 from prison, but it kind of seems like a long-shot to me. It's a shame, because it looked like it was blowing everything out of the water (including ext4.) And there was still room for major speedups according to Hans.
A little context might help. This isn't the Inquirer for god's sake.
It's Intel's graphics chip for competing with nvidia. They are moving into this turf because nvidia is attempting to use their CUDA technology to make the CPU less important.
Let me add another example. Doctors have a powerful lobby in the AMA. They got rid of H1B style visas for doctors in a hurry.
With a union around, a company could never get away with having employees being forced to train foreigners in how to replace them.
But I'm sure President Obama and his "windfall" tax on any company with a 10% profit will revitalize business!

I was an embedded guy from back before there *were* FPGAs, and in those hazy days of yore, I used a Mac to write code for HC11s.
Congratulations on paying a good 25% premium on hardware to be able to program prehistoric devices.
I guess Windows wins again!
Not really. But only having enough software to play music, browse the web, and watch a DVD, like OSX does, relegates it to being a toy.

So kindly take your "I'm a PROGRAMMER so I am BETTER than you because my OS is DIFFUCULT" attitude and shove it.
Ok then kindly find me a copy of some FPGA place and route software, a copy of Synplicity, and Modelsim that work under OSX.

They're having a solar race... in Canada?
They just need to wait on the side of the road for another month before they get some sunshine again and can finish the race.
WTF is MS thinking these days...
Not sure, but if I owned any stock in them I'd dump it now. What next? Are they going to try and merge with hotbot and lycos?
What better way to intimidate a company that won't let you take them over than to team up with their inferior competitor?
Do they even really compete with each other? I always view AOL as an ISP, not as a content provider. I mean does AOL really make any income off their search results?
Is there any precedent here?

Well, looking at market share, even though Linux is still under 1%, it's almost doubled it's share in a year.
So even though the year of the Linux Desktop is a bit away, the time is coming closer.
Stop posting on the internet. That will take care of the first problem right away.
Here's a better one. How about you go drink a bottle of bleach. Then your whole family, neighborhood, and all of Slashdot can celebrate.
And while you're at it, take a bath too, Hindu
Everyone who is a part of a botnet should have their computer confiscated. They are too dumb to be allowed to have one.
We can easily wipe, the machine's hard drive and then install a new OS and you have a computer to give away to schools.
Two problems solved at once: one less idiot on the net and a free computer for a school.
Would Hans have to turn over the copyright?
No need. It's in the kernel so it is available under the GPL.
