    Ok, now this I gotta see. Here's yahoo's results:

    You might note that Yahoo has recently switched to using Google instead of Inktomi. If you had read the article, you would have noticed that. His friend might have done the search before they switched. That would also explain the mysterious "duplicate the same couple resources over and over again" that you noticed. Just a thought.

    You say you're keeping /. free of grammatical errors, then you go and commit one yourself. It's is a contraction of it is, whereas the word you are searching for is its, which is the possessive form of it.

    Also, when you use something up needlessly, you waste it, not waist it. Just a reality check here.

    1.) The NYU FAQ says that you have to use an Apple Powerbook. Don't you think that they'll get a backlash from, say, the Windoze and Linux users who don't want to buy a whole new computer?

    2.) Isn't it just a matter of time before someone breaks whatever sort of encryption thing they have on these and we get a DeCSS-like situation?

    3.) What if you don't want to have to stare at a screen to read the book, but (god forbid) you want something tangible that you can scribble in and mark up?

    We shall see what happens, won't we...

    That's the same kind of BS Micro$oft has been spewing about the ILOVEYOU virus. It doesn't matter at all if the antivirus software is up to date, although that is a great idea, it doesn't protect against any of the newest worms, virii or trojans. That's the problem with all the major companies, they feel like instead of taking the blame for stuff like this, they have to blame it on the user for "not having virus software up to date". What they need to do is find the security hole and patch it, not blame the clueless user.

    One day in the summer, I put up a bunch of flyers saying "Do you have old computer equipment? Give it to me!" and this one business gave me 5 286/15's and a 386/25. Another guy gave me a couple of 386/25 and 386/33's. I gutted them for motherboards, drives, RAM etc. What do you want? They're sitting in a closet in my basement.

    If Micros*ft registers microsoft.shop, do you think IE will start automatically completing words in the URL field to .shop domains as well, or not? Personally, I doubt it pretty seriously. What if there is the same name in the .shop and the .com domain? Which one will display? What about Netscape? What does anyone else think?

    OK, I'm sorry. I screwed up by saying it was a small sacrifice to have the FBI reading your e-mail to catch terrorists. Having read the other comments, I have changed my mind. "Not doing something to arouse suspision, so don't worry" is a bad saying, and I regret having used it. The arguments of my fellow Slashdotters have swayed me.

    I can see that everyone is worried about privacy and a "Big Brother" coming to get you, but if you aren't doing anything to arouse suspicion, you shouldn't worry. Why should I care if the FBI reads my e-mail to my friends, if all I am saying is "hi"? I care a lot more that the e-mail of terrorists is being read at my small sacrifice than I care that the FBI sees that my friend and I are talking about burritos or whatever. If you have no reason for the FBI to pay attention to you, they won't.

    Actually, The Codebreakers was recently revised (1996) and now includes much more up-to-date info. I'm in the middle of it now, and if you haven't read the update, you really should.

    I know that years ago, when Apple Computer entered the biz, Apple Records sued them for trademark infringment. The end result was that Apple had to promise, in writing, never to enter the recording business. Later, when Apple started including microphones w/ their Macs, someone was afraid of a lawsuit. Thus the alert sound 'So-su-mi' was created.

    Apparently this works by creating some kind of array of bumps on the screen so that one eye sees one image and the other eye sees a different image. My guess is that your head has to in just the right position or it won't work. You would probably have to program the game specially for 3D. If this isn't how it works, could someone please explain it to me, because this is the best I can come up with after reading their website?

    What I use for my desktop/laptop is a Powerbook G3. It has, according to Apple, an ATI RAGE LT Pro video controller for 2d/3d support. I like it as both a desktop and laptop machine, and wouldn't get anything else. If you're a Mac person, this is the thing to get.

    Did anyone see what the article said? Your LP's have to be spotlessly clean in order for them to sound good at all. You can reap the same benifit of a digital LP with a CD-R drive and some cheap software like Adaptec's Toast 4 Deluxe ($99.95). This product is really aimed at gullible audiophiles who have no computer experience.

    I recall just hearing about something like this in this month's issue of Popular Science. Seems Aiwa and another company are coming out with something like this on the summer. It's going to be around $300 and I think the Aiwa one is called CDC-MP3 or something. This is kind of vauge, as I heard it from a friend of mine.

    People are complaining that this violated the employees 5th Amendment rights. Not so. The 5th Amendment (and for that matter the whole Constitution) protects people from the government and has nothing to do with private companies. There are laws against this sort of thing, but the constitution has nothing to do whit it whatsoever.

    I agree. I don't think that cloning mammoth cells to implant in elephants (I think I read an article on this) would be such a great idea. Why did the mammoths die out? Because it got too hot. What makes you think that they won't overheat again if we bring them back to life? Excellent idea about the wildcats, though.
