Slightly off topic, but the midnight sun makes it damn hard to get any sleep without proper curtains. And who feeels like even trying to sleep when the sun is shining?
I live in Tromsø, in Troms, and a lot of students in the complex where I live cover their windows completely with tinfoil, and it's not because they worry about having their minds read.
I would hope slashdotters are skilled enough to find a more elegant solution than this.
I used to use rsync to keep my documents synchronized on several computers. Now I've started using subversion and a couple of homemade python scripts in my crontab to do the same job, and in a much safer manner. Subversion, combined with sunbird for calendaring and tuxcards for general notetaking pretty much eliminates any need to keep emailing myself any reminders, while providing a nice backup solution as well.
Having all these computers turned on will generate some heat. His ovens will probably have thermostats, so they will simply spend more time being idle. You have probably heard that energy doesn't disappear, it just takes on new shapes? Well, the heat output from a computer compared to the electricity input is no less than that of an oven. It doesn't really matter whether you spend 1000W using an oven or a bunch of computers.
But I just remembered that large parts of the world isn't quite as cold as Norway, where we have to keep it warmer indoor than outdoor most of the year, not to freeze our asses off. So you might still have a point.;)
Unless you are in an environment where close to nothing of the soundwaves get reflected from walls/ceiling etc, you'd have trouble getting this working. The speakers would never be able to cancel out all the different reflections, and would just cause more noise.:)

Ok, one might be led to think so from the massive amounts of predictable witty comments that you can see coming from miles ahead.
And slashdot is just one big, completely homogeneus group of people, where everybody has the exact same opinions. Duh.
I think the first time I saw in-game advertising must have been playing SuperFrog og my beloved Amiga. He ran around drinking Gatorade IIRC.
